It's kinda funny since the wii game play dvds (all you need is a quick software mod and dvd play back is suppose to work).

It's true, we DO have enough Blu-ray and DVD players. It's like people who threw a hissy fit when the latest Nintendo DS systems couldn't play Game Boy games. Like, who cares, just use you ACTUAL Game Boy, geez.

Anyway, I'm fine with this. Nintendo has always focused on one thing: games (since 1974, at least). Nice to know they're sticking to their guns.

I laughed at this. The return of "blowing into the Cartridges" will GLORIOUS!!!
Hey, that shit WORKED.

But seriously nintendo, dont you think that people might use their game console for other things than just gaming? It's a pretty big spend, even for a Wii. Microsoft are all over this for the X360, to the detriment of the thing being used for gaming anymore, so are Sony.

Would it be a hardware limitation, do you reckon?

You just know that all the people saying "That's the last straw, I'm not getting a WiiU anymore" are people who either weren't going to get anyway, or people who are going to get it regardless of their whining. The decision to omit DVD/BluRay support is going to have a minimal effect on its sales. Yeah, I'm sure there are people who actually will pass on it purely because it doesn't play DVD/BluRay, but definitely not enough to matter.

And yet this still means that we have to have multiple devices hooked up to our TVs, or will have to switch between them if we want to do different things.

Really Nintendo? It's not that hard (or expensive, I would think) to add the functionality that your console reads movie DVDs as well as your own. Am I just underestimating the work required here, or what?

I would like it very much if they changed their minds on this, at least for DVDs. Cable swapping is annoying.

Another way people aren't looking at this news is this. Some 360 games have had to come on multiple disks because of how much disk space they carry (L.A. Noire being an offender at 3 discs and not having 3 disks worth of gameplay in terms of length). PS3 Blu-Rays can hold 25 Gigs (50 if dual layered) worth of game. Nintendo really could just opt to use the disk space to make bigger and better games. Also it would be cool to throw on some headphones and watch a movie on the Wii U controller without having pay for Netflix.

On the plus side, this makes the system price lower, correct?

But on the downside, even the fucking PS2 could play DVDs.

cartridges are awesome, with modern technology they're so small you could loose them which is just a bonus for Nintendo.

fortunately for the consumer Nintendo have their own disc system, just to confuse the situation of what can actually be put in it

by the looks of the console it will be roughly equivalent to a cheap gaming laptop they did confirm that the hand-held part is just a controller with a display in it, and the base does the work
i cant honestly see how they'll get anything close to a ps3 in a box the size of a cd player, which presumably also houses a
'wii-d' player
( if they didn't call it that i will )
it's either magic, or not at all impressive inside.
or it has a supercomputer wired into it somewhere between the 'wii-d' player and the tv.

the slot is probably to charge the wiiu screen device or sync game data

Just another example of just how out of touch Nintendo actually is. Nintendo is a relic trying to survive past it's prime with the use of smoke and mirrors because they are no longer able to compete based on the quality of their overall product. The sooner they go the way of Sega the better off gaming as a whole will be.
LoL? Nintendo has probably the biggest pile of money (even if their stocks went down), then they have pushed loads of cool innovations through the door.

Wii,DS,3DS,SNES.
And the franchises oh god, the franchises.

So ***** please, they're not past their prime, trust me.
They just know how to make money =D
They aren't making money off of the 3DS' lackluster sales so that "innovation" didn't help Nintendo.

And really, putting your next gen console out 2 years before the competitions' expected releases seems stupid for the following reasons:

The Wii U has been said to be competing with current gen graphics even though it's supposed to be next gen..

The Wii U will not have the massive advantage that the original Wii had of being the cheapest console on the market. Sony and MS will definitively pull a price drop making the Wii U look really expensive to people in a crappy economy.

The Wii U also has not had the massive instant "Gotta Have It" factor the original Wii had when it got released.

These reasons are why investors are scared of putting money in Nintendo stock right now.

Why are people acting as if Nintendo knows how to print money because of the Wii's success?
Let's not forget that Nintendo's not being the front-runner on the technological front of gaming earned them getting slaughtered in sales next to the PlayStation two gens in a row, even having the newcoming Xbox beating sales of the GameCube.

The Wii isn't beating the PS3 and 360 in sales as well as others have beating Nintendo's previous consoles. So what makes you think the Wii U will beat the PS4 or the next Xbox?

Even though technology isn't everything in gaming, I assure you that the next gen Sony and MS consoles will have the edge of looking better, running better, and actually feeling new when they come out. Where as the Wii U really is what the Wii should have been in the first place.

It would have been nice to present the option: +$20 for a WiiU with DVD functionality, +$50 for Blueray ... or something like that. But even so, I'm certainly not bothered by this announcement at all.

As for some of the people who I only hope are trolls and not idiots:

So all of us with Netflix accounts that receive DVD's can now be expected to unplug our white urine box in favor of a DVD player?

The best part about this is that I never actually bothered getting a standalone DVD player because for the last 6 years or so I've had a console that played DVD's. ...Smooth Move. Skipped the Wii and now the WiiU will follow suit. I loved my Gamecube so much too.
You tell em! The gamecube was awesome with it's DVD playba- oh wait, no. Maybe the nintendo console before that one? Or one after it? Nope and nope.

Hey wait, Nintendo has *NEVER* released a console with DVD, BluRay, VHS or Betamax compatibility (unless you count the Japan-only Panasonic Q) To be surprised by this announcement means you obviously haven't been paying attention.

