Sounds like RE4 Remake is a thing, along with RE8: Village

Seems logical, as it’s their most successful, critically acclaimed game in the series. The only way I could see checking checking this one out personally though would be if I had nothing else worth playing first. I’m actually more curious about how they expand on RE7 with the sequel.

I don't see the point in a RE4 remake, honestly. The game isn't that old, the graphics still hold up, and it's not like they are gonna be diverging from the core gameplay like they did with the last two Remakes.

Unless they remake it into a tank control game. I'll be laughing for hours if that were the case, even if it's not going to be.

If they were gonna remake another old RE game, why not Code Veronica? If only to continue the trend of taking a tank control game and making it into a third-person over-the-shoulder-camera game. It's a pretty good game too.

So it begins. We will probably get RE8 first, before RE4Remake. They can stop with the remake train at this point. I like RE4, but there is not much point in remaking that one. It's not even my favorite RE title. And honestly, certain fans and critics go way overboard on the praising. Yes, RE4 was a major game changer and started a whole new genre of 3rd person shooters. I was there when it happened. But it started a lot of trends that got worse over the years. It's not the game's fault, but I felt the need to point it out.

Okay, Capcom, just level with me: How many goats do I have to sacrifice to get a remake of Dino Crisis?
Let me know, and I'll bring a few to the ritual for myself. I'll throw in some oxen if it also means we can get a new Onimusha.

Yea, I don't see a point in RE4 getting remade at this point. Please, please put the brakes on it, or...HEY, MAYBE let the RE staff work on another horror title? Fresh start? Maybe?

Nought wrong with giving an already good game a fresh lick of paint and a mix up. Nintendo did it with OoT, plus I mostly remember the last section of RE4 being a bit of a dullen drab time tbh. Also I agree with voiced Dino Crisis consensus, probably not enough guaranteed fan-bux for that return investment though. Let's ride this remake train all the way to its logical conclusion! ...RE6! It must be done! (And maybe 7 with better designed goons?) I'm long past caring about sacredity, it's all nonsense. Just feels like more unnecessary baggage. And we're all going to die from our own stubborn stupidity anyway. It'll all be gone.

Slight correction: I'd actually be perfectly fine with a REMASTERED RE4. Give it some more gloss and features, maybe throw us some extra Mercenaries, and I'd be fine with that.

The point is that they've made a boatload of cash on REmakes 2 and 3 and expect to do so again on 4. Especially since it's one of the most popular Resident Evil games ever made.

Yeah I mean that's an unfortunate reality, but publishers are always going to do something because they expect it to earn them money, so there's not a whole lot to discuss there. But I think what we can say as players is that we're not especially psyched since we don't see what a Remake of 4 will add. That's a small sample size, so possibly we're in a minority, and the R4MAKE (I bet this is how they will spell it) will sell like gangbusters.

The one thing I wouldn't mind from a R4MAKE is an improvement of the controls, which were always a bit stiff. However, the controls in an action shooter are also intimately tied to how a game is designed and balanced, so if they change this to control more like the 2 and 3 Remakes, they'll have to change a lot of other things besides. If they managed to do this well, and remove most of the QTEs...yeah, I'd probably play a remake of 4, even if the idea of it doesn't particularly excite me.

Half the fun of that game was the wackiness of the characters, and seeing the more realistic and grounded characterization of the last two remakes.. Yeah, this is gonna suck. Also, 100 bucks says Ashley is going to get mechanically gutted in favour of an A.I. companion who pretty much can't be harmed or grabbed by the enemy. And I know a lot of people think Ashley sucks to babysit, but those people don't know what the hell they're talking about.

The thing about her besides the awkward eye candy factor of “you’re-out-of-my-league-and-too-young-for-me-anyways”, she was about as “fun” as taking care of Eileen from Silent Hill 4. However, the latter ultimately had the gameplay advantage of taking some planning and strategy to keep her healthy, which also affected the ending.

It took three separate tries and considerable consternation over the course of about a decade, but I ultimately buckled down, put my game face on and got the “good” ending with her by the skin of my teeth, and it was pretty exhilarating. A reward I didn’t/couldn’t attribute to my time with Ashley. I’m sure she’ll have an even bigger/more awkward eye candy factor in the Remake though, considering I’ll be old enough to be her dad.

Why would they stop? The past two have sold like hot cakes and been super popular. Seems silly to not do the most popular game in the franchise.

