It sounds like a good game but I think I'll stick with the Ace combat series.

PS: good review. *woot*

I'm suprised he enjoyed it, it being a flying game with someone's name on it..Doesn't really seem like something Yahtzee would be in to

It was still funn though, especially the bit about the PMC attacking America, he does have a good point.

But just to let you all know, there's no PMC weapons on the moon. There is, however, my stock pile of nuculear death rays!

Ahaha. "What would they do after killing the President? Declare themselves King?" Oh and hiding all the weapons and soldiers to attack the US is on the moon? Makes sense since y'know they don't send actual humans to space anymore. We would've totally got our asses handed to us if that was the case.

I got a few laughs in. Funny review.

I agree with Yahtzee, the game is fun. Sure it's immensely flawed, but you can skip all the cutscenes and shoot people out of the sky at mach 2 with missiles. And that is why I'll always love flight games.

A good review, but I'm waiting for a game that is embarrassingly bad, so it becomes funny again.

That or Duke Nukem, that would also be funny.

Not a bad review, ZP does seem to be getting better as of late (Or maybe that's just me).

I did enjoy the "Wearing funny hats!" bit, but (minus the funny hats) wasn't disgruntled insects from the earth's core the plot to gears of war 2?

(And on a different note) I found the "fans" rant funny the first ten times, but am I the only one that's starting to find it getting old? I know it's a good way to sell t-shirts, but still...

The thing I don't like about H.A.W.X is that it stands for High Altitiude Warfare eXperimental squadron. As acronyms go, that's pretty lame.

A Tom Clancy game in Zero Punctuation? At last!

Two reviews in the last 3 weeks have seen Frontier: Elite II make a cameo appearance. Is another retrospective in the works?

Now if you'll excuse me, I need to go salute my flag some more before I get shot or somebody sets it on fire.

Press X to make the world safe for democracy---now that's a good new twist on an old joke.

Also, the Webby Awards are a complete and utter joke [http://www.slate.com/id/2216250/] with about as much credibility as if I ran a blog, created a banner, and gave it to the Escapist (or any other website) so they could call themselves "Some Guy With a Blog's Website of the Fucking Year." So no, annoying ad, I won't visit that worthless site and waste my time voting. I'm too busy wasting my time ranting about it in a post that nobody will read because it'll be buried under OVER NINE THOUSAND more comments in the space of about five minutes.

I'm sure that absolutely no one is at all interested, but "Tom Clancy's" is actually a brand name, so no, Tom Clancy does not write every single book and game and movie that comes out with his name on it. The reason why is kind of convoluted but amounts to that at the time he wanted to get his first book published no one really knew what a hard technothriller was and he couldn't really find a publisher, so he ended up publishing with a military press and part of the contract included rights to his name for some reason.

I was surprised about H.A.W.X, it seemed from the trailers to be air combat lite, and yet Yahtzee seemed to like it. That whole plot madness section was amusing too, "INSECT PEOPLE RULE!" ;)

Haha, "I've seen light switches with more tactical fexibility!", so true indeed.
Great review, and comes close to what i was thinking about the game. The flying is extremely fun, and of course they needed to cut down realism to a somewhat playable level. I just wish the game's difficulty would have been defined by more tactical options instead of just throwing in masses and masses of enemy aircraft and vehicles to shoot down.

As soon as I saw this was the game he was reviewing, my first thought was "Whoopie. We get to hear about how much Yahtzee hates American Imperialism again. Joy." Turns out I was right. But I was grateful that he took some time out from bashing the American Military Industrial Complex and American nationalism to actually REVIEW THE FUCKING GAME.

And having heard that, I was very glad that he was actually able to enjoy a game where you fly around in jets and blow shit up. Astonishing how that works.

Please, Yahtzee, do all of us in America a favor and stop reviewing games that involve American international relations, or at least stop editorializing on their politics. We know the rest of the world hates us, and we're tired of hearing about it. It's not amusing or comical when you rant against America anymore. It's just as vitriolic and bile-stained as your mom after her weekly two girls one cup reenactment.

I actually watched my friend play this for 1-2 hour so the spoilers weren't spoilers for me, yay!
Overall it looked slightly complicated... and even if it's simple I was never a good flyer-gamer (Still haven't beaten GTA:SA because I can't get past flight school).
Overall, this game is -not- for me.

