5000 of over a million is not an acceptable poll.
It's not acceptable for the Wii or PS3 either, but they seemed to fair pretty well.

OP: This seems...exaggerated, I think I'm going to stick with the publicized 16-30% failure rate(Still pretty bad though).
A poor poll is a poor poll, even if the results do seem to correlate with the 'accepted' statistics.
So you would expect game informer to poll everyone who has ever owned the system? Would you rather them put a distinction between the new and old models even though both are still in circulating in great number?

Tell me, what would it require for the poll to be more acceptable?
At least 50,000, though that's still a drop in the ocean.

Preferably? Yes. I would like them to poll everyone who has owned the system. I would like a detailed list of which version they had, whether it failed, how long after they purchased it did it fail and the response time to have it sorted.

Why do a survey if you're not going to collect proper data samples? They didn't even bother differentiating between Arcade/Premium/Elite consoles for those 5,000.

So essentially you are saying, "I need you to meet a set of extremely unreasonable standards before I believe anything in your poll."

*kisses my PS3 then polishes it to a mirror sheen*

Preferably I'd like them to meet my standards. I recognise they're a bit high though. 50,000 and distinguishing which console build they had though? Not so unreasonable. Heck, which console build and how long they'd had it before it failed should have been a basic poll question. I shouldn't even need to suggest it.

50,000 people is unreasonable for a magazine that has deadlines and other things to do, like write articles. The problem with asking for the console build for me is it is essentially trying to state the obvious, MS is getting better at not making a fucked system over time. It still wouldn't defeat the fact that the other older versions are still in circulation and fucking up on quite a few people, it would just say that they are trying to do better.

Well that's how I see it. I suppose I should have asked you why. Why do they need to tell them which version of the system they have? Why do they need to tell you how long they had it?

I'm on my third 360, but i was under the discontinued instant replacement gamestop warranty, so if this one goes down i can aways sell those etra hard drives :p.
I think the brand loyalty thing is for two reasons.
1) the warrenty covers your 360 for 3 years
2) As a 360 owner, the RRoD seems to be the only thing I would put on the "cons" column on a pros and cons list of owning the system (other than the 50$ a year for XBL which isnt too much of a big deal)

This really doesn't surprise me. I had 2 360 Elites go RROD within 5 months, and that with only very casual use.
Meanwhile, the Wii and all of my older consoles still work like a dream, including a 29 year old Atari 2600.
I'll admit though, I did eventually have to replace the connection socket on my NES with a gold one.

My girlfriend's Xbox 360 has been going on since the day it launched. My 2008 Xbox 360 only lasted one year... and my 2009 Xbox 360 likes to restart itself every so often.

Go Microsoft...whoo...

I'm not as forgiving. If I had a 360, and it crapped out on me, I'd be a part of that 3.8%. It's ridiculous, really. Even Windows weekly complains about it!

Still, despite the high failure rate, and despite Microsoft having the "worst" customer service of the big three, the Xbox 360 somehow maintains strong brand loyalty - only 3.8% of 360 owners surveyed said they'd never buy an Xbox 360 again. I guess we gamers are a forgiving bunch
Imagine if you never went back to any McDonalds because one you were at messed up your order once.

Honestly, if you get the RROD, it's most likely your own fault. I only have one friend who's Xbox has ever died on him and he is the only person I know who lays it down long ways. [http://www.blogcdn.com/www.engadget.com/media/2007/10/xbox360arcadegallerymain.jpg] When you do that, it's more likely to overheat for obvious reasons. Also, most people who own Xbox's are young and normally young people don't know how to take care of electronics very well. That's just my theory, though.
Don't make excuses for Microsoft.

Before the 360 you never got this crap with other consoles.

Me and my brother have owned nearly every console made since the SNES and they all work beautifully still, even our old Xbox runs fine and we played that thing to death with Halo 2.

But my brothers 360 got an E74 6 months back and he looked after that console just as well as all the others.

I guarantee that there a lot of other people who have a similar story.

So trying to blame the problems of a terribly made piece of hardware on the user is bullshit and you know it.

If my Xbox hits me in the head with a RRoD ill just put an AXE to it and then buy a PS3. Eventually buy another 360 while keeping my old one with a hatchet in its side in the corner as a reminder.
Haha, the old mutilated 360 serves the purpose of intimidating the new one into not breaking down :D
I like that,
You: "If you fuck up, you end up like my other minion"
New 360 "Gulp, i'll be good. I swear"

I've had my 360 for years now & it's never RRoD'd on me at all. Not to mention that mine was once thrown down some stairs during an argument.

And still running strong!

Buying a 360 is like Russian roulette. They'll either live a good long life or kick the bucket very quickly.

You're telling people not to blame users who took one look at the console and thought "man I totally orient it in a way so it blocks half the vents!"

Hell my friend killed his 360 by laying it down sideways and then putting a PS2 on top of it, effectively blocking off most of its ventilation (this is the same problem that eventually befalls most laptops and computers with balky fans, for comparison, so don't ever say the 360 pioneered heat death). Am I supposed to blame Microsoft for that? They didn't tell him to do that. Hell I even learned from his mistake by, when I had to lay my own 360 on its side, placing some books under it that left the vents open. It's simple common sense. And my 360 replacement is one from before the Jasper architecture, and it has been kicked, moved about, dropped, oriented in both long and short way, and it still keeps on ticking.

Nobody's denying outright that some of the problems aren't because Microsoft effed up in construction, but at the same time some of these problems are because of user negligence. It happens with any piece of technology...unless that technology is made by Nintendo because somehow they've discovered how to make near-indestructible consoles since the 1980s.
