Vista was never designed for netbooks, due to the reliance on dual core processor architecture (someone correct me if I'm wrong) this is why all the manufactured netbooks come with XP. Microsoft specifically said that Win7 would be the OS of choice for netbooks, even hinting to a specialised netbook distro of Win7...
I wasn't really clear, but the laptop isn't one of the netbooks, has a proper (if much slower than usual) dual-core CPU, not an atom. So Vista really shouldn't have been that slow...

Very impressed with win7 though, it's what vista should have been :)

I had an old gaming rig running XP from 2004 that actually outperformed my 2009 Vaio laptop with Vista in almost every game I tried, even though my laptop has superior hardware in every respect.
Yes, my laptop, on paper, beats the piss out of my wife's crappy old Dell in every respect. However, the Dell still runs everything, especially games, WAY better than my laptop does despite my system having an extra processor and a way "better" GPU. I reckon it's because laptop hardware has to be a lot smaller and energy efficient than it's desktop counterparts (the motherboard on the Dell is bigger than my lappy!) so therefore runs slower, despite the specs. Backup on this theory from Jebbo would be good though because at this point I'm just making it all up.

Does anyone have any concrete info on what Win7 will be like for games? We all (hopefully) know that Vista is pile of steaming mouldy cheese and Win7 will correct this for PC users. But what will be games be like? I know that on the most basic level of understanding Win7 is FAR better at utilising system memory.
This might help.

In terms of resource usage, Win7 is in the middle between XP and Vista.

i see, so they just have to do trial and error until they get software to work under Linux. I can see how that would be time consuming
Yes, but what you have to remember is that for most Linux afficionados, the challenge of getting something to work is usually a great deal more enjoyable, motivating, and rewarding than actually doing whatever it was you were trying to get to work. And that goes double for games.
