I wasn't, she's a she. I think it's the people asking for the changes that are worked up about it.
You literally said in the story that their pronoun was they, not she.

Also, I'm 100% certain that story didn't happen as it was described.

Key point of the info being they generally joined willingly or unwillingly as time went on and due to general travel / migration at the time you can assume they are likely a very small number.

Uhhh... and you think it's "woke" to... have someone portray a character from that number? Even though they literally existed?

Why is simply portraying a minority now "woke"?

No it woke to

1) Gender flip a historical male character
2) Then race change him too.

It's also quite woke to go out of your way to focus on such groups and make sure they're included and represented in the main cast when they were probably like 0.5% or less of the population.

The way people like dwarven see it, any job that a person of color and/or queer person gets is a job that a cis-het white man doesn't get.

Was the Last Samurai woke too?

More for woke world

Mayor Lightfoot of Chicago blaming stores for not laying on enough security and not the scale backs and defunding of police for the smash and grab raid that keep happening.

So yeh it's down to Paul Blart mall cop basically to capture and detain the people until police show up to take them apparently.

But apparently according to AOC it's all fake news and not happening, don't believe the footage you see with your own eyes, believe her.

That was conclusively based somewhat on real events and real people though.
Specifically a real Frenchmen. Not a real American. And then he got nationality swapped.

America played third fiddle in the regard of training the Japanese army. Well behind the British and the French.

No.

The way people like you think is pretty well documented though

Prove me wrong. Also, I don't give 2 holy fucks about James Bond. Yes, yes, we all know how oppressed you are because non-white actors sometimes get work, but maybe get the fuck over it. If it's the worst thing to happen to you, you lead a charmed fucking life.

There actually were black Vikings lol
Okay, but I think this case may also be wildly overstated.

Native Scandinavians with darker skin and hair than is stereotypical would not have been that rare. And undoubtedly the Vikings took other people into their population (slaves or otherwise) during their travels - this would have included southern Europeans, north Africans, and Asiatic populations (e.g. Turkic) given they got all the way to the Black Sea. And it is entirely possible in the course of this some sub-Saharan Africans might also have wended their way to Scandinavia. However, I think we need to be really, really careful about terms like "black". Because if the implication is sub-Saharan Africans, we should probably be looking at a population amongst the Vikings approximating very close to zero, and even the likes of southern Europeans and north Africans only a small proportion.

Yeh but in woke world all white people and white culture is the same so it doesn't matter which nationality he was from

Yeh prove me wrong.

Also you want me to prove you wrong?

I'm fine with POC actors getting roles. (BTW Using "Non-White" is actually racist BTW as it's framing POC in respect to the white people suggesting white is somehow default and they are mutant aberrations so you might want to avoid the term). I actually follow Hannah John-Kamen on Instagram and basically already have Unwelcome on my wishlist on Google Play (I'll wait for reviews ultimately but her involvement alone has be interested)

Also we're in a literally thread about events in woke world and the other day in the Anti-Woke world thread you and your comrades were up in arm over random Q-anon bullshit being spewed by people very few have heard of with like 2,000 twitter followers at most. So I dunno if you really want to start lecturing on charmed lives and playing what is a fallacy that's a mix of whataboutism and a black or white fallacy by suggesting I only care about one thing at a time, I mean for all I can tell that may well be far more true for you and this just being you projecting.

Now are you going to keep being angry I did back to you what you did to me or are you going to have a bit of introspection to understand maybe don't try to strawman my position in future? Oh why am I even asking that would assume you're even here to engage in good faith and not merely bang the drum for what you perceive as your side.

Is it a historical character, though? She's playing a Jarl of a fictional town.

"Go out of your way" = include 1 character. Be honest, you would moan regardless of the proportion.

Based on a real Jarl that did exist.
I can't find that anywhere. I can find a Jarl of a different town, from a different time, who had the same first name. This one doesn't seem to be based on him at all.

Include 1 character in the main cast deliberately so.......
So..... you'd prefer the main cast in any and all shows only reflected the majority demographic in the area. Got it.

That wasn't the reason he was changed though. He wasn't change because all whites were interchangeable. He was changed because they specifically wanted an American Samurai.

Though on the whole I do agree with you. Race swapping historical characters doesn't amuse me. However there is more leeway than the ''mu historical accuracy'' crowd would like to admit. A black Samurai for example is absolutely possible as that's exactly what has happened. Greek gods can look however they wish, and certain historical settings like the Roman empire, Constantinople, or Spain would lend themselves for a more diverse cast. On the flip side a black George Washington would be nonsense since slavery was such a big deal at the time, and the founding fathers would rather place a bomb under their new country than tackle slavery. Likewise a sassy black woman as the neighbor of a man in medieval Paris would be weird.

Funny they chose the name then isn't it?

No even though I'm pretty sure that's how Bollywood films tend to work.
I'd say do it when it makes sense rather than change stuff to do it such that it's rather improbable / unrealistic unless it's literally in the history books as having happened said way.

Race Swapping doesn't amuse me because it kind of speaks to a bigger issue of not thinking certain other countries histories and cultures are worth telling, I mean are you really telling me there's not histories or tales from history that were passed down and survived in other countries cultures such that we need the 10th show about Henry the 8th or whomever?

Well.....here's the harsh truth. If the concern is to make a profit then the history of other countries frequently isn't worth telling. I'm Dutch and essentially nothing about the 80 years war, the disaster year or the house of Orange is on film because apparently those that make movies, games or whatever don't think its a tale worth telling. Tom Cruise is the last Samurai because Hollywood deemed the Japanese perspective not worth telling, and there are no movies about the Mali Empire or the Han Dynasty because the powers that be do not consider them tales worth telling. That's also the reason that history books about Japan or China are so horrifically expensive compared to books about Napoleon or Charles V, because apparently the western public doesn't buy them.

And that's all kinda horrible. But it is what it is.

Uhrm, well no, not really. It's a fairly common Norwegian, Swedish and Danish name. You might as well be arguing that someone called Alex must be based on a specific historical Alex, based on the name alone.

Ohhh of course, so your issue is historical accuracy.

...you realise you're watching a fictional drama, right? Do you take equal issue with all the other historical inaccuracy?

Give me a break. We both know full well you're just whining because someone of a minority is prominent in a show. That's all there is to this.

Is this is a bit like World of Tanks / World of Warships, where the fantasy tanks/ships are "based on a historical design" that turns out to be nothing but a list of suggested features some designer wrote down on the back of a beermat, and where the in-game model doesn't even have the same armour and weaponry as the "historical" source?
