Armed and Dangerous. It's great fun and absolutely hilarious. Oh, and the land shark gun. One of the best parts of that game.

From what I've seen of the Escapist, this might not be considered all that 'underrated', but from how I personally feel about a game? Gotta be:

Sure, it actually received decent ratings when it came out, and both non-fans and fans of Star Wars alike have positive things about it to this day, but I felt at the time it came out like nowhere near enough people played it, and even less appreciated its significance.

Here was a game that proved you didn't need lightsabers, Force powers and Jedi to make a console game feel like Star Wars and stay fun to play. To this day, I can only think of one other that managed it, and that's the first Battlefront (hipster opinion: the better of the two). It had tons of atmosphere, managed to render down that most generic of all Star Wars cannon fodder - the freaking clone army - into four surprisingly different, surprisingly likeable characters, and not only were you able to splatter Geonosian goo all over your screen with a knife (that came out of your goddamn wrist way before Assassin's Creed), it even had a little energy thing to wipe it all off again. Immersion!

Having a gun that was actually three guns was badass, and dat squad AI... Man, at the time it seemed like perfection. Honestly, I feel RC taught lessons that a lot of games today could still stand to learn from. The simplicity of giving orders, the squad being useful... but mostly, the idea that if you can revive squadmates, they should be able to revive you.

Long overdue for a sequel, IMO. Just imagine that game with current gen graphics and Imperial rather than Republic gear...

*Sigh*

I'm surprised noone has mentioned Alpha Protocol yet, it usually pops up in these threads a lot.
Oh alright, plan B. Psychonauts. Really really. And remember, his name might not start with a D, but Raz is quite the fun rascal to play.

Tomba! It makes you go "I HAVE NO IDEA WHAT THE HELL IS GOING O-O-ONNNN!!!" in a good way. A guy throws you in a lake and then tosses you some bananas. Also you jump on pigs and throw them and they're evil....yeah.

Yes this!

Bayonetta is by far the best Hack and Slash style game ever. The combat mechanics are so fluid and refined its just insane. Every weapon is fun to use, every boss is insanely epic, every enemy is challenging and fun to fight (except grace and glory, fuck those two). I can't recommend this game enough.
The biggest problem with Bayonetta is that if you play it with anyone else in the room the conversion goes something like:

Them: really? with other people in the room?
you: its not porn!
them: close enough.
you: no way, I play it for the awesome combat.
them: yea, sure *rolleyes*.

I have actually had almost that exact conversation, but the game was actually No More Heroes 2.

OT: The secret World is the best MMO I have ever played and the first one that I have enjoyed enough to put significant hours into, and yet it kinda dropped off the radar the second it launched. That might have had something to do with the fact that it was subscription only, but now that it is Buy2Play like Guild Wars I really hope to see lots of new players, because it certainly deserves more recognition IMO.

Mass Effect 1. How could you finish this game, and then even consider anything in me2 and especially me3 ANY good?
ooooh I might regret this but: It might have something to do with the fact that ME1 had awful side missions that did the "recycle the same 3 dungeons" thing way before DA2, terrible vehicle exploration, "combat" that couldn't decide if it wanted to be pure numbers based RPG combat or an actual skill based shooter and ended up being shit at both parts, brick stupid AI even by seris standards, and an ass-backwards difficuly curve that made the game start challenging and get progressively easier. Don't get me wrong I love ME1 for the story, but as soon as the dialogue stopped my will to keep playing would start to ebb. Also while the overall narrative was week ME2 was still engaging because if focused more on the individual squad mates.

Shadow of Rome.

Suffered from the same fate that Godhand did (both Capcom titles and both fairly close to each other in birth). I just don't understand why it got so little love. It pushed PS2 graphics to near current gen levels, had glorious sound, played smooth and responsive (and if you knew the Onimusha engine, you could jump right in), and most importantly had some of the most magnificent video game violence you could ever ask for with no two fights ever playing out the same. Very replayable as well since you could replay the best parts of the game as you wished. Even the few people I knew who gave it a chance said it was a blast, but again, so few gave it that chance. *SIGH* Which pretty much means I'll never see a sequel...
I actually didn't think I had anything to add to this topic but just seeing this game mentioned here... I've got to second it.

My experience with gaming in general was very very limited before this current generation but Shadow of Rome was just impossible to forget(I actually used to refer to it as "Gladiator: The Game" at the time).
This was beyond addictive and it really gave alot of replay value in being able to replay every gladiatorial event. It was a bloody long game as well and hard won if you able to reach the ending.

Damn... Now I need to find this game again... Not to mention a PS2.

