I've noticed that even after 5 episodes in, there still hasn't been a thread on Marvel's newest show: Hawkeye.

Which, to be fair, probably says a lot about how people feel about it.

I love the concept, but the execution leaves a lot to be desired.

A low-stakes, small-time Christmas adventure, featuring who is probably Marvel's longest running, but least explored superhero. Sounds fun!

Im happy that Clint has finally had some time in the spotlight, and I enjoy how much his life as an Avenger has really impacted his body, with his hearing loss - and his mind, with his constant reflection on the death of Natasha from Endgame.

But im not too sure if Im really clicking with Kate Bishop. I just don't think that Kate and Clint have the best on-screen chemistry, which really sucks, seeing as this show is literally focused on the two of them, together.

Im also really not bothered at all about Maya Lopez, who serves as one of the show's antagonists. She is supposed to be getting her own show (Echo), but Im really not sure how they will pull it off, seeing as she appears to be a mute, and she doesn't (currently) seem to have anything even remotely close to a superpower. All she has is a metal prosthetic foot, daddy issues, and she knows some martial arts.

It says a lot when the first time I was ever really happy with this show, was when they pulled in Florence Pugh for Episode 5, who really breathed some life into this show, and continued to steal every scene that she was in.

As it stands, im mostly only interested to see how the show re-introduces Vincent D'onofrio as Kingpin, who previously appeared in the Netflix's Daredevil as the same character.

As an aside, i've not really been too happy with most of Marvel's attempts at making shows. I was a huge fan of WandaVision, but the rest have been honestly middling at best, with each subsequent show getting progressively worse, with this one being the worst so far.

Its not bad - it is just failing to really leave an impression.

Excuse me citizen, it seems you're missing a few spoiler tags here 👮‍♂️

But anyway, I thought half of the the season was pretty boring, and the rest not bad. Episode 3 is the obvious standout and really should have been the first impression to the viewers. I like all the casting, and while I agree the chemistry between Clint and Kate can be lacking, when it works it really does work. They just spent far too long with Clint being a grumpy old man.

My biggest complaint so far is that Hawkeye, the arrow guy, has used his bow and arrows like once. And when he does use them, its actually really fun. I guess it's nice they tried to do more character driven show, but I don't think they spend enough time with each other to sell it. These episodes, and the whole show, just feels short. Supposedly the finale is the longest episode of any MCU show, but I don't see them being able to do much.

Same, although I enjoy Hawkeye far more than Loki simply because I was expecting much, much more from Loki. Although apparently, Loki had the highest ratings and Hawkeye has had so far the lowest.

The writing and action in these Disney+ shows just aren't up to snuff. The Mandalorian really did feel like premium TV, and I was expecting that same level of polish from the MCU stuff. Man I just want to get back to watching MCU movies in theaters with friends again.

It's alright. I like the interplay between Clint and Kate, once that gets really going. Or really any time Clint has to interact with regular people. The tracksuit guys are kind of fun to watch too. The scene with Kate and Yelena talking over macaroni is also really fun. And it's good to see Vincent D'Onofrio back as Kingpin. But aside from character moments, it doesn't really have much going for it. Production values are kind of meh, the fight scenes likewise.

I watched the first episode and even Hailey Steinfeld's energy couldn't save it from being more boring than an early-2000's sitcom. I'm willing to give each new MCU show a shot, but after each one so far having been a dud it only gets one episode to impress me. Prove me wrong She-Hulk.

To quote Shaun IRT Second Coming, "I like it!"

It's not my favorite of the MCU shows, but I appreciate the lower stakes of it, and I feel like it's nice to finally see Hawkeye get a chance to show what he's capable of, rather than constantly be "the dude with the arrows fighting alongside actual superheroes". I think Renner and Steinfeld have pretty solid chemistry.

That said, it's not my favorite of the MCU shows. While I don't mind the lower stakes, as I said earlier, the fact that everything seems to circle around the death of a character who we saw in maybe two scenes is perhaps a bit too low stakes. There's some nice twists, but the actual mystery is just something that I struggle to care about. Echo, I like quite a bit as a dark combination of Hawkeye (partially/mostly deaf vs completely deaf) and Kate Bishop (both lost fathers), and Florence Pugh is, as she was in Black Widow, fantastic. However, neither of them show up until at least halfway through the show, leaving two episodes of...well, let's just say the highlight of the first two episodes involves Hawkeye getting dragged into LARPing.

Maybe I'm just a sucker for MCU, or have no taste, but I'm enjoying the show overall, and am looking forward to seeing how it ends on Wednesday. Not the best MCU show, but if it sticks the landing, it won't be the worst for me, either.

I like the part where the normal reactionaries are claim Kate Bishop is a Mary Sue

Apparently she hasn't had enough on screen training to do all these moves. Because we saw Clint do a lot of on screen training in Thor....

I've been pronouncing your name wrong all this time.
Honestly, I'm not even sure how I pronounce it.

Fun fact, it's a nickname I got at school when on the cricket team, when it was pronounced "Hawk-eye." However, I've heard the name said aloud on YouTube (when people have done readings of some of my writings), and they almost always pronounce it "Hawk-eee."

Usually I'd go with "Hawk-eye," but I'm as far away from the character as you get, so I've kind of internalized "Hawk-eee." Less try-hardy I guess.

I've also never seen a Mary Sue get their ass kicked like Kate.

Really Marvel? Another sit-down with a manic character?

The Black Widow subplot is frustrating. We know what happened. So we can reasonably predict what will happen. Elaina will, one way or another, find out what we already know. Clint did nothing wrong. So, feels kind of a waste of time worrying about it.

So in the end, really felt like this should have just been a movie.

I'd say the whole show was 2/3 filler, 1/3 shit I actually want to see. There just isn't enough of the good stuff (trick arrows, Clint and Kate, Echo). As for the finale itself, the reveal of the surprise character was pretty underwhelming. I like the actor in his role but as with all surprise villains there's no real payoff in seeing him beaten.

The MCU shows continue to more or less disappoint me. They have so many shows lined up for the future, I hope at least one of them manages to replicate the experience I had with WandaVision.

I liked it enough to hope there’s another season, but doubtful. A lot of these new spin-offs also seem like one-offs to help fill in the gaps. It’s best essential to see Black Widow and of course all the Avengers movies first. Plus who can argue against a finale with another appearance by Kingpin? And those trick arrows! Yes, more please.
