My pet peeves are cardboard slipcover because they end up getting worn out and lack of any real game manual. What are some of your pet peeves?

I fuckin' hate games in the same series having spines without age labels and spines with labels. My Silent Hill collection will always look crap to me from the side because SH3 has the age rating on, nad it has the R symbol even though none of the other games do. I hate dat shit.

I second this. I miss my Monster Hunter manuals having intersting facts about the game in the sides, and actual useful information. Nowadays all they have is a picture of the controller which is labelled saying 'this is the X button' with a label to the X button etc. Pretty stupid. I don't even bother reading them any more

Oh and games that include maps will always be looked upon happily for me. Skyrim, GTA4, Far Cry 2, even if I don't like the game that makes it much more better in my eyes.

I really miss the days of proper game boxes. Not these plastic DVD-case things, but actual boxes you can put stuff in.

Sadly, the last real box I've seen was the Witcher 2's.

Oh, and the flimsy "Recycle cutout" cases can go die in a fire.

I wouldn't say I have a pet peeve about cases, but it seems like they are bigger than they have to be. What was wrong with a cd case like PS1 games, and save plastic?

I really miss the old game cases with the giant manuals that had like pre-story, back story on all the main characters and races... things like that (first one coming to mind is the old Warcraft III manual, I love that game, it is probably the first game I install on every computer I own).

Those are extremely fragile if dropped from a small height or pressure is applied ever so in certain points and if enough of the plastic grips in the center keeping the disc in place break the disc won't stay in place. Though I'm all for shorter cases again, the harder plastic "book cover" style is better than the PS1 Compact Disc design.

My problem is the crappy way the cases hold the disk. Seriously, It's hard to get disks out of modern cases without knowing how to pick locks of something I've broken 2 disks just trying to get them out of the case.

Personally I never really minded lack of manuals
Especially since most modern games have become really strait forward and self explanatory and the really complicated ones have well maintained wikis that you can go to at any time.

Cases that hold the CD/DVD way too tightly and it feels like the thing's gonna snap in half every time I try to take it out. That really makes me paranoid.

Press the button in the centre.

I've literally never had your problem, however I have occasionally had it so that the button in the centre breaks and therefore the CD itself isn't held securely, which means that the disc can get scratched by rattling round in it's own case.

As has been said: Lack of manuals, I am a firm believer in a good solid manual (indeed when I was younger, part of the fun of a new game was reading through the manual in the drive back from the shops).

This. Opening the case and finding just a single sheet of warranty information is so disappointing.
These days I'm lucky to find even a single sheet of paper instead of a sticker with a CD key.

Oh, I've got a few. Here goes:

No Manuals: mentioned before here. I like manuals, especially when well done. Back in the day they used to be like tour guide pamphlets, pretty much educating you on a lot of aspects of the game before you even started. Hell, when I was a kid my M.O. was to pop open the case and read the manual on the way home. Nowadays? we're lucky to get a piece of paper that looks sort of like a manual, but only really has warranty info and a graphic of the controller that basically says "hold it like this, stupid".

Biggest offenders: Ubisoft, EA,

Shoddy case construction: Before the economy crashed we had a bunch of pretty solid, sturdy cases, which were pretty much solid plastic on both sides. They looked like this:

However, some "environmentally friendly" jackass decided "Hey, instead of investing in a different, more efficient plastic, let's just cut MASSIVE GAPING HOLES in the motherfucking box so that the discs can be crushed and snapped more easily, and dust can more easily damage them. Because that's a brilliant fucking idea." So then, we get shit like this:

I don't care if it's environmentally friendly: it's not friendly to the games they're supposed to be protecting.

Biggest offenders: Ubisoft, Nintendo, Activision, Valve

Bad box art: Now this one's much more subjective, but it still needs to be said. Now I'm not talking about the "americans vs. everyone else" thing, what I'm talking about is genuinely bad examples of box art that do not convey the game's message, regardless of style. Example: Mass Effect 2.

Here's Mass Effect 1's box art:

What does it look like? To me that looks like something from an '80s-era space opera, and while it shows a lot of characters it also shows the bigness of the place it inhabits: MOTHER FUCKING SPACE.

Here's one of the original candidates for ME2's box art.

This was pretty good. While it doesn't outright show the enemy, that's okay, since they're supposed to be something of an unknown. It still shows the bigness of the world, but emphasizes the action in the game moreso than the first one's cover. It's pretty damn well-designed. So why, oh why did we get THIS?:

It shows three characters in the desert, holding guns in what are probably the most boring poses ever conceived by humankind. It doesn't emphasize the bigness and variety of the world, nor does it emphasize the interaction between the characters, all it motherfucking emphasizes is the fact that it's a space-shooter. And because of that, it's a failure in graphic design, and the author should feel bad because their work is bad.

Biggest offenders: Too prevalent in everyone's catalogs to pinpoint.

So there you have it: my gripes with modern game boxes.

If the game manual contains interesting lore and back story about the game, then yes I want it. Otherwise, I'm not going to flip through a manual that's describing the HUD and controls.

The only physical game content I've ever cared about is the game, soundtrack and world map. I don't want an art book, character statue, bobble head, medallion, t-shirt, replica trinket etc etc. I don't even much care about the cover art. I'd be completely content if the game disc was put in a PS3 case without a manual and the game title slapped on a white background on the front.

I'm talking about those cases that have 6 prongs around the circle thing when you press down on it it only depresses 3 of the prongs, then you need a tooth pick or paperclip to pop off 2 of the other prongs so you can take the disk out sideways.

PS2/PS3 game cases work a charm, but the 360 has the 6 pronged cases, or even worse the 1 pronged cases that snap the disk in the whole inner circle then only depress 1/3 of it, then they put the lip over the thumb slot so you can't even get a grip on it.

If you always get the 4 pronged cases or the ones with the little square in the center I envy you, but I am the unluckiest bastard when it comes to taking a disk out of a case.

I know I'll probably get some hate for this, but as we're a good chunk of the way into the digital age...by biggest pet peeve is that the physical medium is still the primary medium. I honestly hate that my game collection over the years takes up such a huge chunk of space. And don't get me started on the sheer horror of everything being lost due to some natural disaster, there's no way in hell I'd be able to save even a small fraction of my collection should something happen (probably wouldn't be anywhere near the top of things that are reasonable to save).
I can't express how much I love the fact that I can boot up one of my various digital platforms and see a library full of hundreds of games that take up no physical space.

I am going to go with the majority and lament the loss of the game manual. I was playing through Final fantasy IX the other day and I found myself reading through the instruction manual, I liked it when the manual had the main cast of characters with a little of their back stories.
