He-he. My 3 year old xbox is still running strong.
all my consoles run strong I'm sure how you treat them has a hand in it and a tad of luck and there you get a lasting console

also the wii may have the lowest failure rate but thats for the consoles my controllers tend to die on me a lot >.> except for one that I got when I purchesed the console (not the one that came with the console)

The 360 is fine (most of the time) against a red ring as long as the person who owns the console has common sense.
The main cause for red ring is abruptly disconnecting the power supply from the xbox before it is turned off
OR
Moving the Xbox WHILE IT IS STILL RUNNING.

Yes, the Xbox would fail a lot by itself anyway but it would probably be only half as bad...
If people were smart enough to figure out you have to switch off a console before you do some crazy stuff.

So yeah, Xboxs' die a lot.
And as long as you look after one you can most likely avoid the Red Ring.
If you are smart enough and got it by not your own fault,
Then you'll probably be smart enough to make sure you don't have to fork out a penny for the inconvenience.
See? People making excuses for the huge screw up's Microsoft made. Blame the user! Not the hardware designer. Just admit that the 360 is a screwed up piece of hardware. It is the truth.
Let him go with it it just exposes how retarded people are for re-buying the system over and over and over then doing the same mistakes.

Besides who (in their right mind) would make the system so touchy?

That's awful, and I feel your pain but I gave the hell up after the 2nd time and bought a Wii, with the extra money I jacked up my PC and put $30 into my gas tank.

I will only buy the next Microsoft whatever the hell after 2 years of reviews are in, and they better be at a 90% non failure rate or better.

This survey only took the answers of readers of the magazine, and it is what is called a "voluntary response survey" which makes it useless, because it is taking data on people based on their voluntary responses, and probably the only people who would bother to respond were those really pissed at microsoft for selling them a broken 360, which skews the results

A survey is only accurate when it is a random sample, and the data taken is not based on voluntary response (also they only took the answers from THEIR readers, who are probably hardcore gamers who play more than the average 360 owner, thus giving the system more wear and tear)

don't get me wrong, the 360 failure rate is ludicrously high, much higher than it should be

but don't say this survey is accurate, because it is not, I have taken a number of college level courses in statistics, and this sample is biased because it does not accuratly (and randomly) represent every group of the population it is taking data on (it's data is inferring the failure rate of 360's, and it is only taking data on 360 owners who read and are willing to respond to a game informer survey)

shame on game informer for publishing this like it is fact

My launch console got the RROD. I now have two 360's that I've had for 3 years because I did a fan mod where I give the stock fans 12v by flipping a switch on the back. It toggles from 5v to 12v depending on if I'm watching a movie or gaming. It's a bit loud with 12v but it has proven to keep the system stable.

Obviously, the end user shouldn't have to do such a mod to make a console work but I still love my 360 too much to turn my back! I also have a ps3 and wii but my 360 gets 90% of my gaming attention.

ha...ha...ha........hahahahahahaHAHAHAHAHAHAHA!XD... Sorry. I've never really liked xbox, so this made me smile. I don't think the xbox 360 is a bad system, but this failure rate, plus the fact the only game I would get for it that I couldn't play on something else is halo 3, I've never had a good relationship with them. But I don't dislike xbox users, so don't take offense at this.

My first gen xbox 360 recently RRODd for the second time and I am not a particularly heavy gamer. Not going to get it repaired again. Luckily the Elite model is quite cheap now so I replaced it with one of those. I will sell my dead one and the 20Gb HD on eBay for parts and probably get about £50 for them. Add to this the £70 it would have cost to get the bigger 120 Gb HD and it is not far off what I paid for the Elite. Add the fact the Elite id reeeaaallly quiet compared to the old one and we almost have a win. Still it is bad this happened in the first place.

I'm getting in and out of this thread like a fucking ninja...

In my experience dealing with Sony customer support (for a computer) versus Microsoft for my RRoD'd Xbox I would rather try talking Microsoft to repair an Xbox I trashed in a blender than deal with Sony for a legitimate claim. Just my experience. And I'll say what I have in the past: building a quality product is one thing, but even the best systems break. That's where customer service is vital. I'd rather deal with someone who will fix a problem than someone who won't

And now I'm out of here before this collapses in flames.
I have brought a few Sony electricals in the past and found they generally pack up just after the warranty expires. That is why I will never buy sony again.

Nice, so that means you're just as likely to get a red ring as you are a divorce. Although I'm the lucky minority that hasn't seen a red ring yet.

We *need* to make thread necromancy a punishable offense. This thread is one year old. I don't even know how it was found, and I'm not pointing fingers, but this can't keep happening.

You could say that humans have a death rate of only 94%, since 6 billion of us are alive out of the 100 billion people who have ever lived. Those remaining 45.8% of Xbox 360's are not long for this world, but they're still alive.

I had the impression that an Xbox 360 has a life expectancy, not a failure rate. From what I've heard, that life expectancy is around 2 years, but varies considerably based on how you treat it.

I own an Xbox 360 Elite and I finally had my first RROD after about 3 1/2 years. You wanna know what MS did to me after that. They said the damn warranty was expired and THEN they fixed it for FREE! Those Bastards!

Now my friend who has an older 80GB PS3, had his Blu-Ray player just stop working one day and Sony charged him about $150 to fix it. How awesome is that!

In all honesty though, the Xbox has had more problems with hardware than Sony. I still think Microsoft stands behind their product more than Sony and has done what they can to keep their customers happy.
They've done what they can because if half of their userbase had to pay for bricked consoles they would all switch to PS3's. It isn't the good kindness of their hearts, it's them suffering for releasing shit hardware. They painted themselves into a corner, and they had no choice but to fix every. single. one.

I've had an RROD but I just gave up on it. I have a PS3 that was replaced after one of those firmware glitches that has never had hardware issues. It also doesn't sound like a jackhammer when it runs.

I still play the 360 when my brother is in town and brings his, but I believe that the PS3 is more reliable. Also free online play.

If that is a fair number 5000 is a bit of a rubbish amount really. However if this is true then that is a criminal amount and Microsoft should be investigated for knowledge of a shoddy fail rate

I disagree though because I used to work in a game shop and from an average of sales to returns was about 25%

Hell of a necro, my good man. And not to be a downer but the divorce rate apparently has just passed 60%.

I got nothing against thread necro-ing. It's better than the alternative IMO.

The Red Ring of Death is the only thing keeping me from getting a 360. These nubers scare me about what might happen if I get one.
It is a scary feeling. Like watching a friend die. Its even more pathetic when you are in denial and keep trying to just pretend it still works okay, while you restart over and over again... Until finally you break down in tears over the mountain side, while you and your band of ragtag warriors watch in sadness at the sacrifice he just made. There was no victory here today.