Great review again mr. Yahtzee.

I was silently hoping you would review another Wii game again, so we would all have the great pleasure of watching the Nintendo Crusaders throw themselves selflessly into the mote of the Yahtzee castle!

I am only a recent "viewer" of your reviews, but I love them very much!

It's good to know the sewage floodgate that is the current games industry still has a nemesis that simply wants quality.

Agreed... your point? Oh, I get it. So I have to love Rush Limbaugh to get tired of having the same "we hate America" joke run over and over. Good point, and quite an excellent straw man you've constructed, sir.

Tom Clancy never wrote a video game! EvER!
Ubisoft purchased his name for 5 fuckin millions of euros! Don't believe?! http://ve3d.ign.com/articles/news/37625/Ubisoft-Purchase-Tom-Clancys-Name
So I expect next Tom Clancy game to be about some guy like Jack Ryan to fight world economic crisis, jut to find out it was a plan of the communist in... Let's say... Ukrain. Meanwhile they reap off 24h, Burn Notice (just see Splinter Cell ConViciotn) and Behind Enemy Lines.

Good review, but as Yahtzee said he doesn't play these types of games so there's nothing for him to compare it to. So if any of you have played both Ace Combat 6 and HAWX, and taking into account I already own Ace Combat, is HAWX worth my time? Is Ace Combat better? Is HAWX better? Or do they both have a unique charm and I should give HAWX a spin?

I Have both ac6 and Hawx. The missions in Hawx gets kinda boring - protect a plane or protect some ships about 80% of the time. I would rent it first, cause the only thing i like about Hawx was the assist-off flight mode, which got me a little sick at first and only got it about 20 minutes later after getting shot down a half dozen time by the training drones.

I personnaly like ace combat 5 more than any of these games, but hawkx and AC6 are sort of similar in terms of how good they are in what they do. But they feel quite different(to me at least). Hwk is more...intense? i guess is the word. I recommend it, it's a good game in general.

I had never actually laughed out loud at anything in ZP's reviews before, even though he is quite witty and I love his Australian/British (is there really that much of a difference?) accent.

But that image of Uncle Sam going "D: OI" just got to me.

Good show, ZP. Good show indeed.

Also to the guy that said Americans didn't find this funny: I live in California.

As was Far Cry 2 and Fear 2, but I mean he hasn't reviewed a pure PC game or a PC version of a PC + Console released game. Also I'm not counting the Thief review because that was a retrospective one. I'm talking about modern releases.

Clancy probably doesn't write any games but the plot sure sounds like one of his: the villains are foiled by doing something completely idiotic that makes absolutely no sense.

What does a PMC possibly gain by declaring open warfare against the government of their most lucrative employer!? How does that make more sense than just paying off the elected officials you need to promote the laws and policies you want?

The Hunt for Red October was a good book that was made into a good movie, but since then, Clancy's novels have gotten progressively bad. Especially since the end of the Cold War.

What does making a review that is a carbon copy of someone else's work have to do with taking his game advice seriously?

I actually agree. Why would you ever take any of these reviews to heart? They're hilarious and fun to watch. But, just as Yahtzee pointed out in this very video, if it's not funny, it's not worth mentioning in his review.

Although I have no idea if he has good or bad tastes. That's irrelevant.

Aah I've been looking for someone that comments on the spoilers !!

I didn't have soylent green and crying game, somebody said there was a gears of war reference in there, I thought it was maybe 'girl has a penis'.

Great review, HAWX looks promising, HAWX 2 will surely be awesome.

Awww. I wish he had gone "Tom Clancy's Tom Clancy's H.A.W.X by Tom Clancy."

Like in the Jericho review. That would have cracked me up so bad.

Still awesome though, as I said before.

Agreed... your point? Oh, I get it. So I have to love Rush Limbaugh to get tired of having the same "we hate America" joke run over and over. Good point, and quite an excellent straw man you've constructed, sir.

I voted for Kerry and Obama. I still love my country.
My point was actually that unlike the arguments of either Rush or Yahtzee (or, for that matter, you or I), the sides in the argument are rather fair and balanced.

