Zelda: Hyrule Warriors Set to Release on Wii U in August

Zelda: Hyrule Warriors, the Dynasty Warriors-inspired Zelda hack and slash, hits Japanese stores on August 14.

Earlier in the year, Nintendo unveiled a new Zelda title for the Wii U [http://www.escapistmagazine.com/news/view/130653-Hyrule-Warriors-Is-a-Dynasty-Warriors-Styled-Zelda]: Zelda: Hyrule Warriors. Granted, it may have not been the Zelda main series entry fans were hoping for, but it still looked like a fun little Dynasty Warriors-style spin-off. At the time, we were told that it would release some time in 2014, and now, it looks like it has an official release date (at least for Japan). Hyrule Warriors will launch exclusively for the Wii U on August 14.

Despite its impending release date, details on the game are actually pretty sparse. We know only what we've seen in the original reveal trailer, as well as the fact that it will be developed by Tecmo Koei - the team behind the Dynasty Warriors series.

The August 14 date was also specifically for the Japanese version of the game, but given that this game was revealed in English during a Nintendo direct, we can assume that an English port is indeed in the works. Hopefully, it will still arrive before the end of the year.

This game should tie over Zelda fans until Nintendo develops the real sequel they have been waiting for. It also looks sort of neat.

Not very excited about this. Every franchise in japan has a dynasty warriors knock off so a zelda skinned one doesn't sound too interesting.

Been quite some time since I had a good just hack and slash game, hoping this one is at least mediocre so I can just sit, and destroy loads of monsters :D
I'm not too demanding...

After playing Dark Souls where nearly every enemy could tear me apart, something like this might be a nice change of pace.

I don't see myself paying full price for it though.

Ah, the age old question: why doesn't the villain just send all of his forces to attack the hero at once?

In Dynasty warriors they pretty much do that, the results can only be called massacres.

I've never played a Dynasty Warriors game, but I'm actually looking forward to this. Which is strange because not much gets me excited anymore.

I've always wanted to try a game like this, I guess making a Zelda version was enough to finally get me to try it. I don't expect it to be amazing, but since Eiji Aonuma was supervising the development, I'm sure it may have a bit of a Zelda feel.

It also helps that there are going to be multiple playable characters, it will be fun to see who we can play as.

Like everyone else here, I'm pretty excited for this, it looks really fun. I've never played a Dynasty Warriors game before, but this looks like a good as any game to start with.

You should go for it. It's pretty cheap compared to the other consoles, it's just about $300.

But will it be multiplayer? Mowing down entire armies of mooks is fun, but mowing down entire armies of mooks with a friend in a bid to see who can mow down the most mooks is better!

It is confirmed to have multiplayer. Here is an article talking about some more of the features and story elements.

and of course we have the requisite screenshots:

And Famitsu scans:

Looking to be interesting; with Impa being a definite playable, I wonder who else will join. So far the story has to do with the (ridiculously sexual) black witch Shia and her underlings Varuga and Wizro. Apparently Shia is a mage who was meant to maintain the balance of the Triforce...and dark forces have possessed and made her go wacky. Oh, and apparently how she got possessed was because she was in love with Link. So, yeah, the plot is actually kicked off due to a love triangle.
