I'm skipping it. I'm kind of curious what numbers this has to make to make Sony rethink their approach to these. It's entirely possible this will be the last Sony Marvel movie. For those that don't follow this stuff, Marvel and Sony reached an agreement between 2020-2021 that Marvel would take over production and Sony would pay for some cut of marketing for the MCU related properties Sony maintains the rights to. Morbius is the last one Sony had in production. They haven't announced whats next afaik, not counting the spider-verse stuff. Marvel came in and did some reshoots on Morbius, but it sounds like that did not go well.

Not seeing it either. Thought about it, but not gonna force it. Call me when Spider-Verse 2 is out in October, Sony.

Kind of expected this when they decided to make a full movie based off a character hardly anyone has ever even heard of. Disney really didn't have a plan after Infinity War did they?

I have a copy of the first issue of his standalone comic! Never read it. It's in a stack of a bunch of #1s I collected in my youth; plan was to have enough to retire in my 30s; I turned 42 a couple days ago and I'm working right now; plan's not going so well.

The plan was money. Superhero movies are making money. Money. There is no contingency plan.

Venom had a 30 % approval rating on Rotten Tomatoes. That made its money back (and then some!), from what I've understood.

I know too little to make any statement on the financial prospects of Morbius, but I will say that Venom the character has a more iconic look so I can understand people thinking it looked interesting irrespective of how good or bad it was.

Well audiences don't look too disappointed at least.

tho audiences are shite, don't trust a single one 'em. And most definitely do not trust them for test screening!

Me. I won't say the Venom films are objectively great, but as he is my favorite Marvel character, they made him look so insanely amazing (especially after that shit-show that was Spider-Man 3,) my fanboy love sees past the flaws, and is just happy films exist that capture the character almost perfectly. I loved both movies though they might not meet the standards of "Hollywood classics," to say the least. I still recall seeing the trailer for the first film a few years ago in theater and bouncing in my seat like a child. I would literally watch 3 hours of just him standing there looking menacing with that toothy grin and flailing tongue, and give the film 5 stars.

Basically, if you do Venom justice in anything, I'll watch it. Multiple times.

FYI, this isn't Disney's movie, nor is it part of the MCU proper.

This is Sony's film, and part of their Venom-verse, or SSMU, or whatever you want to call it.

So far, Sony's rebooted superhero franchise has had a success rate of 0/3, and I don't see that changing anytime soon.

I am so glad for Spider-Man's sake that Sony decided to continue to work with Marvel, after that breakup that almost happened a few years ago.

Its a wonder that this same studio managed to pull off Into the Spider-Verse. Their recent performance doesn't fill me with hope when it comes to the sequel, though.

I remembered Morbius from the Spider Man cartoon in the 90s and frankly I don’t think he’s too hard a character to pitch even without the Marvel trappings. He’s a fucking vampire; we’ve been flogging those since the silent film days but I guess a certain faction just can’t accept not everything is Nosferatu.

Not to say that the movie probably isn’t bad, it most certainly is at least schlocky and cliche, but then most of the fun vampire stories that don’t involve the phrases “Your hunger increases” and “I’m making a note” are just like that.

Spider-Verse 2 has mostly the same crew, so I have no doubts. I do wish it was not split in two parts though. The split might as well be saved for Spider-Verse 3.
