I've never heard of Hikaru no Go. I'm not a super avid anime fan, but if it's the number 1 anime in the entire world I would've expected I have. :/

Edit: Never mind, I brain sharted.

It's no surprise, these polls are always full of it and are wrong in every way. An easy way to see this is just by checking the dates of release, as they are usually dominated, if not exclusively, shows and movies which have come out within the past 5 years. I remember last year Attack on Titan was high up on these lists, and the year before Sword Art Online was as well. It's pure hype, no substance.

Nah, those are his personal favorites. The actual number one spot looks to be rabidly changing between Death Note, Dragonball Z, Cowboy Bebop, and Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood. The lack of One Piece even in the top ten concerns me.

Note for others. You need a social media account to participate. So if you ain't got one, no participation!

So we're doing top 10s? Okay then:

I don't know if K-ON and Lucky Star would be in my top 10, as I usually include movies there, too, but they'd be in my top 15 at least.

Honestly, 6 - 10 tends to switch around depending on my mood. My top 5 is always definitive, though.

As for movies:

Anyway, I'm also super surprised One Piece isn't in the top ten as well, considering how long it's gone on for.

First of all, this website is terrible. Its selection of titles, at least as far as anime goes, is barebones at best. Where's half the anime that's aired that wasn't entry level? DanMachi is airing this season and is on there but shows from last season like Cinderella Girls are missing. And why the fuck is it that some of the best anime out there are nowhere to be found on their list but hardcore hentai like Bible Black and Taimanin Asagi are? Oh well, as far as titles I enjoyed go that are actually represented on this site, here we go.

Pardon my laziness, plus a top 10 is too much for me at the moment.

Top 5 Anime Whatever.

5) Princess Mononoke - A top notch film with good dialogue and some epic moments here and there.

4) Full Metal Alchemist (original) - Still has the best opening I've seen, and while it is a fair bit of filler episodes, it also has excellent execution in almost everything, almost. Plus it's the only anime where I found the ending actually satisfying.

3) Naruto (not Shippuden)- Oh yeah! I never ignored the flaws in this, but some of those battles are amazing fun. It also has great music, some funny and charming moments, and so many great creative idea's for special powers. More than anything else I've ever seen surprisingly.

2) Berserk (original) - I wish this one continued on longer. A great dark story with no stupidly done fantasy moments. Really wish this went on longer.

1) Hunter X Hunter (original) - Just an awesome mesh of charm that's not childish, shonen fights that don't drag out and actually feel fast, awesome music, and the Spiders arc is the most epic thing I've seen in anime so far.

Does anyone have any advice for me?

I prefer the more adult anime. No not the porn stuff ;)
I liked Knights of Sidonia and Deadman Wonderland.
Yes I know they aren't perfect, but their more adult and mysterious nature made me like them.

You can add a missing title in seconds if you click on the "+" sign next to the seach bar.
All the titles you see are the ones that people wanted to actually rank.

That's it for that list. There's just not many anime series I'm that much of a fan of really, unless we're diving into the World Masterpiece Theater shows, in which case...

5) Peter Pan no Bouken
6) The Wizard of Oz
7) Anne of Green Gables

Movies:
1) My Neighbor Totoro
2) Ninja Scroll
3) Spirited Away
4) Laputa: Castle in the Sky
5) End of Evangelion
6) Kiki's Delivery Service
7) Tokyo Godfathers
8) Memories

Try out the following:
-Fate/Zero
-Denpateki na Kanojo
-Danganronpa
-Bubblegum Crisis Tokyo 2040
-Evangelion (TV or Rebuild)
-Accel World
-Grisaia no Meikyuu (And then follow it up with Grisaia no Rakuen. You may choose to watch Grisaia no Kajitsu before these, but it's probably not quite what you're looking for and you can skip to Meikyuu without missing much.)

Looked over the top 100 list linked in the OP. Haruhi is really far down, Akame ga Kill is really far down and I couldn't find Girls und Panzer anywhere. Sorry, its provably objectively wrong. ;P

On a more serious note maybe this'll give me some more ideas for anime to add to my "to watch" list. Although I'm kinda disappointed that Cowboy Bebop is in top place. Its a decent anime but I find it suffers from "Final Fantasy VII syndrome" in that it is gigantically overhyped for what it is.

I don't care about rankings, so I won't be signing up. But I'll put my personal list down.

SHOW:
1. Berserk
2. Sad Robot Show (EVA)
3. Serial Experiments Lain
4. Toradora!
5. ...Madoka?
6. Uh... Cowboy Bebop, I guess?

This list is harder then I expected. Maybe I'm not as much of a fan as I thought. I liked From the New World, but I haven't finished it yet, so no vote.

FILM:
1. Spirited Away
2. Princess Mononoke
3. Super Sad Robot Movie (EoE)
4. Perfect Blue
5. Tokyo Godfathers
6. Angels Egg
7. Akira
8. Howl's moving Castle
9. Kiki
10. 5 Centimeters per Second

thanks vanq. I will give it a go.
I'll second Neon Genesis Evangelion, but you should really see the show before you see the rebuilds. The rebuilds are to Eva what Phantom Menace is to Star Wars. After you see the show, don't rage, it's not over yet. See End of Evangelion to experience the finale in its full glory. They ran out of budget, so the last two episodes are good, but they are not an "end."

My personal favorite, as you can see above, is Berserk. It's a dark fantasy series about a mercenary band. It's not all action and fighting, though. It's deeply philosophical and intricate. I'm confident I could write a disertation on it, if I were so inclined. See the brilliant show. Then go read the even better Manga.

Hmmm, the ratings looks pretty high. *adds to watchlist*
