here we go again with dedicated servers, seriously, they are not needed for online gaming at all their are other alternatives.

and yeh Sony isn't big on online gaming are they? *looks up at news about MAG* hmmmmm...

im not a hater to either console, but id rather pay for my membership and know that what im paying for is worth it, than having something free tbh, cause anything thats free i see as not been as good as what you pay for (might not be Sonys case but you get my point)
Nope, dedicated servers DO matter. It's like saying "I don't need a car, I can just cycle everywhere"

For one, anything much beyond a 16 player cap is virtually impossible with user-hosted multiplayer and lag is a huge issue for everyone (especially with a crude matchmaking service) except the host who always has the lowest possible latency.

"id rather pay for my membership and know that what im paying for is worth it"

This just strikes me as a nasty case of cognitive dissonance, which in laymen's terms it's the condition of spending so much money/effort on something to the point of rationalising it to have more value than it actually does.

One thing you have to realise about XBL... just because Microsoft charges you to access it that doesn't mean the money you pay in any way has to be proportionally spent on the service.
i didn't say they didn't matter, i said they are not needed, there are other alternatives even if they are crap, im just sick of hearing dedicated server this, dedicated server that.

anyway, im not one for arguing so im gunna shush before i say summit completely stupid and embarrass myself to the point i wont use this site again XD

Being an owner of an Xbox 360 and access to a PS3, I agree with this guy. Xbox's community can be so foul mouthed and full of shit it makes me wish they'd never learnt how to play games.

PS3'S community is quieter and that's not a good thing in some regards, some times I've been into games of Fat Princess (a team centric game) with absolutely no-one speaking.

They both fail in their own regards. Neither is truly better than the other for this type of thing.

If the PS3 had a free mic, they would have annoying ganster 8 year olds shouting profanity too. To say that this makes the Xbox user base more juvenile, based on the fact that most users have a voice, is just ridiculous.

While online multiplayer on the 360 requires a paid membership, online multiplayer for the same game on the PC is free. L4D and its sequel are, on Steam, free to play online. Also, L4D's paid-DLC on 360 is a completely free patch on Steam--essentially Valve's PC-based native platform.

Not only is L4D not a 360 exclusive, the 360 version is the inferior version. Despite the fact that you have to pay more to get just as much as you'd get for free from the PC version.

There also seems to be fewer obnoxious kids on Steam than there are on XBLA, and that's also a plus.

(As an aside, it's a bad idea to boldface your mistakes for everyone to see them. However, editing them out won't work either. Editing in an admission of "outright mental silliness" is perfectly kosher, though.)

EDIT: Cripes, just caught that bit of bad formatting, hence my own admission of outright mental silliness. And a fix for readability.

Still, Left 4 Dead's four player style has much less potential for griefers than 128 person teams. I mean, I hardly ever used matchmaking, I just played alongside friends.

And L4D is made for the PC primarily...

It's hardly exclusive to the Xbox. It's a PC game too.

A lot of people picked up on the xbox exclusive part. I was talking about consoles, most of microsofts products come out on the PC so pretty much nothing is xbox exclusive if you look at it that way. It might be "inferior" to the PC version, but the post was about Xbox 360 being more Juvenile than the PS3 so i was just showing that the xbox 360 community can work together. Like I have seen usually on this game!

Who knows? I have (and like) both systems. Whenever I play multiplayer on PS3 the connection is so tenuous that I can't hear any complete phrases when the other players try to speak. For all I know they could be saying the vilest stuff on earth, but I'd never hear it.

That being said, he's probably right. Lots of young children have a 360, and their parents probably don't supervise its use. The only children who are likely to have a ps3 are kids with RICH parents, who are more likely to have actually parented (or paid someone to parent) their children.

As one who owns both and has regularly played both (Halo 3 and Gears of War 2 on Xbox & Team Fortress 2 and Modern Warfare 2 on PS3), I have encountered idiots, racists, homophobes and jackasses on both.
THAT SAID:
I encounter a greater ratio of idiot-to-not-idiot on Xbox than on PS3. People have already put forth theories about why that is, I have my own. Believe what you want and why, it's not exceptionally important.

And now to not read the rest of the thread!

I think that because the PS3 is priced so high, fewer people will buy it. That means fewer annoying six-year-olds will have one.

You could have said "which appears on Xbox" and save yourself from ridicule.

Honestly, he's right. His statement is completely true. I play on Xbox Live and online are some of the biggest idiots in the world. There is a more likely chance of someone screaming at you about your mother on Xbox Live than anywhere else. I don't have a PS3, but I do have a PC and if you compare the two, I would rather play PC games online than Xbox Live any time.

A nice cure for this would be the ability of selecting any age range and a gameplay maturity level for yourself, then the teams only being made up of people of similar stats.
It would be nice, but how would you rate maturity level?

And as for age. The most racist, homophobic, foul-mouthed people I've encountered in RL who game on the Xbox are all 25-30 yrs old, not 12 year olds. I nearly pissed myself laughing when one of them started on an EPIC rant into the mic because a French-speaking player joined the channel... it was priceless.

I don't doubt the 12-year-olds are just as bad... but I doubt the behaviour is confined to age.
Maybe not the words "maturity level" but a banter level selector of some sort. ie an ability to select friendly banter level or an intense/unregulated one. Anyone kicking off to an intense level on the friendly channels could be kicked out only able to use the unregulated one for a month or whatever.

As for the age range, I don't doubt what you say about some 20 some things being more racist etc than your average 12 year old, but it'd be nice to separate adults and minors.

I just try to ignore the little sods on XBL, failing that - I mute them.

But I'm kind of surprised that MS haven't tried having all players muted by default and the players need to be un-muted manually by the individual. This will allow idiots to run the mouths off all they like and no-one has to listen to it - unless they opted in to do so.

Since Microsoft really marketed certain games well, a lot of younger people were drawn to the Xbox, only to find that they didn't match up against more veteran players. Then once they're getting beaten they think that swearing is the best response.

It's not that these kids suck in any form, it's rather a combination of probably coming off the campaign only to find that they're not the uber-gods they were in single-player and that they haven't experienced the genre as much as some older players, who can get into the flow and control scheme faster.

Don't worry kids, eventually you'll get better!

The only reason Xbox is more juvenile is because less parents were willing to spend $600 on a console for their kids.

Well, the game is just in beta right now. How it will be trully displayed is when EVERYONE can play and not just a few. Why the heck would a player want to ruin his beta key from swearing? Once everyone can play, who is to stop the swearing than?
