The last bit was over an hour later, likely once the backlash set in lol
TBF, it shouldn't have been necessary, since anyone with their wits about them would have been able to see that she wasn't condoning Russia anyway.

As she said, people are searching for reasons to be offended.

Nope, the term being offended has no meaning and shouldn't be respected, Stephen Fry and all.
Okay I get that everyone loves Stephen Fry because he's witty, was in V for Vendetta, Black Adder and hosts a game show, and in this particular argument the fact that he's gay is also worth a fair bit of street cred. But when did he become the arbiter of this sort of thing? I mean he's smarter than the average bear but how is blindly following his opinion on something any better than other celebrities who have opinions?

I cannot help but wonder if that's not quite what Stephen Fry said. Being offended is a fact of human life, and saying being offended has no meaning is like saying being upset if your mum dies has no meaning.

The relevant issue is what you do with being offended, and the magnitude of the offence. In many cases for minor issues or harmless disagreements, just deal with it and move on. It will in many cases be appropriate to react, usually by politely informing the person of your disapproval and, where necessary, informing them that you'd like them to stop. And finally, of course, we're often offended because someone has done something with a high potential of harm to others, and even stronger measures are justifiable.

I'm not a fan at all if that helps.

“It's now very common to hear people say, 'I'm rather offended by that.' As if that gives them certain rights. It's actually nothing more... than a whine. 'I find that offensive.' It has no meaning; it has no purpose; it has no reason to be respected as a phrase. 'I am offended by that.' Well, so fucking what." - Stephen Fry

Just pasting in for reference, not taking a position on it.

I literally have never taken offense to anything ever in my life. I agree with his quote because that's literally how I have always lived my life before I ever read the quote. If someone says things that are stupid or insensitive, I'll just value their opinions less and less and spend less and less time with them. If someone is say a Nazi and saying Nazi stuff, I'm just gonna ignore them and continue on with my day. Why would I let that make me depressed/angry/whatever for a few hours/days/weeks when can choose to not let that happen? That's how society naturally deems stuff no longer acceptable when enough people don't give people the time of day when they say XYZ.

That's a straight up lie. If you've never been offended by anything, then you don't believe in anything.
To add to that, as pointed out by Liss on the now defunct Shakesville site (to summarise), anything really bad is going to offend people, and worse. If we are to discount people for being offended, nobody can speak up against anything unless they don't really care about it.

No, I never said speaking out about something is bad, I said being offended by what people say is meaningless and shouldn't be respected. Just like I can say I don't like Star Wars (cuz I don't and it sucks), you can say you don't like when someone says some word and if enough people agree, then society will stop using that word. But to act like you are entitled to not hear that word and not be "offended" is bullshit.

No, I just don't get upset if someone doesn't believe what I believe.
That's not what being offended means.

If someone is robbed at knife point, and you have a moral objection, you were offended. And if you weren't, then something is wrong with your reaction.

Considering your attitude in almost every thread I've seen you in... yeah nah dude. 🤣

Anyone who says they don't get offended by anything is a big, fat poopie-pants fibber. It's dumb, tough guy talk from people who think getting mad means you lost.