Ashley is the most robust A.I. companion any game has probably ever had. She's not a non-entity; she can get hurt and killed, even by the player. But the closeness with which she sticks by you means the game never screws you over by having her do something stupid. Her huddling behind you and pivoting along with you as soon as you have your gun drawn is so neat and handy it's genuis. Not only does it put her out of harms way, it also makes narrative sense. The game never makes you feel unsure of her as a mechanic, because it's so simple and well implemented. Yet it adds a lot to the tension, because Ashley is an extention of the player. So the more you mess up the harder it's going to hit due to Ashley's presence.

Speaking of our RE4 style shooters; where is my Evil Within 3? I know Tango games are working on a different project right now, but it'll be nice to know about ew3.

Good points. It’s been over a decade since I played it so I might’ve thrown more shade than it deserves. I just dislike escort missions in general because they usually impede the player’s progress or exacerbate issues when they’re struggling with something.

I was really impressed with how Santa Monica Studio handled Atreus in God of War. They might’ve taken cues from RE4 as well as TLoU, but I think they took it to another level as far as “wow”, this kid is no problem at all. Well, except when he gets grabbed occasionally, but he can’t be completely self-sufficient as that would be too unrealistic.

Pretty much this, I don't get the point of the remake. I'm guessing the remasters/ports have already fixed the fact that in the original, you aimed with the left stick instead of the right stick (which at the time wasn't awkward but would be extremely awkward now).

---

I wonder if the remake is going to keep the dynamic difficulty of the original.

If we're talking companion characters, I'd say Atreus is the best of three. Ellie is usually in almost no harm, yet I was not the most invested. Most of LoUs I held no interests in as it was just another zombie apoclypse with not much difference, but near constant misery. Ashley is mostly compentent in staying out of harms way, but there are annoying sections where her weaknesses take the front and center. The water room being the biggest example. Plus, I never found her interesting even back then. No one missed her when Capcom decided not to bring Ashley back. Atreus actually assists in a natural way, and as you power up Kratos (again), Atreus get better too. At first he only aims arrows, but as soon as you upgrade him too; mah boi start doing grapples, kick flips, and able to launch monster in the air for a juggle combo. Or the old one, two, jump off daddy's shoulder to aim your arrow at the next target. But you have to know when to work with Atreus and cannot happlessly spam arrows. He has a recharge mechanic, he can temporarily get knocked down or grabbed, and there are some sections in the game where you will feel a little naked without him as he is out of commission.

The problem though with Atreus, or Ellie From The Last of Us, along with nearly every A.I. companion from the last two generations is that their purpose is more a narrative one than a gameplay one. They hardly have that sense of mechanical interaction you had with characters like Yorda from Ico, Agro from Shadow of the Colossus, or Ashley from RE4. Developers now kinda want to have their cake and eat it; they want the player to have a companion, but they don't really want to do much with them other than have them talk to the player. Atreus shoots arrows, sure, but they could've easily made it so Kratos had a shoulder-mounted crossbow or some other magic that served the same purpose. There's just little if any gameplay interaction between Kratos and Arteus. And that interaction doesn't need to be Arteus being more vulnerable and needing protection; Agro in SotC couldn't be killed at all, but that horse still has a real physical and mechanical presence in the game. They could've had Atreus serve as a combo extender, like how he sometimes jumps off of Kratos' back to fire an arrow, but make it an actual mechanic that I can input, and have different moves for combos; have Kratos and Atreus' skills link up as you acquire new combat abilities for them both. This would give Atreus a more concrete sense of belonging besides just shooting arrows. Same with Ellie. It might sound silly, but the throw mechanic could've been used to do something as simple as playing catch with her when you're just chilling outside of combat scenarios.

I like both those two characters, I just wish they would've had an actual impact on the gameplay.

Returning to Resident Evil, in RE2 Remake they also cut out any gameplay interaction Claire had with Sherry, or Leon had with Ada. Now, in the original there was little to speak of, but you still had sections where they were with you as you had to deal with enemies, and they could get killed. These sections weren't very good, but they still gave you a sense of 'Oh shit, I'm actual kinda responsable for this kid' in regards to Claire, or 'Hey look, she's actually helping me shoot some zombies' in regards to Leon. And they could've done something similar in the remake, but they didn't, when this would've giving a stronger impression of these characters being with one another besides cutscenes and dialoge.

And with this being the current mindset among developers, I feel a huge part of Resident Evil 4 (when remade) will just get nixed.

Atreus is good for combo aspects, but yeah there could’ve been more meaningful stuff there. Perhaps the sequel will expand on his significance in gameplay as well as story.
