There must have been so many of these threads, but I don't remember when the last one was. Tell us what your favourite national anthem is and what the preferred anthem of your own country would be.

I wondered for a while what life must have been like in East Germany at the height of the Cold War and the closest the Doomsday Clock has ever been to midnight. I don't imagine they'd have had the sort of freedoms enjoyed by their neighbours over the wall, but both halves of Germany had a heck of an inspiring anthem.

I picked this old hymn as the top candidate for a national anthem mainly due to fond memories of singing it in chapel services. It always seem so sad and full of longing, but beautiful and hopeful at the same time.

So, how about you?

There's many to pick from, but the Israeli anthem is hauntingly beautiful, you can feel the suffering the Jewish people have experienced over history:

As for my own United Kingdom, I like God save the Queen as it is, simple but a classic. However I think it would be fitting if England itself had it's own anthem like Scotland and Wales do, and I think this would be the best choicce:

Beyond the religious symbolism, it's essentially a hymn about fighting to improve our country and build a paradise (a "new Jerusalem") on this green and pleasant land.

I've always liked the Russian national anthem since I was introduced to it from playing as Spetznaz in CoD 4:
Don't know what it means in English, but it sounds badass

My vote goes for the Jubrovia (or whatever he says) bit from this old Billy Connelly routine (about 1:20 to 2:00 if you wanna skip straight to it)

Actually I can remember watching that when it was on TV, and damn does it look dated now!

My favourite is the Kazakhstan anthem, as sung by Borat.
It is truly the only logical step forward for patriotism.

Favourite national anthem? Probably this one:

Shit makes me want to salute and stick out my chest in pride like no other. If there's one anthem I wouldn't mind going under stalwartly it's that one.

My ideal anthem for my home country The Netherlands?

Hue.

The song reaches its biggest potential in this context. [https://1d4chan.org/wiki/Old_Man_Henderson#Dropping_The_Yacht] God bless you Henderson & Breckenridge.

As an atheist republican who views the value royal family entirely in how much money they can bring the economy, I find God Save the Queen to be rather disconnected from me. Although I find patriotism rather disturbing, so that's not much of a problem.

If you need a stirring anthem for the glorious revolution turned glorious dictatorship, look no further my Basenji comrades.

On a more serious note, the American and German national anthems always make me well up with hypernationalistic pride, despite not being a citizen of either country.

I came here to say that America's national anthem should be Queens 1977 hit We are the champions/ We will rock you.

Well, I know what my national anthem should be:[vimeo=2448083]

However, in terms of my nation's national anthem, it's a toss between...
Can't you tell I'm good at choosing national anthems?

My ideal national anthem would be none. Ideally i'd like to see nationalism go away and we just identify as a global humanity. Nationality is just another layer of tribalism that promotes an Us vs Them world.

I'd say Scotland should go for "Scotland the Brave", only it should never be sung, just performed at people by massed bagpipes and hordes of drummers.

"Working Class Man" would be better than "Advance Australia Fair".

Not being a terribly patriotic Canadian or Quebec native - despite my being proud as Hell of my being francophone - I tend to look to the rest of the world and its infatuation with self-aggrandizing musical themes a bit odd.

I suck at rhymes or basic poetry, but I'd take an honest anthem any day of the week, honestly.

"We're not the best nation out there but we sure as shit ain't the worst either! We've got our own problems, sure, but who doesn't have them! Our politicians are only mildly corrupt, we're not all working under the assumption that God prefers us, so we're not packing some out-of-place Colonial Era haughtiness!

We're not the best, but our people are swell! Come and stick by us for decent jobs and a bit of the ol' funtimes!"

None.

I would also say the same about our flag, political leadership. Unfortunately all ballot papers never provide that option. If the reason being is because people everywhere in Australia would tick it, then it's not a good argument for democracy to begin with.

If we're just talking about taste, I would like Australia to have 99 Luftballons... sure it's in German, but Germans are nice and I see no problems with showing them that we think their popculture is fun.

It is criminal that the anthem of the UK is not the theme from Doctor Who.
Which Doctor era theme are we talking about?
To be honest I wasn't even thinking about the different variations on the song.

Which actually means that subconsciously I meant Tom Baker's run, because that was my favorite incarnation, and some of my earliest memories of/ exposure to the show.

Either way, pre Russell T Davies revival (Though I do enjoy the new shows, the old stuff had a more anthemic feel, at least to me).
