News from the Escapist: https://www.escapistmagazine.com/v2/amazon-buys-mgm-including-james-bond-for-8-45-billion/

Makes me think a number of things.

Streaming services are now buying up legit Hollywood studios? We're seeing a huge power shift in the entertainment industry.

$8-9 bil. may be peanuts to Amazon. Still, that is a heck of a lot of money for a traditional movie studio during this power shift.

Did they pay way too much mistakenly thinking this a good buy? Or are they just eliminating competition?

Your thoughts?

Wait, MGM is still around? I thought they'd gone chapter 11 bankrupt.

They're doing the next James Bond. Might already be in the can. I wonder if it will be on Prime day 1 ?

My kneejerk response to this is that I'm probably going to lose all the James Bond movies from Stan and that bugs me. On the other hand I own most of the ones i like so its an inconvenience at best so........don't know where I stand on this decision.

Its super weird how so much of the entertainment industry is just slowly being absorbed by a small handful of mega-companies.

One day, everything will either be owned by Amazon or Disney.

A concern. A hope is that the whole concept of film making is being democratized. Make a movie using your IPhone and throw it up on the web somewhere. I think there is an independent film maker series called "Dust" found on youtube. "Tangerine" was on Amazon. Made by a guy with five Iphone 5s.

That fact makes me wonder if Amazon paid way too much.

There are likely to be limits here, because part of film is often the spectacle of it, and that is all too often going to require resources well beyond a basic camera.

But YouTube (amongst others) has long been supporting all sorts of interesting stuff - arguably we've already been at the point anyone can get something out there into public attention.
