YouTube Claims GTA IV Sirens Are Infringing on Jazz Song

Ever listen to the song "St. Thomas" while cruising around Liberty City? Remember how it sounded exactly like being chased by a horde of police cars? No?

Well, here's a new one for the whole YouTube content ID debacle. According to the video hosting service, if you post a clip containing the police sirens from GTA IV, you're actually guilty of copyright infringement against the jazz group Sonny Rollins Quartet. YouTube user Taltigolt, in talking with Kotaku earlier this week, reported that a video he posted of him going on a police chase through Liberty City was flagged for containing the Sonny Rollins song "St. Thomas" at the 6:32 mark. Problem is, if you go to that part in the video, which can be seen <a href=http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lJEOfG2AkrQ&feature=player_detailpage#t=388>here, all you hear is the wailing of police sirens. And no matter what your thoughts on jazz might be, that's definitely no Sonny Rollins song. Taltigolt provided a screencap to Kotaku of the content ID claim against him, which can be seen at right.

GTA IV fans might remember that "St. Thomas" is actually a song on the game's jazz station, but the fact remains it doesn't show up anywhere in Taltigolt's video. Taltigolt did admit to Kotaku that he acknowledged the copyright claim to YouTube without first checking his video to verify the allegation. It's been a rough week for YouTube users, as the company's recently revamped content policies have seen them cracking down on numerous videos. Some artists have even found themselves accused of <a href=http://www.escapistmagazine.com/news/view/130667-YouTube-Issued-Copyright-Claims-Against-Miracle-of-Sound>stealing their own material. Which sadly is true. There are many other video hosting sites, but none are near the size of YouTube. Twitch is the closest right now, and until something changes and YouTube gets an actual competitor then we'll be screwed because in Google's mind, why should they care about fixing things? They have a monopoly over pretty much the entire internet, and don't have to change anything no matter how f*cked up it gets.

I know this is obviously terrible for all the content creators, but I can't help but get some satisfaction at seeing YouTube fuck itself up more every day.

I think we need to have a daylong boycott or mass email on Youtube. Google may or may not have become the uncaring big boss like Microsoft and other overly large corps. But they better listen unless viewers and uploaders start migrating to other sites. I already know of a couple reviewers that only post short videos linking their reviews (of 10 years old or more movies no less!) to other services like Vimeo or Blip. Youtube will not stay high and mighty if they keep this up. Their competitors will find more revenue to slowly increase their bandwidth to support Youtube's former market share as Youtube hemorrhages more users.

Ok - I'm honestly a tad surprised at that...

I guess I'll have to wait untill someone dishes out the dosh for a lawyer (or maybe even if one of the game publisher like EA got involed) and sues for some kind of... I dunno - misuse of the DMCA? I mean, its clear that in a lot of these cases there is NO legal grounds for pulling these copyright strikes.

Heck, I'd be mildy amused but also reasonably pleased if some US prosecuter sent a stern letter or something to Google/Youtube saying "Do copyright correctly, or... something something - probably fines" I dunno - but I find it grotesque that someone as big as google, as big as youtube, are allowed to seemingly knowingly incorrectly apply copyright.

Ok, one thing is that people can upload copyrighted material to youtube - their previous system, before this tightening of the algorythms, seemed quite good at swatting those if an owner found it and then cried foul. (or if trolls wanted to spam the report system to shut down vids they dont like)

But this... this seems excessive - and as Moviebob pointed out, then its hurting one of the biggest segments of traffic generators that youtube has these days, the lets players (I base this mainly on pewdiepie being the most sub'd channel...)

So it just doesn't make sense. Youtube/google's priorite should be to enable content makers to generate views so google can sell ads - adhering to copyright laws is a secondary priority that, I'm guessing, to them is more annoying than useful, since it prevents a lot of content that'd otherwise generate a lot of traffic for their ads.

What I want to see is someone lighting an effigy in front of YouTube's offices in protest of just how horribly they're handling everything. After calling news stations so they can get word out of what's going on.

People won't move away from a monopoly fast enough. Not enough people REALLY know about it. The general public will continue using it. The only way to stop them at this point is through horrible press through the mass media.

Yes, I seem to recall them saying something about muting the music to prevent music copyright claims. Oh, right... looks like even that won't protect you XD
