Will next gen consoles allow mods/skins?

One of the things that really separates the computer versions of games from the console is the ability to modify levels/create skins. With the availability of online content, do you think that this feature will become common to console systems in the next generation? Or is it likely that with what forays are already present that it will arrive on the current ones? (Or not be brought to consoles at all of course would be a third option.)

Unless their is a function which lets you make mods on the PC and then upload them to an online console mod database i'm not sure it would work, since it's bloody hard to use a level editor/mod maker on a console.

Just get a PC tbh.

That said, not in the scale you can do it on the PC but I suspect someday they will.

Well, there is a trend aiming at user-created content. And some of the stuff at E3 was based around user-created content. I think that creating maps is a major part of the current gaming generation, and I would be very sad if it were to be left out entirely from consoles.

I think there are a few ways to make like TF2 maps on a PC, burn them onto a cd, and upload them to an X-Box. Not sure about it, just something a friend told me.

Well considering around three or so generations ago they had a system (or at least planned it) where you could take a picture of your face and skin it onto a character, I don't see why not. Natal could probably do it.

And as for levels, there are plenty of games on consoles that have level editors. I believe Pariah has one, for example. Didn't Halo have one too?

Smash Bros did it. Granted it's a smaller scale than other games, but considering the other two consoles have HDD there should be no reason why not.

EDIT: Timesplitters. Why the hell did I forget that? I remember a time when I thought to myself 'every FPS after this should have this'. And they didn't. The fuck?

Mods are probably the only thing you won't see.

Get a pc! sorry, but you should.

I suspect Xbox will try/have tried to do this. But I don't see how it could work

That's what I as saying. There are level editors, but they are hard and fiddly to use without a mouse and keyboard interface. The controller is just not well designed for level design, at least in my experience.

yeah but thats one game but to allow mods of anykind for every game isn't really doable under the current systems

In my eyes, Timesplitters did it perfectly. You could create some intricate and fun levels with a simple controller. So I guess it's down to implementation than anything else.

Yeah, but what I mean is mods probably won't happen full stop. That's a PC kind of thing to mod games, consoles are in a completely different world. If you want to mod that badly, go to the PC and do it, where the mod community is expansive.

there's an easy solution, instead of buying a console just buy a PC.
My computer is for work, my consoles are for gaming. Besides, there is more variety with the consoles...

I've never played Tmesplitters so maybe they did it in an easy to use way, but the others games i've seen with editors, like Farcry: Instincts Predator and Halo 3, are really hard to use.

Consoles are never going to get true mod capability.

Look at Timesplitters, that game will be 10 years old soon and it still represents the most comprehensive map builder on any console game. Halo 3's forge system allows gametype modding to an extent but only allows you to place objects within a preset geometry.

Net Yaroze (The Black Playstation 1) allowed full on game development and was about as close to proper mods as you will ever get, but even that's 12 years since Sony killed it off.

Console developers aren't prepared to lose control of their creations in the same way PC developers have to.
Console Manufacturers aren't prepared to allow content on their systems they can't control either (or charge for for that matter).

Their is not more variety on Consoles, in fact the polar opposite applies. On any console you are tied into a couple of hundred decent titles, measure that against the tens of thousands of retail games, mods, freeware, flash games.
Even on the genre front there are things that simlpy fail to appear on consoles.

If you want mods and variety it's PC or bust, otherwise you're stuck with FPS, TPS, RPG, Racing, GTA clone, Platformers, Party and Sports games...

Um buy a second hard drive? (still cheaper then a console) and more variety my ass.
Hmmm, I do have an external hard drive. Maybe I can tuck them there... thanks.

And, I will modify my variety statement to there are a lot of games I like that are not available for the PC.

More games should have a built-in mapmaker and level editor.
The people who mentioned Timesplitters, well done. You can do quite a lot of stuff with the Mapmaker on that. The possibilities are *almost* endless.

One thing I never understood was why so few racing games had track editors. I've played at least three but they were ridiculously obscure and weren't fun at all... How hard are they to implement? And yes, I've played Trackmania, that was quite good actually.
So I hope Mapmakers and track editors and level builders become the norm what with the emphasis on user-created content attributed to Little Big Planet.

I think consoles should allow PC-style mods but the only way that could happen is if you installed the games to the console. Which would just make it a smaller PC.

I reckon next-gen we'll be downloading full-sized games Steam-style.

As far as I know, the PS3 allows for user created mods in UT3. But that's the only game I've heard of that supports it.
