This thread is actually unrelated to the D&D one. I just happened to be thinking about this when it went up.

Anyway, I'm borrowing my sister's copy of Skyrim at the moment but before I delve back into it, I could use some ideas for an interesting character. My last few have been pretty archetypal sword-and-shield wielding warriors and back-stabby rogues, and I find myself growing bored with them fairly quickly. Unfortunately I lack the imagination to come up with much else.

So I ask you (so that I might steal them for myself): who was your most interesting Skyrim character?

skyrim gets dull really fast when you play just another warrior or thief, or jack of all trades. personally ive found the most interesting characters and longest lived ones have self imposed limitations and quirks not to mention playing something you never would.

my current character is a battlemancer a shield and sword warrior that only uses conjuration magic and doesnt use bows. who is obbsessed with collecting books, jewelry making and cooking. she doesnt use trainers and doesnt grind skills specifically to raise them. also helps shes a high elf who hates the thalmor and works for the empire.

id check out some fantasy character background generators online as they can really help.
My current character is an Imperial Soldier, who after getting in over her head, is sent to solstheim to discover what exactly is happening there. She also just happens to be dragonborn, yes.

I have an orc Warrior that just bashes people in the face with a shield. That's fun. It took a while to kill people but they didn't kill me.

My most interesting one would have to be a nudist Breton Conjurer that also likes all the shiny things that are locked up or in other peoples pockets. He prefers to summon atronachs to do his dirty work, but having a zombie chicken follow him around Whiterun is so much fun.

This is actually one of the problems I have with Skyrim. Every character can and (given enough time) will become good at everything. It just feels very samey and generic. As you said, sword wielding warrior, Stabby rogue etc.

I think my Fist o' death character, and Orc which wore nothing but fist armour, was probably the most fun I'd had out of all my characters.

Mine's a Hunter-Gatherer type fella. Will only use bows and knives, and the early light armours that have fur and leather. God I wish Skyrim had spears.

I'm trying to make a living off selling pelts, meat and other stuff I find on my hunts, whilst brewing poisons and cooking food. Its pretty cool, but progress is slow. It's more of a chill-out character, I don't think I've even embarked upon any real quests yet... A house will be needed at some point though, so I guess I'll have to help Whiterun out.

I made a non-lethal Kajit thief.

The idea was that she would never kill people or sentient creatures, but would have no problem poisoning, freezing, paralysing or frightening people, or even getting them killed by other people. She was going to use illusion, stealth, alchemy and archery (weak arrows with fear or paralytic poison). She would carry a knife called Last Resort.

I called her the Malevolent Pacifist.

Sadly, she was my second character and I never got her far past the intro. The idea of playing through all that dreary content for a second time made me feel a little ill.

I usually devise these fairly elaborate characters during down time at work and write back stories and include NPCs or mods and personal conflicts. Then I get home and play the game exactly as I would with any other character.

Well, not exactly, but you get the idea. I find it really hard to pretend a farmer outside of Whiterun is your father when all he does is ask you to pick wheat when you talk to him, and then demands you leave his house after nightfall.

Far more feasible in Fallout NV in my opinion is a diplomatic character who never carries weapons, maxes Speech and Charisma first, and has 1 or 2 sidekicks to do all the dirty work. Currently in Skyrim I'm playing an intellectually challenged heart-of-gold fighter. It's harder than I expected to go through the game with no healing magic/alchemy.

I also try to make a semi-believable reason for all the...*ahem* armor/clothing mods.

Sadly, as fun as the game is, the player character is quite literally an everyman and a noman. No personality, class, stats, good/evil, restrictions or bonuses means Dovahkiin is a dull boy.

My portrait and 2D sprite in BG2 had 100x the personality of the Dovahkiin.

I started this and ended up with a fun little combination for now. I also decided to now follow some major story arc and just pick up some random quests. I'm stuck in dead emperor's mind right now with Sheorogath....Good times... Good times...

