Yahoo News Comments are evil

Whenever I read yahoo news comments, I see a lot of right wing bigotry. Racism against blacks, Islamophobia, fundamentalism, misogyny, classism, homophobia, and in one case, transphobia. I've always wondered how the christian right would be perceived in other countries. Do other countries really think Americans are all the backwards-thinking bible thumpers demonstrated in yahoo news comments? How would people put up with Romney's 47% comment or Todd Akin's legitimate rape comment in Norway?

I also notice that comments in a lot of articles are stupid.
I read an article about how a study proved video games didn't cause violence, and one of the comments said something along the lines of 'if a few seconds of an advertisement convince us to buy something, think about what hours on a game can do to our kids' I think that's more or less word for word. It shows me that this person doesn't understand either advertising or gaming.
And like you said, people only tend to comment if their view is really, really stupid.

Some people think all Americans are reactionary fundamentalist dickheads yeah. However, if those people take a step back, they would realise that makes them no better than the people they're sneering at. Most people are aware it's just a stereotype though.

Oh, and in most European countries, people like Akin or Romney would never get near public office, so no one would give a shit what they say.

I noticed the Right Wing comments picked up towards the fall during the US presidential campaign. There are stories that there are people being paid to do nothing but post negative comments under numerous user names--swamping the comments section as early as possible.

I'm beginning to suspect that there may be some truth to those stories.

They also seem to think that the streets of the US are bustling with rednecks firing automatic rifles and 12-gauge shotguns into the air.

OT: The internet is gonna internet. Extra hard on religious or political topics, which is why I always avoid them if I can.

To scrutinize another area of 'teh interwebz', Youtube comments are the public bathroom stalls of the internet.

If you think that's bad, you should see other news websites that got comment fields below the new/ articles.

How about looking at them as the balancing out of the slant of the Yahoo article itself.

Every extreme seems to invoke that which balances it out.

Having pretty much unrestricted internet access at work I've recently discovered the delicious car crash spectacle that is the BBC News website comments, hours of fun trawling through the "We're all doomed!" "It's Thatcher all over again!" "Thatcher did nothing wrong!" "1984! 1984! 1984!" Makes the day go in that little bit faster.

That is perhaps the scariest thing about americans, sure every country has its share of lunatics, fundamentalists and whackos... but we don't elect them to public office.

1984? Somehow I doubt that someone posting some of the retarded comments I've seen in such places would have read anything more challenging than the Beano. Although Billy the Whizz does have some inciteful commentary on modern politics.

Yahoo comments are hilariously bad. The only reason why I subscribe to them on Facebook.
"Obummer" has to be the best thing they have come up with yet.

Well fandom is evil too. You can't google a cartoon without encountering rule 63, Mary-Sue OCs, shipping (because being just friends is apparently not allowed), slashing (gay/les shipping), humanizing (human ponies/overtly human Adventure Time), animalizing (turning humans into furries), breast inflation, characters fattened up & covered in stains & crumbs, bound & gagged, gratuitous nudity in a sexy pose with a come-hither look that it beyond out-of-character.... I think that anyone in the mindset that "if it has legs, it needs to get laid even if it's a cartoon" needs some serious therapy.

Speaking for the people around me that I know, we certainly don't believe every American is a crazy right-wing gun-slinging redneck but we do believe you guys have a lot more of those than we've got here in the Netherlands.

Even 5% of the population being like that can seem like a LOT if you're used to 0,1%.

Couldn't agree more. There's a good reason I've only posted once in the hellhole known as the Yahoo! News comments section (complimenting a very rare witty remark). Strawmen / ad-hominem / slippery slope arguments are the norm (often using all 3 in tandem), and discrimination against gays / minorities / Muslims is praised there. They also use "Obummer", as many of them call Obama, as a scapegoat for absolutely everything whether or not he has anything to do with it (btw before someone asks, I can't stand Obama or Romney and do not support either political party).

EDIT:

I am inclined to agree with the whole youtube comments section being worse. I watched the PS4 announcement live on there (escapists stream kept going down)and as soon as the japanse dude came on from capcom, the racist comments were flooding in. To add to appearance of people with the average IQ of a particularly stupid rock, when the new capcom game came on (explicitly named Deep Down at the start of the clip) were all shouting SKYRIM 2! There were also complaints when it showed games that weren't FPS, saying, and I quote "wot is ths gayy shiitt".

on topic: Not everyone percieves the USA in that way. I, for instance, know that there are people that are deeply religious, and that there are gun-nuts and rednecks and stuff, but I know that the population isn't completely made up of such people. We also have very deeply religious people in not-so-Great Britain, and some people who love guns (we don't have rednecks though, we have chavs instead).

No, I think it's good. It just goes to show that freedom of speech is in action, and gives comedy material on top of that. What annoys me is the fact that they close the comments section of anything remotely interesting or profound. So instead people have to find ways to be bigoted dickheads on the most banal of topics, and when you actually want to contribute something on a serious issue, you can't.

Admittedly, I've seen way less horridly evil crap get upvoted on Youtube than on Yahoo. Then again, the areas of Youtube that I frequent wouldn't cover the worst of the worst, so I can only speak from what I've seen.

There are good and bad people in all cultures really, but in America I think it is more prominent due to it being such a huge country. I dunno really, but i know for certain there are some really great, intelligent, amazing Americans and then there are also the shitheads who say all this racist, homophobic etc. stuff. Good and bad people are everywhere.

Some comments on article about celebrities are harsh.
I dont even understand why some people bother posting to point out about the write's grammatical error etc too.
