World of Warplanes Is Ready To Fly

World of Warplanes has confirmed a September launch date with a Gamescon trailer that's hellishly cool.

Being old may afflict me with a certain bias about videogames - I can remember a time when flight sims were the pinnacle of electronic entertainment and joysticks were de rigueur - but even though it's all cinematics and I know this kind of thing doesn't really fly with the kids anymore, the new World of Warplanes trailer really makes me smile.

After two months of open beta that saw nearly three million people take part in more than 202 million combat flights, World of Warplanes is finally ready to fly, and since Gamescom is spooling up at this very moment it's obviously time for a new trailer. And I do like what I see: Runstangs and Spits, Messers and Buffs, and just enough crazy stunt flying to remind you that this is in fact a videogame.

Alas, you won't likely be taking any of the machines in this video into the unfriendly skies anytime soon. Assuming World of Warplanes works like World of Tanks, you'll start off in the clunkiest of machines, probably a Yak from the early 30s or maybe an F3F if you're lucky, and then have to work your way up to the "real" warbirds. Not that they won't be fun to fly when everyone's on more or less equal footing, but the good times tend to stop rolling in a hurry when some jerk comes to the party in an F86.

The free-to-play World of Warplanes launches in North America and Europe on September 26, one day after its "real" debut in CIS countries. To find out more about the game, hit up worldofwarplanes.com [http://worldofwarplanes.com/].

Now if only the game didn't control like utter shit. I played the beta for about a week and had to give up because the controls were almost unplayable without a Joystick. I've had much better luck in War Thunder, and I can queue up more than one plane per match in that game.

Just to clarify that trailer is nothing like the game.
And the game does indeed handle like ass even after all the complaints that shit has not been fixed, so for now just play War Thunder until these guys get their shit together.

Too bad there actually aren't tunnels with trains in them. I'd love to pull an Indiana Jones, or Mission Impossible. Making people crash in the worst spots is what fighter combat sims are all about. Guessing you can't crash into trains, either then :(

Ah, War Thunder - now there's a game that became way more popular than anybody expected it to be because it was exceptionally well designed.

Pre-rendered trailers are not good indicators of how good a game is.

But, I will admit, it does look cool.

I don't know what War Thunder is so I can't jump on that band-wagon like everyone else so I'll just leave my comment at that.

I actually prefer WoWP over War Thunder after extended play of both. I never liked the garage battles and the maps are better and I prefer the controls in WoWP. The matchmaking could use a revamp and I want Brit planes to come out already but it's more fun in my opinion.

WT features smoother controls, quicker response times, and dogfights that feel... like dogfights. Planes in WoWP have a *lot* of health, so "dogfights" tend to take 3-4 fly-bys and feel very slow and sluggish. Also the reliance on maps made specifically for a game about tanks is also confusing - there are hardly any maps that planes can *really* use for strategic cover or ambushes. Compared to the amazing amount of long, deep valleys in some of the WT maps, WoWP felt very, very flat.

If you prefer the sluggish response time of pilots drunk on vodka, then have fun in WoWP. If you like planes to almost feel like planes, definitely stick to WT.

(That said, I still think WoT is a great product; if WoWP was as good as its tank variant I'd be behind it all the way, but it... isn't, really).

good. can we now stop talking about war thunder as if its a good game just because its the only one thats pulling this stunt now?

Me? ill wait for world of battleships. planes never interested me.

Just ignore them. like use the ignore function. they get bored REAL fast. and its really more or less one tier, from then on it is more like "retarded teammate whose tank is meant to go frontal assualt sits in corner being afraid" type of deal. but beside that its ok.

The thing with War Thunder is that its actually a very good game, even the previus Birds of Steel and Wings of Prey were awesome.

As a flight simulator - yes.
As a game - not really.
And the main problem is balance. there isnt any in War Thunder. Sure, they went for historicity > balance. but that means this game really will only be one where you go in as a flight simulator except your not alone rather than a competetive play. and if LOL outdoing WOW showed us anything, is that competetive play is the dirving force for players nowdays.

So, just because WoWP will be more balanced for competition it will have more player, therefore its a better game? Is that what you are trying to say? Your post seemed a bit confusing.

Either way, it being a good flight simulator is enough for people that like flight simulators and a flight simulator is a game so... yeah. Its a good game.

In trying to say that there is more to a game than historic flight simulator. if it wants to survive that is. yes, balance does make game better.

Admitedly I haven't played this game since the Alpha, and I can only asume it has come a very long way since then, but considering just how terrible it was (not as in buggy, just painfully boring...) at that time I never felt like going back to it to check out any of the updates. If the controllers are as bad as people say they are I don't see any reason to return anyway, especially considering we have the IL-2 game, ARMA 3 is coming (I always loved flying in ARMA 2 because it's fun and relatively simple) not to mention Star Citizen, the ultimate space-sim. I'll have no trouble getting my flying fill without WoW (ugh, another WoW?! Lets call it WoWp, seems like thats what other people do anyway), but I also wouldn't call myself a big airplane fan =3.