I basically made my skyrim character Cole Macgrath from Infamous, and tried to play through it pretending he was sent back in time, and only using powers similar to Cole's. It's really goddamn fun..I also refused to wear clothes until I could find something that looked like his regular outfit

I actually managed to make it look pretty much exactly like him ^_^ I documented all his adventures in a photo album somewhere

The most interesting ones I've played were the most archtypical ones I could think of. I have:

A Breton Geomancer - Wields the Two-handed hammer WorldRoot that drains both Stamina and Magicka while commanding the elements! He wears the lightest of armors if he isn't wearing mage's robes, and can summon elementals as well as cast elemental magics! Damage mitigation is his speciality along with absorbing most forms of magical attacks.

A Nord Deathknight - Wielding a Daedric Battleaxe known as Hell Reaver and clad in enchanted Daedric Armor, she excels in brutal melee combat while possessing the abilities to summon and command the dead. With Hell Reaver's deadly combination of Fiery Soul Trap and Life Steal, combined with her ability enchanted armor, there are few in all of Tamriel that can stand toe to toe with her.

A Dark Elf Ranger - Mimicing the likes of Drizzt Do'Urden, this male Dalk Elf is a master in dual wielding sword combat as well as ranged combat. Having mostly support magic, he is nigh invincible when he gets the drop on opponents. He can also summon his etheral pet for added carnage!

An Imperial Paladin - This mace wielding holy knight is the exact opposite to the Nord Deathknight. However, where the Deathknight excels in offensive capabilities, the Paladin is equally matched in her defensive capabilities. Whether wielding the enchanted holy mace known as Judgment or wielding the Daedric sword Dawnbreaker, she dispatches the undead and summons with the greatest of ease. She is a master at Restoration while having Expert knowledge of Alteration and is also an Expert in the ways of Block and Heavy Armor. No adversary of hers will find her to be an easy foe to kill.

Now, if only they brought back spears, me and my Redguard Dragoon would have some magical moments...

None. Skyrim is teh sux0r lol.

Seriously though, there was so little roleplay in a damn role playing game it's actually quite shocking. Do I have to make my speech about the dismal conversation "options" again?

Now my Fallout: New Vegas characters I could go on forever about... I am forever amazed how Obsidian rolled in and upstaged Bethesda at their own game so easily.

Anyway I guess this one Argonian stealth/warrior/archer guy was pretty funny. The Adventures of Captain Indecisive. I practically roleplay a mage hater in all Skyrim and Oblivion playthroughs because 1. I don't like namby pamby pew pew magic, I prefer manly men sword fighting and 2. All the Mage Guild quests in both games fucking suck.

My most interesting character was my sneaky sneaky wood elf archer... until I ran out of things to do with her :( She has more money than she knows what to do with (when her kid asks her for money she gives him 1000 septims. I would happily give him more if I was allowed, seriously 10,000 septims is pocket change at this point).

Currently my most interesting character is Surius the Imperial, weilding a mace and a shield. While he does go for the occassional cave venture and take out bandits every once and a while, a big thing of what he does is... farming.

Yeah that's right. He wanders around Skyrim and picks crops and gets paid for his labour. And this is currently my most interesting character. He's married (with someone I had to add via console commands) and plans to completely furnish Lakeside Manor and then adopt two kids (girls, because little boys are a terror) and be a loving husband.

Eventually he'll probably feel guilty for leaving Riverwood hanging and finally go see the Jarl of Whiterun, and get pulled into this annoying Dragonborn business. I'm leaving that off for as long as possible though, dragons crashing in whenever they feel like it can get annoying.

I have 2 characters whom contend for "Most interesting"

1) My vampire - Sneaking around with a bow taking people out and draining their health, often was at the higher stages of vampirism. Was very interesting (Especially when I needed to feed, I tended to use a specific person in Whiterun who's housekey I stole off them... Though the amount of times I fed upon them must have left them with no neck...)

2) My 26th character was very fun to play, I'd modded it so that the Werewolf transform was toggled and basically went around using no weapons, no magic and only my teeth and claws. Instead of armour or clothing I wore Forsworn stuff (The most likely to be a cobbled together outfit of things I had gathered - Animal hides and such)

Due to the lack of using anything it meant that I stayed low level and so everything was pretty strong by comparison (Unlike other character whom play on the hardest difficulty and don't die... Probably due to the fact you can buy hundreds of health potions and still own the entire gold supply for the world...)

