Or, maybe it's just a matter of personal luck. I've had two 60GB PS3's fail on me since April, and my 360 Elite is still chugging away just fine. Go figure.
duuuuude, my PS3 just died on me too! :( also, despite all the rumours about the Red Ring of Death, none of my friends who own 360's have ever actually suffered from hardware failures... could it be that the RROD is not as big a problem as we make it out to be?

My console lasted arround 660 Days before it failed (It was first-gen Elite model, bought on bioshocks release date). It cost £50 to get it fixed and 4 day turn around, at time of writing my friend is still awaiting some germans to send his back. The only major problem mine now has is "OMGWTFBBQ nuclear car chains" on Fallout 3, which cause it to hang.

Yes the 360 dies, but so does everything good in life. Get used to it.
The figures will be inflated by whiny n00bs that have nothing better to do.

Note: for those near birmingham, I seriously and fully reccomend this place.

It's were i got mine fixed, and at most you have to wait a week for parts.

The Red Ring of Death is the only thing keeping me from getting a 360. These nubers scare me about what might happen if I get one.
Well, to be fair, if it bricks within 3 years of you buying it, Microsoft will collect, repair, and return it free of charge. Sadly, I know from personal experience, heh.

ya this is my 5th xbox and sadly I would still rather have an xbox than a ps3, because of live.

Dumb question!

Is that figure just the RROD or is it all failures (e74, disc read, power supply etc) I'm not quite clear on it from the article.

My 2-yr-old elite died in May, just a day or two before I graduated high school. That ticked me off to no end.

I've only had mine for going on a year and I've gotten it twice. Then I turn it off and it goes back to normal.

The guarantee in my 360 wore off a week before it broke. This made me suspicous. I think the problem was to do with the fan, E73 or something like that. I saw on youtube or somesuch place that people had had similar problems, also soon after their guarantee had worn off. Anyway, I had to pay microsoft £60 for repairs, and I was not happy.

Would I get violently beaten if I told that this is why I prefer the PC?
Want to talk PC? Sure you do :).

I went through 4 x BFG 6800 OC graphics card before I got one that worked (I needed to contact the BBB.org to resolve the issue). I am currently going through my second XFX 4850 512MB XXX series graphics card, which I will be selling and going nVidia.

In my console gamer life, I've went through 4 x PS2s (one Slim) all with disc read errors which I swear was a far worse defect than the RROD considering everyone I know has had at least one, with many having multiple cases of it. I own two Xbox 360s (Pro and Arcade) and had both RROD on the same day. The Pro while in the open on the TV stand was seldom used so dust could have been a factor. The Arcade (Falcon) on the other hand had no excuse as it was right the in the open in my study (now games room) with at least 1-2 foot clearance from the back and absolutely nothing around it. Pro lasted around a two years and the Arcade lasted over a year.

Even with my 360 woes, I have a hard time believing that this survey is at all accurate. I know at least 15 individuals who have had no issues with their 360s. So if you add my two systems into the group that is 2 out of 17 that have RROD or around 12% failure rate. With only 5000 users who participated in the survey, the results can easily be misleading.

I've had three 360s so far (two RRoDs).

Hey, we can argue that the statistics here are questionable, but I'd say they're pretty close to accurate. Let's just face, guys: 360s have a ridiculous failure rate, and I don't actually doubt that half of all 360 owners have had it fail on them.

Still, despite the high failure rate, and despite Microsoft having the "worst" customer service of the big three, the Xbox 360 somehow maintains strong brand loyalty - only 3.8% of 360 owners surveyed said they'd never buy an Xbox 360 again. I guess we gamers are a forgiving bunch.
i'm kinda wondering about this as well and it's always baffled me, i can only chalk it up to the fact that it's an American company vs a Japanese company

5000 of over a million is not an acceptable poll.
actually it is pretty acceptable and if they surveyed more i'm sure it would go higher if anything else

If this wasn't bad enough though, the IBM PowerPC Processor has always had an issue that would cause many consoles all over the world to simply quit working because of IBM being absolutely useless at fabricating working processors.
oh how your logic fails with Big Blue. this is simple because the Wii, the PS3, the 360, the Gamecube ALL have IBM manufactured processors in them

also discounting the fact that they also made the MAC chips for a long time, also discounting the fact that IBM made chips also populate MANY spots on the list of the fastest computers in the world

Imagine if you never went back to any McDonalds because one you were at messed up your order once.

Honestly, if you get the RROD, it's most likely your own fault. I only have one friend who's Xbox has ever died on him and he is the only person I know who lays it down long ways. [http://www.blogcdn.com/www.engadget.com/media/2007/10/xbox360arcadegallerymain.jpg] When you do that, it's more likely to overheat for obvious reasons. Also, most people who own Xbox's are young and normally young people don't know how to take care of electronics very well. That's just my theory, though.

Interesting.

I'm not that surprised by it's high failure rate though.

I guess I'm lucky I've only been cursed once.
