Firstly, stop dismissing all types of online chat as being automatically unimportant because you're cynical and don't use it. That makes this argument impossible since that is the type of socialization both my and Wheaton's comments are primarily dealing with. You shouldn't be looking for dates in game. You should be allowed to make friends though. It seems odd that you automatically jumped to the conclusion that I was talking about hitting on people because that is part of what is so wrong with most gaming communities. That kind of crap happens all the time. It's making friends that never happens.

Not all dates are romantic, I just mentioned "hitting on" at the end. Anyway, there's plenty of places to be friends because I really hate background radio chatter that is not related to the game.

And if things actually get better, why would you want to be friends with people that in the past were probably the same people that were part of the problem?

Most gaming communities are founded around liking a game. They should accept all the non-shitheads that like the game. Instead they often are just fine with the shit-heads and exclude others because members of the community just let the shit-heads do as they please. I would rather get rid of the shit-heads. They're in the wrong. And you can't just use a different in-game chat, at least not without being excluded from most of the game's community.

Really? How about private ventrillo and teamspeak servers? Or skype? How about the fact that different Call of Duty servers have their own text chat that cannot be read by people on different servers?

Chat in a League of Legends match cannot be read by people outside it.

I seriously do not get your point, and if shit-heads do as they please and nobody is doing anything then it's time to leave.

Did I say not insulted? No, I said treated decently. Women are treated worse in most games. Yes, there is harassment against men as well which should also not occur, but women get worse shit in most games.

If you're using those outside methods of communication are you excluding yourself from part of the community? Pretty certain that's a yes. If you're ignoring the in-game chat to avoid abuse then your range of interaction is being limited by abusive people. That is bad. The solution is not just to deal with it, the solution is to get rid of the abusers.

I don't play cod. My comment about games I play was adding to the list, not me saying I play those games. Just thought I'd throw that out there.

Okay, now the information I am getting is different. Apparently people have to be douches to be pros or being pro makes them douches. Either way, now the issue is more about the competitive scene than with women.

Make a female division like actual sports? That way women can hate each other. I don't know, I don't even know if there are enough women playing Street Fighter in a professional level to start a whole new division, but if they are a minority then I don't see the problem being solved unless you kill/force those people out of competition.

Well, while I was making up the bullshit I try to pass as arguments in my mind I imagined those female-oriented gaming websites and forums. Heck, there's even a site for gay gamers. And even female clans.

When you mention games I am back to the in-game shit talk and harassment fest that simply I have chosen to ignore.

Simply it's different to have contact with a community - such as the Escapist, where you can contact with a lot of people and jump from forum section reading about others and discussing things - and just having contact with a "community" - the other 15 assholes that the matchmaking service grouped for your entertainment in the next 10 minutes.

Communities are girlfriends, in-game acquaintances are prostitutes. There's a good chance I won't have to see them again unless I want.

I like chatting with friends in games and having fun with them. Fun is the whole point with me.

If there is a clan, there is a small community. That interacts with other clans inside a larger community. Perhaps an amateur league, even. Whatever.

If there is a gaming community, perhaps the teamspeak server even has different rooms such as the lobby, separate channels for specific games, etc. It's a bigger community.

Forums. Huge Community.

Hardly a way of excluding yourself from the community. Specially if the text chat and voip (if it exists) are not being used for anything.

In BF2 there was a pretty good VoIP system. Each squad talked between them, not to the whole team. Sadly not many use it, because it hardly gave any room to abuse - you couldn't insult opponents and any abuse could be reported to server admins. Also, leaving the squad would cut the link.

No, I ignore the in-game chat because anything worth reading is never said/written in there.

My range of interaction is shooting people in the face. If the purpose of the game was talking, then it would make sense to include that in my list of "interactions".
