Interesting Strategy Collin, let's see how it plays out for them. - Dodgeball

Seriously, why are you making a console then? The Playstation 5 is gonna have exclusives, because they wanna sell consoles. Microsoft do you not want to sell consoles? Why are you here then?

Look people bought the Xbone because they came from the 360, which had games, but that goodwill is basically gone at this point and people will not just jump into a Series X because they had Xbones. I keep thinking that they think their name alone will be enough to bring people over and it just aint true. Especially if you give Sony a 2-year headstart.

I mean, all Xbox games for the forseeable future are going to be ported to the PC, which is a wide range of hardware. I suppose it makes complete sense to support the Xbox One in all of its forms, seeing as scalable graphics options are going to be in the game anyway.

From a business standpoint... If I was a customer looking to upgrade their current-gen console, I would probably buy a PS5 over an Xbox Series X, if I can still play new games on my current Xbox One, but I wont be able to play the new PS games without the new console.

Its a great pro-consumer choice, but I feel like Microsoft would just be shooting themselves in the foot, unless they are hoping that overall game sales by supporting both markets will make up for the loss in console sales.

Its a strange choice.

Is it though? Because while you can tunw down graphics and such. Things like level design and Artificial intelligence will need to be toned down. Because you can't actually use all the power available to you, devs will need to scale back the potential for their games in order to run effectively on older hardware.

Either that or make 2 versions of their games, which would cost too much time or money to be feasible.

Meanwhile,Playstation 5 will ( most likely) have better looking, bigger more engaging games, because they can tap into all the potential of the console.

It is a lot easier to build for one console than it is for multiple.

Congrats Microsoft, you gave me another reason to not buy your console aside from backwards compatibility. I swear, ever since they Scalebound being cancelled I want nothing to do with them.

It doesn't seem to really mesh up well with other facts either. Microsoft just went on a bit of spending spree grabbing Obsidian, the Hellblade guys (I forget the name), and others.

Are they then pushing all their games to 2020? Releasing them on the other two consoles? If some indie dev rolls up and wants to only make an Xbox version of a game (for whatever reason), are they gonna turn them away?

More likely these seems to probably be PR fluff, because the share over to Windows makes exclusives not exclusives on a technicality, even though both are MS platforms in the end.

Well, it certainly won't help their image as 'the console that doesn't have exclussives' that they've been trying to shed since buying up all those studios.

But who knows, maybe this'll end up being a stroke of genius somehow. It's not like I'm a business man.

I still say that Xbox's strategy is to train their userbase up to gaming PCs as Xbox becomes a gaming PC brand, but I don't pay enough attention to console news to see if they're continuing that with these new ones or not. They're still trying to integrate their Xbox and PC digital storefronts and multiplayer services through the same programs.

And nobody really counts PC games as exclusive.

Seeing the public reaction to this has been....informative. As much as I love to shit on MS given half a chance, and they do deserve it whether inside or outside their gaming arm, I cannot in good faith get on board with the derision for this decision, as it appears to be more coming from what people's idealistic perception of what a new console should do on launch as opposed to what it generally often works out doing. Looking back at all other launch exclusives, they have unanimously prioritised graphics over everything else for those precious marketing screenshots and videos, an element easily downgraded. While the best exclusives take more time and experience with the hardware for the devs. There's this ideal that the new games must come with the "it won't work on previous hardware no matter what we downgrade....it just can't be done!" Yet MS are releasing all their exclusives on PC anyway, which by its very nature has to be optimised for all sorts of setups, so it's not exactly new ground for them to apply it to their consoles. Witcher 3 is now on Switch for crying out loud, the possibilities are endless!
This seems like another issue of the fickle masses maintaining a perception that is out of synch with reality, though I wouldn't put the blame entirely on them as this industry revels in hype cycles which they zealously encourage, so if it does bite MS in the sales department, they've only themselves to blame for pushing these perceptions in the first place. The point is, I don't think the worry about their launch exclusives getting any shitter is worth the bother.

Really, if that?s the case a better strategy would be to take a play from Nintendo?s book, but add power to it. IE just wait until 2022 to launch the damn thing with even beefier specs at a price that would probably be below a weaker PS5.

I really don?t think Microsoft ever knew what they were doing with Xbox; only that they wanted in on the consumer living room somehow. Really, their best effort to-date only succeeded initially because it was rushed out a year early, and even then they ended up paying for that decision with all the RRoD insanity.

This could end up being a bigger developer hell than PS3 multiplats with these different specs to think about. Quality control on consoles needs to be tighter unless they plan on allowing the PC modding scene to carry over.

The latest industry trend is for consoles to be modifiable now but forgetting the static nature of console hardware is why developers have always gravitated towards them in the first place.
