I want to make cartoon videos. And I liked the little stick figures of Yahtzee's videos. I was wondering if anyone could tell me where I could get such software as to design small stick figure men, because Windows Movie Maker is shit; but if anyone could tell me of a way of making such a video I would like to know, and maybe how to gear the software too if possible? :p

I don't need the software to involve speach talking or anything like Yahtzee's, because I will only use it to explain science on youtube, so the speech software is not vital.

Thank you for any help :)

Yeah, MS paint will do all that you need for that, or flash if you want to be extra fancy. Have fun with your software.

I made a parody in photoshop (it was for a college project - seeing if the style could be transferred to informing people about charity - Vroshaw knows about it).

All you need is an image editor, some inventive thinking and windows movie maker.

It isn't hard to do what Yahtzee does, just use Flash and Windows Movie Maker (or some other video creating client).
Bump. Its Software not softwear. Unless Yahtzee happens to wear cartoons. Wouldn't surprise me.

You can't even select things in MS paint properly! All you can do is select whole squares, so if I want to move a circle around the screen Im royally fucked! Seriously is there any tips on wha to do with this?

Hmm, I could have sworn I posted on this topic...

Anyway, to repeat myself, it's Photoshop, Not MS Paint, that Yahtzee uses. I understand that GIMP is a decent alternative if you don't feel like shelling out for it.

FOR EXAMPLE:

I can draw a yellow backround and a white circle, but the circle has no outline, how can I possibly get it to have a nice thick black border around it? Secondly how come Yahtzee's elongated circles are all nice and circular (just abit extended in the middle) while all I can manage to do is draw a rectangle with smooth edges.... its all flat lines...

And how can you possible insert them into Windows Movie maker for the exact length of time you need when in-fact you only need it up there for less than 2 seconds, and WMM only shows you the "time line" that lasts for 30 minutes, and won't allow you to "zoom in" to let you fine tune it =/

I feel like such a noob -.-

Photoshop

Fantastic, that sounds like a better alternative, does he use that WITH windows movie maker too? If it is photoshop then can someone link me to where I can buy it (or perhaps get it for free, I'm not above illegal copys/downloads :p)
How comforting to know you're willing to steal for your art. Let Google be your guide to finding a legitimate copy of Photoshop, but be aware that it is an expensive piece of software, which is why I mentioned GIMP, which happens to be free.

It might also be worth looking up some tutorials on Movie Maker as it sound like you have no idea what you're doing. About your specific query though, there is a zoom button on the time line. It's possible to view the time line in increments of about a fifth of a second I think.

Using this method is basically making a slide show. You prepare your slides, then open them in Movie Maker and then adjust their timings so they are in synch with the audio. I warn you, it is a slow process.

The only problem with GIMP being that its user interface is not exactly what you'd call user-friendly. The multiple window thing for tools and pictures doesn't work particularly well on Windows, which doesn't even have the multiple desktops thing to separate the GIMP window from other windows that you have open.
I've never used GIMP so I wasn't aware of that. I use Photoshop for all my videos (which links to can be found in my profile - shameless plug)

But seriously, the animation Yahtzee does it basic, he admitted so himself somewhere when he mentioned how he started doing his videos the way he does (in short: "cause I suck at drawing and know fuck all of animations"), it's his writing and how he applies the animation that make his videos grand.

To do an animation like him, however, all you really need is Photoshop, where you make all the frames one by one, and then Windows Movie Maker, where you do an animation "hardcore mode", like people used to do before CGI was invented: A series of images played sequentially one after the other really fast so it appears things are moving.

I'm guessing the voice is previously recorded using his headset and added to the timeline in Windows Movie Maker, after which the animation is added and adapted.

If he's anything like me, he storyboards first, writes and records the audio then makes the images.

He writes the script. He uses the other Adobe app (not photoshop the other one) to make the toons and then he animates it with movie maker

Your being awfully lenient today Nilcypher. Anyway to answer the OP, it is quite possible to do it in MS Paint, if you have an undying love for constantly multi-saving and reloading to fix your mistakes.

That's what I meant. It's far easier to adapt the images to the sound than the sound to the images.

Although, to be quite honest, I don't think he does much "storyboarding" at all.

You know, you could just look for zero puctuation sprites. Then just copy and paste everything.

From what I've been hearing and seeing from the man him self and my assumtions:
[li]Writes reveiw[/li]
[li]Draws Storyboard[/li]
[li]Makes in the order of 400 pictures in Photoshop[/li]
[li]Records Himself, probably with Audacity[/li]
[li]Shticks it all together in Movie Maker[/li]
[li]Done.[/li]

Movie maker is a perfectly fine editing program as long as you don't plan on complex RGB or Light Index level editing o Keyframing.

and photoshop's user interface is any more friendly than the gimp? i'd have to say they are about on par with one another for user friendlyness

I've just had a look at some screenshots of GIMP, and I have to agree. It looks strikingly similar to Photoshop.
