When you think Yu-Gi-Oh, you probably think of that cardgame for children, or the hilarious abridged series. But did you know that before Yu-Gi-Oh tried to get everyone to buy their cards, the manga was really badass.

Let me give an example: Yugi and his friends are at a café when a convict busts in and takes Anzu hostage. Yugi then turns into his alter-ego, challenges the convict to a game, and puts him on fire. Oh, and it's not a cardgame he challenges him too, it's a clever game made up on the spot.

That's what I loved about Yu-Gi-Oh, Yugi's alter-ego would always come up with some original and creepy game to play with his enemies, and then punish them horribly. Granted, everyone he met was cartoonishly evil, but it was awesome.

Now it's all about that cardgame. Granted, I love that game and play it whenever I can (don't judge me), but it doesn't implement well in the series.

What do you think about the change in concept in Yu-Gi-Oh? Did you like it when Yugi invented games on the spot or do you like the cardgame?

EDIT: A picture for those of you who want to know how the manga was before the cardgame:

This picture is from chapter 4 in the first volume btw

I always thought Yu-Gi-Oh as a concept was just plain stupid. But I hate most manga.

And the TV series was so utterly bland and padded I never thought to check out the manga. I might now.
Only the earlier volumes though. Up to Pegasus castle there isn't much cardgames.

Even when Kaiba challenges Yugi to a match after defeating his grandpa, Yugi and friends must go through a set of trials, including facing of against a convicted serial murdered in a room filled with gasoline with a single candle lighting the room up.

I never knew that, though I'm not big on manga anyway.

I do know that 4Kids (lead by, yes indeed, Bobby Kotick at the time) horribly mangled the anime, and that before 4Kids torture it was more...rugged, so to speak. Which is, then, more in line with the manga I guess.

I think they sort of re-ordered it around for Irish TV, in such a way that only the bland episodes would be played, the ones where most of the screen time comes from them describing their cards.
The tv-show actually cuts out about 8 volumes of the manga. It shows the first chapter, then the chapter with Kaiba challenging Yugi's grandpa, then Pegasus.

It's not just Irish TV, the show never produced the 8 volumes. Although I've heard that there is a "season 0" with those episodes.

OT: From what I've heard from a friend, the manga sounds really cool, and it involves someone impaling their own hand, telling it to shut up!

Well the original series that you've shown here was what the show was trying to be, since Yu-Gi-Oh means 'king of games', Yugi was supposed to work with all sorts of games, not just cards, but that part of the show really took off so they retooled it into the card game and it spread from there, after that point the Anime was just a once-a-week 30-minute advertisement for new cards.

Not to say that there weren't some amazing duels (the final duel of the original series was amazing in Japanese, but like every episode sucked in English).

Of course when they made 2 spin-offs it went to hell really quickly.

4kids, the most evil company in the world happened.

I'd attempt to start a petition to shut them down but no one would sign it and even if they did some poor children would end up with Spam for Christmas diner.
(I like Spam but it's no turkey.)

Season 0 and the old manga are still awesome though.

I would like to add that there is a scene in the manga where Anzu is being groped by robotic arms while strapped in what is basically a sound activated electric chair. In plain view of all her friends + the creepy old dude controlling the thing.

Yep, wish they had gone on with the original concepts. That was fun. =3

.....Drop the bottle, flick your wrist. What an idiot.

Anyway, if that is the case, then why did the series change focus to a lame card game? Why didn't they just keep doing what they were doing?

Wow, I never even new that that existed.

Still, I'm not going to bother, seeing as anime is not my cup of tea

My childhood was a lie.

The manga sounds pretty freaking awesome. Where 4kids came up with the card game is beyond me.