For the record, I voted the same way you did, and trying to point out that the ultra-pro and semi-anti America voices doesn't mean I suddenly hate America. At least we can say these things without getting dragged into the street and shot. In most places.

"This isn't just idle fact, this is cold, hard speculation!"

Good review, though I don't see why everyone seems to think we Americans are begging for glories past. Sometimes a story calls for an huge epic war, and any huge war in this day and age would probably involve America. Unless you'd rather they just set it in WWII again?

I didn't accuse you of hating America.

I wasn't even substantially accusing Yahtzee.

My only point is that whenever my favorite video game reviewer covers a military-based game set in a time period some time between 1700 and 2500, I've started to roll my eyes even before he starts because I know that at least 40% of the review is going to be devoted to what a bunch of flag-waving, fat, uneducated, walking erections he thinks Americans are. I'm never disappointed.

He had some valid points at first (I believe he first went on this tangent around the time MOH: death by parachutes or whatever the hell it was called and COD 4 came out), but it's getting repetitive and old to the point of being mean-spirited piling-on now.

It's gotten to where that it seems like he's reviewing a lot of these games (Army of Two? WTF?) just for the opportunity to talk about America, and venturing off into this territory while reviewing some games for which the side-trip seems inappropriate (Prince of Persia? Perhaps my geography is a bit off, but isn't Montreal in Canada?).

All in all, I was a little irritated, and I thought I'd use the opportunity to voice my mild frustration while simultaneously making a scatological funny about his mom. Thanks for taking the piss out of me and diverting the conversation. At least I was talking about the content of the review when I made my original post.

This was a pretty good review, and quite funny, and I liked the "everyone knows it already" spoilers at the end (but c'mon, nothing about Darth Vader being Luke's father? Or maybe that one is too easy to do...)

The plot of the game, at least as Yahtzee described it (the private military contractors attacking the United States) seemed fairly reminiscent of the newest season of 24...

I've never seen the appeal of H.A.W.X. Not to be offensive, but I just saw it as a game for the sort of person *cough* American *cough* who is far too proud of their army for going into a peaceful country (or a country that is in a feud that has nothing to do with America) and then back handing everyone they see that isn't American or in the UN.
But yeah, I think the whole... Giant Jet plane dog fight thing... It wouldn't work unless the fights were completely linear as in, they were going straight forward... because those sort of things aren't known for being super easy to maneuver over a short space and stuff....

I too am surprised Yahtzee enjoyed it....but hey its one of the better flying games out there...Warhawk was awesome minus it was unrealistic as fuck (but then again so was everything about that game) and the game play was fucked up the ass, HAWX does what it does right, and for that I commend it!

I really enjoyed HAWX. It was the best excuse since Freespace 2 and maybe one of the Rogue Squadron sequels to jump into something large and pointy and fly and shoot at shit. The story was enough to drive the thing at least, however unplausible one might consider it. Perhaps this positive review from the Yahtz will drive more people to pick up this game, like they did Painkiller, cos Gaud knows it deserves some bloody praise.

I don't know if Yahtzee knew it or not, but he just refferenced Gears of War at the end. Because anyone who knows a damn about the Locust knows that they aren't a bunch of aliens, they are disgruntled insect people from the core of the Earth. That's Epic's definition of them anyways, and considering they made the Locust I am inclined to agree with them.

I'm not entirely sold on H.A.W.X. being worth my time. The only flight combat game I have any experience with is MIG-29 Fighter Pilot back on the Sega Genesis (and in retrospect I have no clue how I came about getting it or why it was cool to me to begin with) aand I was never any good at it. Flight sims aren't my thing, so I'm gonna remain skeptical about this one.

But good review. It's interesting to see a game that has been getting mediocre and mild reviews get something positive from Yahtzee. Well, aside from the crazy story. I wonder if Ace Combat will be next. There's a lot of them.

Me thinks it's all across the board. Tried to pull up an old review and that one had issues to. Just a hiccup, I'm sure.
Regardless, it's great to see Yahtzee expanding his genres, even if the game breaks down the complexities of flight to a mere playskool version of actual aviation.

