If you're a guy theres a good possibity you know "the nod".

Its that slight gesture you do when you see someone you want to acknowledge. Just a slight nod of the head (upwards for more light acknowledgment, down for a more respctful nod).

Its come to my attention that i havnt see many women do this, i only have one friend who says she does this (shes very tomboyish) but ive never actually seen her do it in person.

Is this a thing for most men? Do women do it, or do they have their own way to show acknowledgment?

If anything this is just a topic about cultural and gender differences that i find amusing :p

Speaking as a guy, I definitely do it, as do most guys I know -- so there's that answer. As for the other question, I've never really thought about it, but I do see guys doing it more often than girls. Interesting little observation there.

All the girls I know always wave or smile, even at people they don't like so yeah, as far as I know it's quite a guy thing

I've never done "The nod" to a woman.

Girls get hugs.
Guys get "the nod" or a Brofist/hug depending on how close you are.

That's the way it should be.

:p

Most of the girls i know are into "hugging", somthing i am not a fan of.

I like "the nod", it is all that is needed.

Agreed.

Like others have said, neat little observation there. I'll be on the lookout to further prove this theory.

I give a little mock salute to everyone I meet, to my knowledge i'm the only one who does that. I started doing it sometime in high school and haven't been able to stop since.

It's a dude thing I guess, girls would rather actually talk to people. The nod is a way to acknowledge someone without actually saying anything to them, so it's a lot more comfortable to do with strangers. For the non-social butterflies among us.

I do it, especially the upwards nod thing. But I usually couple it with a wave just to make sure they see me see them =) (female here)

I do the nod, mainly with guys I'm not that familiar with.

Like that one guy you work with or go to school with, you know who he is and you talk sometimes, but not enough where you are friends - so you see him and do the whole awkward nod thing.

I also raise my brows while I do the nod. With girls, I just smile. :) :) :)

Did that for awhile. Still do it in some instances: Saying "later", greeting a superior I'm on good terms with, etc.

Not really a full salute anymore, though.

Your scare quotes are confusing. Is "hugging" referring to a nonstandard use? Because the quotes make it sound way sexual.

OT: In my experience, women are conditioned to be less emotionally reserved and therefore greet with more than a nod. I'll usually at least give a quick smile unless I'm in a hurry.

Hmmm...

I use the nod, but only in passing... even with guys I'm only acquainted with (i.e. not real mates).
With mates, much of the time, there is a mutual understanding that words are going to be exchanged. We approach, grip hands and engage in a manly handshake, and proceed to exchange words.

With girls, I do a weird wave and small smile, while mouthing 'hi'.
With girl friends, much of the time, there is a mutual understanding that words are going to be exchanged. We approach, gently hug and kiss each other on the cheeks, and proceed to exchange words.
