I DON'T EVEN UNDERSTAND ANYTHING ANYMORE

On the bright side, at least it was pepper spray and not a gun. Someone is dumb enough to do that, and you know it.

I just got done on an 8 hour shift for Black Friday at Target! 12 midnight to 8AM! It was hard as hell, but we kept things organized and kept a constant presence to deter crap like that. We even had the local law enforcement hang out up front to keep the people's heads in check. And surprisingly, everyone I helped was civil and well-mannered. Save for one or two rotten apples. We didn't have any pepper sprayings or shootings or tramplings, thank god.

Honestly they should just end the whole black Friday thing since I pretty sure the death of a shop worker from last year is not worth all of this.
This is the more interesting thing.

Retail based sociopathy are not based solely around Black Friday, that's just when they're reported more.

June 5th - Man unable to return receipt sets three rows of clothes on fire [http://www.heraldtribune.com/article/20090605/BREAKING/906059977/2055/NEWS]

January 22nd - Man applies special sauce to steaks [http://www.fox8.com/news/wjw-news-man-arrested-urinating-steaks,0,5343411.story]

December 3rd - Elderly man punched in the face for saying "Welcome to Walmart" [http://www.wpxi.com/news/21788662/detail.html]

http://www.cracked.com/article_19572_5-black-friday-myths-media-wants-you-to-believe.html

I'd also recommend reading Jennifer Government [http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jennifer_Government] because a few fatalities are always good for sales ratings.

Edit: Oh, from this year : Walmart worker beaten to death [http://losangeles.cbslocal.com/2011/11/01/victim-beaten-to-death-with-baseball-bat-at-lakewood-walmart/] November 1st.
My God... :(

I'll stick to Steam sales, I think.

Well hope that the ten bucks you saved on that video game is worth it when one of the people you pepper sprayed sues you.

Unfortunately, being the kind of person that just buys everything online for practically the same price as in stores (if not less), I miss out on such wonderful occurances. To make up for this, I'm just going to pepper-spray my mailman. Not as good, but it's the price we pay for convenience.

A woman desperate to take advantage of Wal-Mart's Black Friday game sales used pepper-spray to ward off her fellow shoppers.
How many people are going to have to die before its realized that these Black Friday sales are a bad idea?

I had to laugh at this. However, the flip side of the coin is that the title of this could have been;

"Woman Trampled to Death By Fellow Shoppers For Videogames"

And that's a hell of a lot worse than pepper spraying someone.

Black Friday hasn't truely caught on here in Canada but sadly it's creeping North.

The usual big shopping day (at least in Alberta) is boxing day when you have the really big sales. I usually just get the paper in the morning and have a look at whats for sale and go after lunch if it's something really good. Most of the idiots are done at that stage and I can walk without fear of being trampled or freezing to death as you stand outside waiting for the doors to open.

Wikipedia has the answer [http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Black_Friday_%28shopping%29].

In short, it's a day in the US where a lot of stores have sales. That's it.

""She was competitive shopping.""
Not English, but police chief, I think you meant competitiveLY. :\

Also, I give it a few hours before some lawyer calls up the store to stake a claim that sues them for letting a customer get sprayed with mace and not catching the perp (so they could sue them instead). Better hand out some free stuff, Walmart!!!

Thankfully, none of this Black Friday crap happens down here in New Zealand, or I might've been killed yesterday :p

Wow I never thought of how well it translates over abroad. But yeah Black Friday (pretty much an unofficial holiday) is considered the first day of the shopping season for the actual holidays. It's marked by stores opening super early, people camping outside stores, violence, and the occional death or hospitalization. It's always the friday following Thanksgiving (on thursday), which is when Americans unironically celebrate imagration, the opression of the native American population, and over-eating.
Isn't America awesome!

@Root_of_all_evil: Beat me to it. I was just about to post something like that. This is less about black Friday and more about the news hyping up a story that they would otherwise not give a solitary damn about.

*sign*, it's likely that everyone skipped your post though.