Well as far as the silly hatted mantis people are concerned the game's lack of realism when it comes to how many baddies you end up facing is excusable because, especially with air combat, reality isn't all that much fun. Better to just go off the walls in your ficticous virtual medium and fill the skies with as many things to shoot as possible to give the player the best time he/she/it can possibly have.

Perhaps they could have created a setting that was a bit more believable but ultimately it doesn't matter so long as you get to blow stuff up and enjoy yourself in the process.

We do love Americans, though! Without you guys there would be nobody to compare ourselves with when we feel bad. Just kidding, not all Americans are bad, but your foreign policy advisors are all out to lunch, it seems.

As for the review; as always, funny. I don't understand how people have trouble understanding Yahtzee, as his enunciation is fine and clear (though I may be used to Aussies speaking quickly due to living with them). Gotta say, I enjoy that he points out both the good and the bad evenly so that you can form your own opinion.

Great review, top to bottom. I've denounced the Clancy games, save for the occasional Splinter Cell playthrough whenever I've grown tired of Thief and MGS. I still might check this one out, though, since the Ace Combat series defected to the 360.

In any case, I didn't enjoy the demo for HAWX, and wrote an ill advised rant-poll here on Escapist... of which I'm extremely embarrassed about, now that I think about it.

Anyhow, I probably didn't enjoy it cause I'm a flight simulation purist - every flight simulator MUST be played with a joystick!

I loved all the little spoilers at the end, although I would have been beyond mad if he had done that before I finished watching The Usual Suspects.

I've been hearing a lot of generally positive reviews for Hawx from multiple sources, so maybe it's a good game. It's also possible that Yahtzee's relative inexperience with the genre has caused him to overrate the game. We all tend to think in our first significant foray into a new genre that the game we're playing is better than it really is. I'm guilty of this myself, because I think Project Snowblind is awesome (and it was the first FPS I'd played since the days of Perfect Dark, and it got me back into the genre.)

Leave it, its a fanboy, you get so many sheep in the comments section that simply take yahtzee's word as gospel.

I like yahtzee and I love his reviews but I can see that this one simply wasnt that funny, not as funny as his earlier ones in fact the new batch as been lacking the lauths, but as ive said already in another comment, there really hasnt been that many games to make fun off in a while, the problem is that we only really like it when he's making fun of the games, there alot less funny when he praises them.

"the girl has a willy", is a reference to The Crying Game, a brilliant film where its revealed at one point that the beautiful female love interest is in fact a guy, the main character still sleeps with him/her later though.

A good review I though. I loved the rife on the Americans silly overblown war games.

That was simply not funny in the slightest.
I guess we will all have to go watch your exremely popular and award winning videos. Oh yeah, you don't have any. Where in the hell do all of you insulting dumbasses come up with the idea that just because you have rights to free speech that you're smart enough to utilize them? For that matter, who the hell wants to read shit like that. Ooh, you have an opinion. Big damn deal. You are only showing an amount of ignorance by stating anything of the like. I'm not sure you are an idiot, but by this post the only reasonable conclusion on my part is that you are one. No hard feelings, but just keep your stupidity to yourself and quit pissing me off!
One. How is being good at something a requirement to critize others work on it? Its not.
Two. Your post is full of insults and swears and you accuse my post of being full of shit. Ha
Three. I'm anything but an idiot and judging by the maturity of your post I am far older and more intellligent than you.
Finally. If my post pisses you off that much then do not read it. Its that simple.

Oh and that noise you're hearing right now is the sound of you getting served.

But its fun to crush them in an argument.

NOOOOO, Yahtzee just ruined all of those movies for me. Or he would have if I hadn't seen them all. Except for the crying game, that movie just sounds weird.

Heheh, funny as always, Yahtzee.

I especially liked the spoiler quotes at the end :] "Rosebud was the sled" got me good :]

I have to say the animations on this was the worst ever. Was nothing but 100% copy off what he was talking about. Usually it's more clever. Did someone else do them instead? If so get the other guy back!

Ok. That's all the reason I needed to not give a crap about this game. Flight sims and I have never really gotten along.

ace combat 04 owns every single light simulator game before or since. he should play that, i'm sure he could still find something to be pissed off at despite it being an amazing game ;)

"Hey Yahtzee, every tried the Ace Combat series?

It's essentially H.A.W.K.S with less generic planes...

