Whatever, just wash your hands.
Ive been messing around in saints row 2 lately and the game seems to play around 20 fps or so but can get really low in certain situations like the boat escape at the start of the game and thinking back to other 360 games Ive played it seems like low frame rates are rather common on the system, I cant off hand think of anything that really ran at a stable 30 fps or better.... maybe halo 3 but nothing else really comes to mind. Im trying to figure out if my system sucks or if this is a common problem for the 360.

Yeah, Saint's Row 2 (especially the beginning mission when you're escapist on the boat) has an ungodly amount of slow down. I always hated that part, felt like my game was about to crash.

the annoying thing is that I dont tend to see anything about this in reviews of stuff so Im assuming that the ps3 has fps problems with some games also but Im mostly a pc gamer so Im used to having a nice steady frame rate

Don't own an xbox, but I've seen the PS3 struggle a little bit on just cutscenes. I noticed this when playing MGS4, the framerate dropped to about 17-20fps. My tv has motionflow technology, but even that couldn't save the framerate.

Saints Row 2, as good as it is, had a lot of technical problems. The only game during which I've had more freeze-ups and errors was Fallout 3, and I think they have those problems for a fairly good reason: they're huge. There's a ton of content there, and the gameworlds are gigantic, especially from the programming side.

That said, I haven't really had any serious framerate problems with other games on the 360. I've noticed that games that have come out in the past year or so have more tearing than older games, especially in cutscene videos. My guess is that we're finally starting to see games that are actually pushing the hardware about as far as it can go, and performance is of course the price you pay for that.

I'd suggest checking out an older game if you have one, and seeing if you're having the same problems. If not, then I wouldn't worry too much about it. But if you are (and maybe even if you aren't), it could be a sign that your box is about to RRoD.

PS3 version seems to run fine, given the amount of bugs in the game. Can't say for the 360 version.

Frame rate slow down occurs when the processor in a system cannot keep up with the action presented onscreen and has to slow down to accomodate. On the PC, if you have the top of the line, most expensive (or extremely expensive) computer, then you don't have to worry about slow down. However, when a game tries to push the system (games such as Fallout 3 or MGS4) or is riddled with technical issues (Darksiders), it is common that the frame rate will suffer.

I was able to ignore it, besides you don't have to do anything on the boat, it has a ridiculous amount of health, even in hard mode. Apart from Saints Row 2, Mass Effect was the only other 360 I had slow down at certain points.

It's the game

Saint's Row 2 has disgraceful production values, try out the burning buggy mission for some utter chaos...

Games that have been well made and had the time put into them have stable framerates on the 360.

MW2, Mass Effect 2, Halo ODST, F.E.A.R. 2, Red Faction: Geurrilla, Bioshock 2, Dragon Age, Assasin's Creed 2, Dead Space all have stable frame rates despite being graphically demanding.

It didn't bother me, but I did notice it. It didn't get terribly unplayable though. It happens with a lot of games, usually the cause is that they're pushed out early and the devs don't have enough time to optimize and polish the game to make it more smooth.

At least thats what I think is the reason.

Once you play Crysis, and Oblivion without using any optimization mods, you tend to get used to frame rate drops.

I don't know, mine works just fine. I guess my fallout 3 freezes up, but I think that's more a game thing then a FPS thing

Don't worry, I used to think it was a problem with my 360 too until I read up about it.

Most shooters run at 30FPS.

As much as people ***** about MW2, it was a real technical acheivement.

It runs at 60FPS and only drops by a few frames once or twice through the entire campaign, on particularly large setpieces (like the first mission by the big bridge building thingy) and pretty much never does on the multiplayer except when people use smoke grenades.

For some seriously broken framerates, boot up Fallout 3 and go to the Pitt Steelyard or Adams Air Force Base.
