Well, not to sell you online multiplayer it can be fun, just make sure you go on during afternoons or early evenings then you'll get mature players. Hell, I am not an experienced player compared to some but I don't get discouraged by barely getting kills because it can be fun to interact. I don't think I'm ruining someon's experience unless I didn't know they just started online.
It's just like being on big forums like the escapist: You really don't know the person you're interacting with, yet you have a good time.