...and more arsepulling storyline."

And superweapons. Can't forget those.

Does H.A.W.X also make you fly through a tunnel at the end too?

hey now, H.A.W.X like so many american games tend to stick too much in reality, but then again, realism is not that bad when the medium used is not being exploited like a bunch of rabbits trying to expand the family.

HAWX is a one of a kind game. At least give Ubi some credit for giving us civvies a decent game that doesn't involve hitting 20-30 random switch before taking off etc ... etc ...

Yahtzee likes air combat games? Well color me surprised.

Still, very good review. Not necessarily a game I would have looked at, but now it at least deserves a rental.

Ilike how the end of this review obviously referenced Gears of War at the end with the joke about timing. It took me back to the Phantom Hourglass review where he was suggesting a way for Nintendo to make better games and his description was just Okami, which is just a much better Zelda-type game. The part about America looking for another WWII like situation was funny, but he already did something very similar in...The Medal of Honor: Airborne review, I think.

Overall this was a good review but the laughs seemed a bit recycled. Also, I don't understand how he could spend so much time in the beginning of the review ranting about the simplicity and poor gameplay in the game and then at the end he just randomly says he likes it. Honestly I'm starting to seriously doubt if Yahtzee's opinion means anything at all.

A good one by Yahtzee I think; how bravely he endures another dose of bile-inducing patriotism.

Perhaps if you are shot down in H.A.W.X, as you plummet to the earth there should be the message of "press x to invoke special patriotism recovery". Gritting his teeth the pilot ejects adhesive American flags to cover up the holes and flaming fuselage, before letting out a pure masculine roar, pulling on the stick, and just narrowly saving himself from certain death.

This should be followed by a few minutes of the pilot humming the American national anthem while dog-fighting. He is invincible while doing so.

Auto-target?

"Attack" and "Defend"?

Sounds like bullshit. Try the Ace Combat series for good semi-realistic jet fighter games.

Warning: It's Japanese, so while there won't be any patriotism, there will be whining.

it's so hard to tell without a rating system how much he likes/dislikes the games he rants about...it's hardly fair to call yahtzee's work "a review"...it is great though...always makes me laugh...i just wish he would say more often how much he liked or disliked the game in comparison to other recent titles

Even though in one of his episodes he does say that ratings are crap and that you can't display an opinion in numbers or something to that affect.

For all my fanboy love for Ace Combat, I'll admit that's the best description I've ever read of it.

I didn't really like H.A.W.X all that much. I find that all the Ace Combat games rule this genre.

The thing I don't like about H.A.W.X is that it stands for High Altitiude Warfare eXperimental squadron. As acronyms go, that's pretty lame.
So HAWE would be more accurate, most likely pronounced as "whore".

Says everything I think.

Oh man, autopiloting to Halls of the Mountain King, now that really takes me back.

I'm not surprised Yahtzee liked HAWX. I saw a video of the gameplay and realized that it was a pretty fun game on first blush. It doesn't take itself too seriously, and that's good from a gameplay perspective (something that, if Derick Smart ever figured out, he'd become an international game design superstar overnight).

Good question, as H.A.W.X. has got more attention because of the Tom Clancy label.

HAWX does not compare to AC6 but it's not bad at all. The off-assist mode is an intriguing aspect. Also the controls are proper pitch, roll and yaw, which is a relief, as "novice" controls like those in Crimson Sky etc. drive me up the wall. (Make sure you switch them on in settings i.e. "expert"). So give it a go.

Having said that, in no way is HAWX the equal of AC6 in terms of graphics (plane models and landscape), handling (HAWX's is just not as realistic or responsive), music, sounds, story, playback theatre and especially re-playability. Trying to maximise your points in the vast AC6 missions requires careful planning, esp. on the harder modes, and e.g. "oh, the joy of discovering carpet bombing and the Air-Fuel Bomb" haha.

But yes, HAWX does have it's unique charm, it's defiantly worth playing. And it's great that it's managed to get more people into the fun of air-combat e.g. Yahtzee himself.

Btw, I can't agree with the dude who says that AC5 is better than AC6, I've played all the Ace Combat series and six is at least as good or even better. Now, if they would only do a sequel to Dropship... that would be fantastic.
