Somebody will probably try it, but considering most companies couldn't manage a fuck up as bad as ME3's ending even if they were actively trying, they won't 'catch on' to any greater extent than they already exist as DLC or special editions or whatever.
Try have a bit of perspective please:

Deus Ex: HR, KOTOR2, Fable series, HL2, Shenmue 2, MGS2, Fallout 3, Mirror's Edge, Gears of War series, Assassin's Creed, Elder Scrolls series are equally bad or worse than the ending of ME3. And a lot of these games are excellent for most of the rest of the game, like ME3. Devs and gamers just don't do endings well. I still have yet to see anyone on a forum post an alternative good ending for ME3!

I'd hate for extended cuts to come out. If I play an hours intensive game all the way through and the ending sucks or the story is full of plotholes that is that. But I don't want to have to play through it again 2 months later just to find a few changes in the plot to tighten it up.

No, they aren't. All crap endings are not created equal. Those endings are bad because they cop out at the last minute, they're anti-climactic, they make no sense thematically, the developer's haven't put any thought into them, they make no sense at all or they provide no real closure. ME3's ending is all of this at the same time, and more.

*looks at games shelf*

Assassin's Creed Director's Cut edition, Dragon Age: Origins Ultimate edition, FEAR Platinum collection... nah, I doubt it will catch on ;)

Those are obviously different because they're mostly bundles of the DLC/expansions (not so much the first AssCreed) but it wouldn't surprise me. I don't think we'll ever see it to the extent we see it with movies though, since games don't have the running time problems that make directors cut movies so heavily in the first place.

Getting it right the first time should be a priority. If extended cut catches on, it's just giving approval to half assing things that should have been correct the first time.

And the South Park movie was uncut. It was bigger and longer too. That's always good.

To this day, I still wonder what the "Director's Cut" was in Sonic Adventure DX: Director's Cut.

Hey, if you want to expand upon the already well-made content, rather than making a sequel or a reboot and just want to go all Second Encounter, instead, that's fine with me. Go for it.

wasnt there a game not long ago that offered the true ending for a paid dlc? i see that sort of crap happening more and more.
Glad someone finally brings that one out. As bad as some people think the Mass Effect ending was (and, lets be honest, most people complain was that it wasn't tailor-made for their personal Shepard, not that it was bad), and least the story is complete and the added scenes are free; that idea that the TRUE ending is locked behind a paid DLC is truly, truly awful.

The game in question is Azura's Wrath (the publisher is Capcom, who seems interested in shooting itself in every possible foot). Not long ago, Ubisoft tried to pull a similar one of with Prince of Persia... it didn't end well.

Hope not, we shouldn't have to pay for our endings (looking at you FFXIII-2) We don't want half-assed endings.
I agree they should finish the damn game and release it. Damn the release date! Give us proper content, it's like loading the disc with dlc content and than releasing it later to make more money.
You know, they did that with Street Fighter X Tekken on Xbox360, they had everything on disc and had you buy the content over Xbox live. PS3 version had everything and so will the Vita. Good thing I am getting the Vita version when it comes out.

I have no problem with DLC but it should be stuff not on the damn disk.
Saints Row: The Third does it too, some of it pretty poor... Different coloured vehicles. WOW!