Perhaps it should be on PSN.

Yet another opportunity to bring up my GOAT, Sly 2: Band Of Thieves. I have such love for this game.

I hadn't known another person that knew about this game until I joined The Escapist. Even then, like only 5 of you know it:p

BTW how is Bayo for people that aren't Hack n Slash fans? I recently ordered an import and I'm kinda scared that I won't enjoy it very much.

wait, Kingdom of AmasomethingUnpronouncable actually got bad rewards? everyone i know liked it.

As for games that people uderrated id say Orda II and War and Peace, those were fun games why you hate them so much?

Also strnghold legends (extension to stronghold 2). whenever i mention it everyone claims i must be trolling, but that was genuinely the version of stronghold i liked the best, and im a stronghold fan.

The GOdfather, sure its a gta clone with godfather name put on it, sure the automatic aiming is awful idea (yes im looking at you console people), but the game was bloody fun to play.

Indigo Prophecy. yes i realize that whole game being a series of quicktime events may look annoying for some, but i loved the story.

Postal 2. dont get me started.

Oddly enough I always preferred Sly 3 to 2 when I was kid and now that I've replayed them I dig 2 more.Sly 3 is still great but there is just something about 2 I like more.

OT:I've gushed about enough so I'll keep this short Wild Arms 3, in a series that ends to get overshadowed by other bigger titles, this is the one that deserves not to be passed up. Excellent setting, characters and mechanics. I really wish more JRPGS had WA3's way of dealing with random battles.Plus it has some really good puzzles and is the only game to make me enjoy block puzzles to a degree. Also if someone tells you Wild Arms 4 is better than 3 then it is ok to ignore their opinion for the rest of your life

Rayman Origins man. I mean I haven't played that any other game that plays as smooth since DMC3 (which is also underrated).

The art is fanstastic and the key word is here art.A consistent tream of high art that somehow takes level design and fun along for the ride. Sound design, visual design, level design all compliment each other instead of getting in the way. Aside from all the artsy fartsy stuff, It is FUN. It knows what it wants to be and doesn't cover its good parts with things nobody cares (like story).

Yet it still doesn't recognition the sell-out Mario gets. It is sad to think about, depressive even.

Well I haven't played it but the general impression is that it is hack and slah at its most hardcore and hard as nails. It is like Counter Strike of hack and slash genre. If you aren't a fan of core mchanics, there isn't much else you can enjoy...except for graphics. But it is always good to have an open mind.

Gonna say Ico. A lot of people have at least heard of Shadow of the Colossus but hardly anyone seems to have played or knows about Ico.

Diablo 3

Critically speaking, D3 is rated quite well. Ask the gamers and you'll find an average of 3/10.
I think the amount or rage surrounding this game is a tad unfair.
People bombed the game for online only DRM when they readily accept it for MMO's.
They consider it 'pay-to-win' despite how much the game has evolved since launch.

Diablo 2 took years before it became truly amazing with the synergies patch.
Diablo 3 seems destined to fail in the eyes of gamers no matter what changes take place.

Runners Up: Dragon Age 2 (for similar reasons)and Gladius (a great game that few people played)

If we're talking strictly underrated GoaT, then my pick is The Saboteur. I don't hear anybody talk about it, but it's basically GTA + Assassin's Creed set in Nazi-occupied Paris during WWII where you play as an Irishman. There is nothing not awesome about that, and it's just fun as hell.

Stars! 2. And 1, probably. Not so much underrated as underexposed. But damn, that game knows how to dropkick you in the brain.

Valkyria Chronicles 1/2

Glorious Tactical JRPG with lovely stories, likeable characters and shit tons of fun stuff to do.
Sold so badly that Sega decided not to release the third game in the series.
Though that's probably cause they moved from ps3(Valkyria Chronicles) to psp(Valkyria Chronicles 2)
It's my all time favourite game series.

Imma take this opportunity to push Persona 4 again. You should try it even if you despise other JRPGs, it's just that good. Best mystery story ever told, great characters with actual character arcs, super symbolism, well designed dungeons, a well stocked fridge and the list goes on to #101
I agree with everything except the story, as that was beyond awful. It was unbelievably bland, way too much filler, predictable and the only reason why it took so goddamn long was because everyone in your group gets hit with the retard-stick the moment we return to the main plot. The tearjerker moments were the opposite of subtle, the plot-twists were incredibly predictable and everything about the actual plot just sucked. Aside from the main plot and how it was handled, the game is absolutely awesome. Symbolism wasn't exactly subtle though and done better in P3.
