As I was sitting here, merrily browsing the night away at the Escapist, I was suddenly startled: two vehicles came to a stop in front of my house, one of them a police car with the blues flashing.

At first I didn't know what to think. My first reaction was "OH NOES they've finally uncovered what I've been doing all this time... er, which is nothing. Nothing illegal. Really. Heh." But then it became clear that the other vehicle had just happened to be pulled over right in front of my house entirely by chance.

But then I got to thinking about startlement and disorientation. So I invite you Escapeople to share your tales of situations where you just had no idea what was going on.

Getting drunk and stoned in a field and the cops arrive, never a good thing.

One time, when on a way to the tampa bay airport, there was a HUGE traffic block up. When we saw what caused this, it was completely incinerated car. Wheels, missing. Seat, filled with holes, utterly scorched. Man, Burnt clothes, calling someone.
I was so amazed and confused at the same time.

9/11, I'm not kidding! Do you know how young I was when that happened!?

But on a little more serious note. When my mom was going into labor with my sister it was the middle of the night and I was ohhhhhh 2! Then an ambulance shows up and I was really confused. But hey I was 2!

Once I was sleeping and then I woke up and I was like, "What?" and then I remembered what.

Sorry, that's all I got.

That happened to me a couple of months ago. At 3am, I could hear the sirens and thought, "Hell, that sounds close". Then I saw the blue lights shining through the house. "ALIENS!" I thought but no unfortunately. I saw two guys getting arrested which later I found out were dealing drugs.

I did have a time where I didn't know if it was night or day. I was so scared. I had been on a ski trip for a week. 19 hour bus trip down and back, 6 o'clock start every morning. I didn't feel overly well when I got home. I went to sleep at about 4 in the afternoon and woke up at around 6. I didn't know if it was 6 in the afternoon or 6 in the morning.

But then I got to thinking about startlement and disorientation. So I invite you Escapeople to share your tales of situations where you just had no idea what was going on.

The police found an abandoned car about a hundred metres from my house, then my family found out a couple of days later that the cops found a woman's dead body in it. never heard anything about it in the news.

Got a public intox in my own yard. Police swarmed out of nowhere, no cars they parked on the street behind and came through the backyard of my neighbors house.

She called the cops cause she thought we where trying to break into the house (nice lady, bit on the paranoid side). Told the cops people had broken into the house. They arrived saw me and two of my friends in the next yard over (my yard) and through we where fleeing the house. I guess they decided to give me the public intox citation since they had to come all the way for nothing.

I've gotten pulled over for walking across the street before.

I was in the middle lane, the one that people use when they need to stop and wait for traffic going in the other direction to pass, waiting for traffic to ease up so I could get to the bus stop, when this police car pulls up behind me, lights flashing and everything, and has me get on the sidewalk. For some reason, this guy thought I was drunk or something, and tried to fid a reason to give me a ticket. I was worried, because I had to catch the bus, and I didn't know if I would make it because of this, but otherwise I was just kind of bored. The best part was when when another police car stopped, because they always come in twos, and the new officer asked what was going on. The first officer told him what he did, basically pull over a guy because he was crossing the street, and the new officer was just kind of looking at him like he couldn't belive what he was hearing, but he couldn't say anything in front of me. I had to stop myself from laughing at the absurdity od it all.

Alright, I was in the Plaza del Sol in Madrid (which is just a teensy bit out of my element, you understand), when all of a sudden a white van stopped and two men got out (one from the passenger seat, one from the back), and one of them took the driver out of the van while another held him at gunpoint. About half a minute later, a cop car comes along, and a couple cops get out, handcuff the guy being held, exchange a few words with the other two guys, and leave.

It turns out it was a sting of some sort (I still don't have the full story), and the two guys who held up the driver were plainclothes police officers, but damn it was confusing at the time.

I've seen the police all over my estate a few times back home, there's this big open space (we just call it 'The Field') and there's plenty of bushes and hiding places there, plus our estate, though pretty decent, is right next to one of the roughest areas in the whole of the Black Country, an area known as the Lost City (anyone from the West Midlands will probably be recoiling in horror now, since you're likely to know the significance of this). Anyway, there's all sorts there, drug dealers and so on, people stealing cars and motorbikes and then joyriding all over our estate up the main road (which is very bendy, which coupled with high speeds, isn't a good thing. I'm amazed there's been no accidents so far). Plus gypsys often tie up their horses there while staying on land either near there or in another part of the Tipton area. But yeah, I've seen plenty of police around on a few occasions, though normally it's pretty uiet.

Oooh, funny story too. When I went to Florida last year on holiday, I think an airport securtiy guard at Orlando International stole my watch. Yeah, I went through the metal detector and it beeped. I'd forgotten to take my watch off. So I did that and went through again. Beeped again, I'd forgotten about the spare change in my pocket and my necklace (a piece of cord with a little metal dolphin charm). So I took those off, got warned that if it beeped again I'd be searched. I was actually really worried that I'd get searched and treated like a blooming terror suspect (ironically one of the films on the plane to Orlando was Rendition :D). It was fine though, but when I got my things back after I realised my watch was missing. There's probably a security guard in that airport right now laughing and showing off his new fancy £5 cheapo market watch that he stole from me... x)

I was walking a long one of the bridges linking Buda and Pest in the capital of Hungary, when I saw, along one of the streets in Pest, a blockade of wailing police cars, screaming crowds, and smoke. It looked like all-out chaos, and I had no idea what was going on.

It turns out to be that a Gay Pride parade ran into a Neo-Nazi rally, because the police had scheduled both events simultaneously.

On the same day.

On the same street.

Hungary sucks.

I sat on my phone, and I have an Env2 (http://www.phonescoop.com/phones/phone.php?p=1558) and when I sit on it, the lock will break every once in a while and I'll do stuff. So one time I call 9/11 on accident, and I'm driving with a few buds. So we notice a unmarked car trailing us. So I take out my phone, check my recent calls (I've done it before, but noticed it faster) 24 fucking minutes I had been on the phone with 9/11 and I didn't even notice. Needless to say, the police officer was not happy.

I suppose the many times I've woken up to people screaming at each other.
That's always hilariously good fun.

Back oh-so-many-years ago when I worked at Toys R'Us in the video game section, the director of the entire Chicagoland area took me back to his office, with some woman who also worked high up in the area. They proceeded to grill me for about 2 hours, trying to get me to confess that I had stolen $200 from a customer's purse. They claimed they had video evidence of it, and when I went to the bathroom, the guy followed me and tried to get me to confess whilst I was trying to pee.

Of course, I didn't confess, because I didn't do a damn thing. I've never stolen anything in my life. The next day I talked to my manager, who revealed that the video evidence was completely inconclusive, so basically they lied to me.

But for that period, I was just freaked out that I was going to be possibly arrested for something I didn't do.
