Would you stop your children playing violent video games?

So...basically everything in Australia can kill you(toads, crocs, Australians), but violent games are a bad influence?

I don't get it.
It's not like watching the wildlife kill people is a national sport. And Australians don't kill people; you're thinking of Americans. That argument is virtually trolling.
And that off-handed "Americans kill people" comment would also be consider trolling. I agree with everything you said up intill you pulled that dick move out of your at. No need to rude. Were all good(ish) people here. Even us insane Americans.

Since i play games a lot i can judge how violent a game is beyond the age rating, something i suggest anyone else here should do.

I'd let my kids play more violent games as they get older. I wouldn't mind them playing games like Assassins Creed at about 12 years old, but they'd have to be at least 16 before i let them on something like God of War.
I'd probably stop them from playing things like CoD too, just because i hate the whiny, overly competitive, violence obsessed kids you find on those games. Valve can be his supply of FPS games ^_^

I don't have children yet myself, but a friend of mine has a 16 year old boy and last weekend he noticed that his son had bought himself Aliens v Predator for his 360.

My friend isn't particularly into gaming but had heard of this game because of the controversy over it a few months ago. (we live in Australia and it was initially banned here last year)

Because of this my friend has taken the game and the 360 off his son and is very unhappy about him playing it. He has pretty much banned his son from playing games again whilst he still lives at home.

This made me think about what I would do if I found out my child had been playing 18 rated games.......

What would you do?
ok first off your friend is an idiot im sorry but at 16 your more then old enoth to play AVP i dont know why its an M rated game anyways.
OT: now in the case of my kids i would take the same stance my parents did id watch them play the game and see what its about. Then if there was a gameplay point i didnt like say in GTA how you kill cops i would sit them down and talk with them if they can give me the impression that they know its a game and they should never do it in real life id let it go.

I started watching Family Guy and South Park and played T-M games when I was in second grade (it was actually the summer before second) and i turned out fine (ish) so I don't see why my kids cant do the same (I would also make sure my kids had twenty truckloads of common sense not to mention know what Pie is (the math thing) before kindergarden) but I don't plan on having kids.

I would control the games my (hypothetical) child would play.

I remember being in gamestop a few weeks ago when a kid who was 7 at most started griping at his mom about which versions of GTA he did and didn't have. It really bugged me.
.
I hate this. I would probably let my 5 year old play Halo and things like that but no five year old should know how to get a hooker , kill her, steal a car, out run the cops and steel a helicopter to get to the safe house.

It depends on a few factors, the main one being their maturity. If my kids have demonstrated a capacity for/tendency towards rational thought and mature decisions, I would have absolutely no problem with them doing just about anything they want to do (not just with games, I would allow drugs, sex, etc). I would make sure they know any and all consequences of their actions are entirely on their head, and probably try to discourage them, but I would not simply disallow it.

I don't actually have kids though, so this is all conjecture. I can't honestly say I'd live up to that ideal.

I played pretty violent games at a really young age (10ish) like parasite eve, siphon filter and metal gear solid on the ps1, and at that age I could tell killing in games was different then killing in real life. (though i'll never let a 10 year old play parasite eve, scarred me for life, but loved the game)

but really at the age of 16,(which is considered a highscool student in canada's education system) the kid probally has seen worse things on tv, in movies, or worst of all, the internet.

depends on the game and the kid, i would not let a kid play GTA with out playing it with him at least, and i would NEVER let a kid play some games, manhunt comes to mind. by kid i mean anyone under the age of 15 after that the choice on most things is theirs, the exception is truly pornographic or violent content, an R rated movie at 15 won't be an issue, Playboy etc. and 4chan are the limits.

This.

I wouldn't let my 6 year old son play gears of war 3. There is a reason for the age limit. however, as long as my kid wasn't going around putting cats in microwaves and stuff like that, at 16 he could play whatever game he wanted. Even one of those porno games. Even though I don't know why, as the interent would be better use for that.

If he was 6, I'd probably make an issue out of it; but if he's 16 I'm not going to make an issue. Of course Aliens vs Predator is rated M (17+) by the ESRB, so I'm not going to make an issue over 1 year.

When I babysit children for family, my plan is based on maturity. If the child can prove that they are mature enough to to play the game then I let them play the game... I enforce the MA15+ (and hopefully if it comes in R18+) limit because they are the law.
It was how I was brought up, until I was 15 I din't watch or play anything rated M or above, and whilst I lower the restriction to MA15+ and above, any game that I feel is too excessive it goes on a brown list, (Can only be played with supervision)
