A League of Legends fan project called Chronoshift, which was intended to be an unofficial recreation of the game from earlier in its lifespan - similar to World of Warcraft: Classic - has been forced to shut down.
Now, this isn't particularly noteworthy, because fan projects based on existing IPs - particularly those that reuse official assets and code - get shut down all of the time.
What really makes this one unique, is how Riot initially approached the developers.
This has attracted some rather deserved criticism, and, well - memes
Following this conversation, Riot did issue a formal cease and desist letter via their lawyers. Saying "Our stance on projects such as Chronoshift is also explicitly called out in section 3 of our legal guidelines. We understand the Chronoshift team is disappointed, but they shouldn’t be surprised by our request.".
They also verified that the Discord chat with zed was legitimate, and that they were "disappointed with the tenor of the conversation", and "we'll be addressing this internally".
Oh Riot.
