Will Shenmue 3 keep up the level of voice acting we've come to expect from the series?

Is it still possible to put a game with this kind of quality in this day and age?

I just don't think there'd be any point to playing the game without all the stilted, awkward, and frankly bizarre dialogue.

I think the problem is that these day we expect more than we did in the dreamcast era. It has a lot more to live up to. If it had all the same mechanics as the previous games, it would look very inferior by comparison.

I think it was just the era. Anyone remember how bad the house of the dead voice acting was?

Sure, it's possible. Whether it's likely or not is another question, which I think depends on the budget more than anything else. If we get some shoestring Swery affair, then sure, it's gonna be weird. But if there's actually some money put into the voice actors on this thing, well...

Maybe but there seems to be a lot of interest in old games/remasters/retro style games these days. Gamers are nothing if not blinded by nostalgia and the nostalgia is strong with this one.

I'd play Shenmue 3 even with the stiff voice acting if only to finish the series finally. That was part of that game's charm, all the oddball characters you'd meet in your travels and the strange interactions with them. It was how it felt like it was a real world and that you were a part of it. You didn't play it for the story or voice acting but for the immersion and all the random stuff you could do.

Besides, the voice acting wasn't that bad, just not as animated as we are used to these days.

Well then there are going to be a lot of very ticked off Kickstarter backers.
A Kickstarter not fulfilling its promises to its donors? Yeah, you're right. That would never happen.

Were they not angry though?

Looks like Corey Marshall is reprising his role of Ryu for Shenmue 3, so it's looking good on the VA front already!

Someone must be feeling preeeetty embarrassed right about now. You knew that this day was coming too, which is why you haven't logged on in over a year. Didn't want to be around here when it actually came out.

OT: It's glorious though. The voice acting is everything I had hoped for. It's bad in a subtly different way. I've only seen 15 minutes of the game, but I've heard 3 different pronunciations of Ryo's name: Ryo, Lio, and Ro. Which is strange because in Shenmue 1 and 2 he was consistently called Dyo.

I feel dumb for not realising this is a necro'd thread. I'm here thinking, "its out, you can probably just check YouTube or something". In my defence, I'm putting it down to a dose of Man Flu and the fact 2017 was a long time ago.

I mean, the localizers for the Disgaea series seemed to understand that hamming things up with the voice acting enhanced the game and made sure characters like Laharl still sound like they did in the first game despite some people thinking his voice is annoying and bad.

I also feel like the Silent Hill series loses something when the characters emote too much so I can understand your concerns.