One issue is when going into towns though, I modded it so that story critical characters could die (Also children) which meant I could occasionally get locked out of quests... Though considering I finished my character off by killing every NPC in every town, it mattered very little.

Cyrion Septim, an Imperial warrior. Not his real name but the one he took once he discovered he was Dragonborn. Now he is trying to use the connection between the Dragonborn and the Septim Emperors to find out if he descends from some branch of the Spetim line. Whether or not he is is unknown, it is very unlikely that anyone is properly related to the Spetim line anymore so he is most likely a fraud.

However, Cyrion does have a plan for his own path to power, by assassinating Titus Mede and Amaund Motierre. There is no one on the throne now and by rising through the ranks of the Imperial Legion Cyrion is attempting to gain the loyalty and support of prominent military figures to back up his rise to power.

While in Skyrim he is attempting to defeat the Stormcloak rebellion, something he can use to gain further support and explore the land, if he can gain the support of the Jarls of Skyrim and the people he hopes other provinces of the Empire will support him, then perhaps he will assume de facto control of the Empire and achieve his eventual goal of crushing the Thalmor. If he can reunify Skyrim and defeat the Dominion Cyrion believes popular support will take him to the throne.

I had a Khajiit thief that was pretty fun, she would instantly shift from her jester suit (gained from having killed Cicero) to full daedric armor when spotted to punch things to death. Mostly though she just did whatever she felt like, going on random pickpocketing sprees to steal inconsequential amounts of gold, becoming a werewolf and rampaging through Markarth, and of course always pickpocketing the other thieves guild members to punish them for having the worst written plotline in the game. It was always fun when they ragged on at Mercer for having stolen from the guild, while I have a hand in one of their pockets at that exact moment.

Copied and pasted from another topic:

The last character I made was a female Breton who had never had an ounce of combat training in her life, and found herself lost and alone is Skyrim (fyi, I was using the 'Live Another Life' mod, which let's you start out somewhere besides Helgen). And it was, by far, the best damn character I have ever played in an RPG. I essentially put her on autopilot and watched her develop on her own from a weak little pissbag to an extremely capable warrior...a warrior who drank herself into depression because she became wrapped up in a war that she never truly wanted to be a part of. And the backstory I gave her added a whole new layer of depth to the game. I'm not going to bore everyone with it, so I'll just sum it up: she was VERY pissed at the bandits in Mistwatch. Despite her lack of training, she wanted to see them all dead by her hands.

Now think about this for a moment. On an average playthrough, Mistwatch is just your typical roadside dungeon that you wander into out of curiosity and finish in five minutes, never to think of it again. But this time? When I finally saw her standing in front of it, fully armored and wielding a large warhammer, knowing full well that this act of vengeance might take her life? (Incidentally, I had decided she was a perma-death character) Mistwatch had gone from being an average dungeon and was now like the terrifying last level that the game had been building up to for hours on end. It was far more meaningful and impactful then the main storyline could ever hope to be.

And that's just the tip of the ice-burg. I could gush about a huge life-changing moment that occurred a few hours in that shaped the character for the rest of her life (and ultimately led to her death), but I doubt anyone really wants to read a novel on my Skyrim RP.

I've mentioned this guy here before, but I'll bring him out again cuz I like him.

I have an Argonian named "Caliban" who never travels far from water. He doesn't pursue any major quests, but travels along the water ways (from the lake by Bleak Falls Barrow all the way around to the river by Markarth, searching for sunken treasures and helping who he can along the way. He's mainly interested in helping other Argonians, but will likely also get involved if a mission involves killing pirates or gangs. He has a bit of a religious avenger complex, since he came into Skyrim fairly naive and learned about the deadly and destructive ways of Skyrim in an emotional way. He kinda resembles the devil and the grim reaper, being red and horned while usually wearing a black robe and using an axe that resembles a scythe.
