Your Name Surpasses Spirited Away As Highest Grossing Anime Film Worldwide

Makoto Shinkai's Your Name has grossed a total of US$281 million worldwide.

Even people who have no idea about anime and manga have heard of Studio Ghibli's Spirited Away, the tale from legendary director Hayao Miyazaki of a girl lost in the land of spirits. Since its release back in 2002 it has held the title of highest-grossing anime movie worldwide, but now, Makoto Shinkai's Your Name has just bumped it off the list.

According to Box Office Mojo [http://www.boxofficemojo.com/movies/?id=yourname.htm] Your Name has now grossed a total of US$281 million worldwide, beating out Spirited Away's US$275 million.

What's really impressive about this number is that Your Name still hasn't come out in the US! It is slated to open in 92 countries and territories, including in the United States through Funimation in the first quarter of this year, so these profits are just from Japan, China, Taiwan, Hong Kong, South Korea and Thailand. Expect it to completely smash the Spirited Away record when it finally receives a wider release!

Your Name tells the story of a teenage boy living in Tokyo and a teenage girl living in rural Japan who suddenly wake up in each other's bodies. Though it may sound a lot like other Freaky Friday-type movies the plot in Your Name thickens quite a bit, and becomes a heartwarming and suspenseful tale.

I would highly recommend seeing if if you get the chance!

Do these numbers account for inflation? I did a quick check on Box Office Mojo and couldn't tell, but I don't think it did. According to the US BLS, $275m in 2002 is $367m today. Still impressive, and Your Name will probably exceed that after its full worldwide release, but it's always good to be careful when comparing money from different years.

Deservedly so, because this film is brilliant. It's the best film I've seen that released in the UK in 2016.

Haven't seen it, but I don't think Shinkai has ever made a good movie. Your Name probably falls within all his other shallow, sentimental scenery porn.
Can't speak for his other work, however in terms of Your Name I can safely say you are wrong.

Spirited Away has much more depth and much better production value.
From what I've heard the difference between this one and his others is a decent script, so the visuals and empathy he typically pulls off pretty well are combined with a story worth telling. Even the reviewers I follow who largely dislike Shinkai thought it was great, a few labeling it their favorite movie of 2016. All signs point to him having done a good.

Does Your Name have this CGI that is made to look like 2D models?

Nope. Or, if it's there, you'd never notice.

Factually wrong. And I know its factually wrong without even checking because I've seen it in the cinema here in the UK. Twice. Before Christmas.

But to check properly...IMDB:

Your Name has been released fully in seventeen countries at this point by my count down that list (excluding film festival one-offs). Including the UK, France, Italy and Australia.

The film was basically the best movie to come out in 2016. Definitely go see it when you finally get it over there in the US.

Knowing my local theatre, it'll be one night only, midnight screening only on a work night. Then it'll be replaced with some Bollywood crap.

Another shinkai film, huh? Well, those are usually worth a watch.

He's certainly no Miyazaki, but he's not nearly as bad as his detractors make him out to be.

What?
It took me a minute too, but then I read the full thing and realized he was talking about the statement that it was "Only released in China, Japan, Taiwan, Hong Kong, South Korea, and Thailand".

Yes, sorry. I quoted the original piece directly and that had those words in bold already.

Highlighting not my own in that one. ^_^
