Does someone really give you a gun for eating a hamburger, or is that a joke about the social stuff being tied to combat?
Yeah, it's a joke about the social stuff. There's this hamburger challenge you can do on certain days that gives you some of the biggest social stat boosts in the game, and unlocking the social link that gives the best fun-related stuff has a pretty high requirement.
Does the game take place in the American Deep South?
No, in Tokyo, Japan. The guns are actually just realistic looking airsoft guns, but the supernatural mindworld where all the combat takes place runs on "It's real if you believe it is" rules.

Former Escapist Contributor Shamus Young and former(current?) Escapist Rocketeer have been doing some rambling long takes on Final Fantasy XII(AKA We totally didn't crib from Star Wars we swear!)

Both are still in progress ATM but worth a read if you're into watching them take the piss out of the game in their own unique way. I don't ever plan on playing the game and honestly just reading them I'm fucking lost in all the Game of Thronesy political hijinks(which is a shame because I tend to like that sort of thing) but it's still amusing.

Context: the people who run RetroArch and Libretro are pretty reviled within the emulation community cuz they keep taking the work of other emulator developers and passing it off as their own. Just days ago Stenzek, the main force behind very promising new PS1 emu, decided to call it quits because his code kept getting stolen.

Super Mario 64 was released on June 23, 1996. Today is February 6, 2022.

The time between those dates is exactly 1337 weeks.

Super Mario 64 is now confirmed 1337. 4ND 1337 M34N2 17'2 PHoR 7ru3 h4RDcor3 h4xXOR2

If that makes no sense to you, you're either too old or too young to have experienced the leetspeak days of the internet.
I was a month away from turning 7 when Super Mario 64 released. We did not have good internet until 2001, and finally dropped dial-up.

Short of it, it was a modified spelling of exchanging letters with numbers, special signs or glyphs, popular as a sort of code slang on BBS boards and chat rooms back in the late 80's to late 90's. By 2001 leetspeak was already on its way out, but quite a lot of it common internet/gaming slang which you probably do know has its origins there: GLHF, omg, lol, noob, ftw, GG, n1, etc...
