yeah thats weird. i know .... 12 people with 360's including myself and all of them are still working fine.
altho we all play with them vertical... keeps the vents working properly and reduces heat... that might have something to do with it....

If my Xbox hits me in the head with a RRoD ill just put an AXE to it and then buy a PS3. Eventually buy another 360 while keeping my old one with a hatchet in its side in the corner as a reminder.

That's actually a disgusting amount, how they survived selling such amazingly bad hardware is beyond me.

Ugh, I remember when the red ring of doom got my wonderful 360.
Oh how I miss it.
Now I just have the ps3 left.
(But ironically I had one of those fail on me before and I had to return it.)

Still, despite the high failure rate, and despite Microsoft having the "worst" customer service of the big three, the Xbox 360 somehow maintains strong brand loyalty - only 3.8% of 360 owners surveyed said they'd never buy an Xbox 360 again. I guess we gamers are a forgiving brainwashed bunch.
Fixed that for you. And that's coming from someone who's defended the 360 in the past. Of course I realize the hardware is crap, but the ratio of hours of enjoyment to hours of RROD are high enough where I can't complain that loudly.

While I in no uncertain terms will not defend this horrible lapse in quality testing at Microsoft, I will say that I was satisfied with the way they've handled things in light of it. Example being that, despite not having a warranty, they replaced my bricked 360 for free and then gave everybody a free extended warranty anyway for this problem.

Not that it excuses the problem from happening in the first place, but again this survey seemed to take a poll from 360 owners both new and old, and thus you'd get a lot of first-gen/early adopters who suffered the RROD.

And hey, it could be worse. They could've declared that they had made the most beautiful thing in the world and that it shouldn't be criticized, and that developers and players should just learn to adapt to it.

I own an Xbox 360 Elite and I finally had my first RROD after about 3 1/2 years. You wanna know what MS did to me after that. They said the damn warranty was expired and THEN they fixed it for FREE! Those Bastards!

Now my friend who has an older 80GB PS3, had his Blu-Ray player just stop working one day and Sony charged him about $150 to fix it. How awesome is that!

In all honesty though, the Xbox has had more problems with hardware than Sony. I still think Microsoft stands behind their product more than Sony and has done what they can to keep their customers happy.

I've bought the PS2 three times and my Xbox red ring twice and most recently scratched my GTA disc(wasn't a circular scratch but one that protruded from the middle of the disc outward that almost cut clean through).

It isn't brand loyalty for me, just that both systems were so damn good to me and what am I supposed to do with all the games I've already bought?

Pretty much all of my friends have had the red rings so surprised. Hell if they were to use the group of people I play with the percentage would be alot higher.

Would I get violently beaten if I told that this is why I prefer the PC?

I would take polls like this with a big grain of salt. Just from basic stats and sociology survey's like these are usually biased (ie people who have actual hardware problems would be more likely to answer the survey than those who haven't had hardware problems.) Also a survey that only has 5,000 responses out of...what like 30 million users? Not that reliable.

This is why I don't buy consoles on the first day. Just wait a year, the games are mostly shit anyways in the beginning :(

The 360 is fine (most of the time) against a red ring as long as the person who owns the console has common sense.
The main cause for red ring is abruptly disconnecting the power supply from the xbox before it is turned off
OR
Moving the Xbox WHILE IT IS STILL RUNNING.

Yes, the Xbox would fail a lot by itself anyway but it would probably be only half as bad...
If people were smart enough to figure out you have to switch off a console before you do some crazy stuff.

So yeah, Xboxs' die a lot.
And as long as you look after one you can most likely avoid the Red Ring.
If you are smart enough and got it by not your own fault,
Then you'll probably be smart enough to make sure you don't have to fork out a penny for the inconvenience.
See? People making excuses for the huge screw up's Microsoft made. Blame the user! Not the hardware designer. Just admit that the 360 is a screwed up piece of hardware. It is the truth.

god, that picture of the RRoD scared me. It doesn't surprise me that the 360's mortality rate is about 50%, though.

Mine is still not broken. I've had it for around a year. Also it's not an Elite, it's a Premium.

Eh. It's the one of the costs of getting your next-gen hardware out before anyone else. Less quality testing before launch.

I'd say about 20% of my friends 360's have broken down. Mine is still going strong, although I do take exceedingly good care of mine. They way I see it, its probably going to break down in the next year. My solution? Ring up microsoft and get it fixed for free, wow, so much hassle. Better than giving sony 150 bucks to fix a ps3. I knew the risks when I bought the system and it was still worth the buy.

Actually, the death rate for video consoles is the same as that of human beings. 100%. It just so happens the Xboxes die a bit faster.

Also, doesn't the 360 have some kind of warranty? I'd imagine the RROD is a factory defect.