Nintendo, do you ever learn? The lack of DVD support is why I am the only person I know (In real life) who actualy has a wii.
So, you actually know people who own (for instance) a PS3, which has DVD and BluRay support. And those people still refuse to buy a Wii because it lacks said support? I'm guessing these same people will refuse to buy the WiiU for the same reason, despite it being completely redundant.

Personally, I'm protesting the WiiU's inability to make fruit smoothies, even though I own a blender that can accomplish that task already.

Im so glad I brought my PS3. Sold my Wii for its current shop selling price.

Some people like me dont want to buy a DVD player AND a console and want the console to do it, because it should have a DVD player inbuilt by default by now, doing this like the Wii is just a terrible, stupid idea.

How many years do you think is left of this console cycle?

MovieBob, in a Game Overthinker video, made a very obvious but poignant observation on this. Sony introduced DVD playback on consoles with the PS2 because they had good reason to as an electronics company: they wanted to promote the DVD as storage, back in the day when there were still some people using cassettes out there. Later, they would put BluRay on the PS3 to push the format they own and help their film and video division. Microsoft, as a company that mainly deals in computer technology, found benefit in being able to push its online capabilities and connectivity with Windows computers, again, because their games division is only one part of a much larger corporation. Nintendo's consoles are not all-in-one media centers. They are game consoles, and that's it. Nintendo is a game company. It's their primary focus, it's what they do. They have never cared which machine you use to watch movies, listen to music or chat with your online friends. They just want to be the company you turn to for GAMES. Microsoft and Sony are not primarily GAME companies. Sony is an electronics company and Microsoft is a software company. They could stop making game consoles today and their world would not end. I hear some investors have actually been asking Microsoft to sell off their game division. In the end, it comes down to philosophy. With Nintendo, games and gameplay come first. They have no other thing they feel they need to promote. When you think of Nintendo, you think of games, and for a good decade, the name was practically synonimous with gaming. To Nintendo, most other things are frivolous distractions that can get in the way of that. Sony and Microsoft are corporations for which gaming is just one of many concerns. They deal in other media every day, and want to be the company that "owns your living room". If there's something your PS3 or 360 can do aside from play games, it's because someone else in the corporation was already working on it, and the company decided to add the feature into the console. So where Sony, being the electronics company it is, sees a thing like BluRay playback as integral to their business, Nintendo just says, "Does it help you play games? No? We don't need it. Moving on."
I probably said way too much for such a simple idea, but oh well, had nothing better to do.

I don't know what to make of it. I'll admit I've always preached that I truly didn't want/needed all the stuff that my PS3 comes with: Blu-ray player, DVD player, music, pictures and video storage, web, browsing, etc. It was a hybrid computer and because of that, the PS3's price originally skyrocketed. I would have been more than happy if my PS3 had better graphics (Which it does by default) and just carry over the DVD player since the PS2 already had it. So I'm kinda glad Nintendo is thinking about this: Most Wii users are kids or families. As such, they don't care about online gaming (Let's face it; not all of them but the majority, at least). Like they said, the probably already have a DVD/Blu-ray player of some sort. Come on, who doesn't have one already? Kids just wanna pop in the game and play, same with families. So truly, I'm glad Nintendo is keeping this in mind

On the other hand, Nintendo's not alone in this race. The majority of gamers are used by now to all the new features the PS3 and 360 introduced. When compared to these two systems, Nintendo looks archaic and dull while the PS3 and 360 keep evolving and evolving. Not to mention Nintendo's only got a handful of titles that keep it afloat. Yes, I'm talking about your well known titles: Mario, Zelda, DK, Metroid and all those Smash Bros guys. Don't get me wrong; I love those characters. But let's face it, that's all Nintendo's got. And they all fall under a same category: E for Everyone. Though they're good titles, some could argue there's no variety. And they might be right.

I guess time will tell. Maybe those non-console savvy parents will actually go for the WiiU if it's cheaper and has more family oriented games, which it will. So let's just hope that said parents are willing to spend money on games because I know PS3 and 360 users will definitely keep spending money on those consoles due to DLC, memberships, wallpapers, and so on. So this is truly a competition between gimmick (Wii) vs. quantity (Ps3/360).

To me it suggests that they're already anticipating that the Wii U will not be many people's primary system, since it can't necessarily fulfill all potential needs.
Or MAYBE, JUST MAYBE, it's because they realize that all of the hardcore gamers they want to win back already own consoles and/or computers that play DVDs... not to mention the fact that anybody in the market for a gaming console probably already has SOMETHING that can play DVDs... sounds like you're just one of those haters who's gonna hate

Nintendo are cheaping out on an aspect of their next console? Who'd a thunk?
You're right. Clearly, they need to make a console that can do EVERYTHING, and then laucnh it at $600. That's a winning business strategy.
That depends, does that everything include clean the dishes, vacuum, clean the house, do the laundry, etc?

If so, $600 is a bargain :).

well thats rather dumb. I don't have an actual DVD player i have my xbox 360, and I don't have a separate blu-ray player i have a PS3, I don't like it by the way because every damn time a new disc comes out it seems I always have to fucking update it. I also like the idea of if i am taking my console somewhere like on a trip I dont' have to worry about bringing my whole damn entertainment center. If I get tired of playing games i can just pop a dvd in my console, how does nintendo not get this?
