Lol at “Do you like the movie?”

What’s he going to say on day of release, “No”?

Also didn’t realize how much of a gamer he has become.

Robbie Coltrane another victim of the eternal void

Robbie Coltrane, whose acting career spanned everything from Bond films to Cracker to Harry Potter, has died aged 72.

The news was confirmed by his agent on Friday.

Born Anthony Robert McMillan in the prosperous Glaswegian suburb of Rutherglen, Coltrane was educated at Glenalmond College, an independent boarding school whose corporal punishment he described as “legalised violence”, before going to the Glasgow School of Art. He had second thoughts about his ability as a painter, and switched to live performance, acting in radical theatre companies (including a troupe from San Quentin State prison) and doing standup, taking the pseudonym Coltrane as homage to celebrated jazz musician John Coltrane.

His first screen credit was Waterloo Sunset, the Richard Eyre-directed Play for Today in 1979, in which he played opposite Queenie Watts’s care-home escapee. Thereafter, he had small appearances in films and TV shows, including Flash Gordon, Are You Being Served?, Krull and Britannia Hospital, his distinctive appearance and sheer size helping him stand out from the crowd. Coltrane’s comedy skills began to take precedence, as he found success in the early 1980s in TV sketch shows such as Alfresco and A Kick Up the Eighties. These placed him firmly in the school of 80s alternative comedy alongside Ben Elton, Emma Thompson and Rik Mayall – an identity reinforced by his regular participation in Comic Strip Presents films including such key entries as Five Go Mad in Dorset, The Beat Generation and The Bullshitters.

Robbie Coltrane

However, Coltrane’s abilities as an actor were increasingly in evidence, and he had considerable success in 1987 with Tutti Frutti, the John Byrne-scripted, Bafta-winning TV series about a washed-up Scottish rock’n’roll band. Coltrane found himself increasingly sought after for bigger roles in higher-profile projects, from Derek Jarman’s Caravaggio (in which he played a cardinal) to Falstaff in Kenneth Branagh’s Henry V. However, it was two religious-themed comedy films – Nuns on the Run and The Pope Must Die – that propelled Coltrane to leading-man status, and put him on the map in the US.

Coltrane’s raised status was confirmed by his casting as the criminal psychologist “Fitz” Fitzgerald in Jimmy McGovern’s TV series Cracker, which first aired in 1993. A defiantly non-comic role, Fitzgerald was a groundbreaking creation: brilliant at his job but a mess in his personal life. Coltrane won the best TV actor Bafta in 1994, 1995 and 1996 for the role. Fitzgerald’s addictive lifestyle also reflected the actor’s: Coltrane admitted to being a heavy drinker in the 1980s, and remained famously combative, once threatening to beat up Piers Morgan in a London restaurant. He then found himself cast in two Bond films, GoldenEye and The World Is Not Enough, as morally ambiguous KGB agent Valentin Dmitrovich Zukovsky.

Coltrane settled into a mid-period career of alternating roles in plush Hollywood productions (Message in a Bottle, From Hell, Ocean’s Twelve) with easygoing TV appearances (Alice in Wonderland, The Gruffalo). He also indulged his interest in vintage cars in the 1997 series Coltrane’s Planes and Automobiles. However, he found himself at the top of the list for the casting of Hogwarts’ school caretaker Rubeus Hagrid in the film adaptation of JK Rowling’s Harry Potter series. The first in the series, Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone, was released in 2001, and gained Coltrane a new audience of younger fans, and helped re-energise his career, particularly on British TV. In 2009, he played investigating detective DI Hain in David Pirie’s Murderland, and his performance as a TV star accused of sexual abuse in the 2016 Channel 4 show National Treasure was greeted with acclaim.

Coltrane married the sculptor Rhona Gemmell in 1999, but they separated in 2003. They had two children.
It's so annoying all these talented actors with rich work histories always get relegated to "Harry Potter" actor in news headlines all the damn time. I hate society, yes you, society...I can sense you watching!

@hanselthecaretaker. I have no opinion of the movie, but I thought you might want to check this out. I still have not seen it yet, nor the previous movie.

What’s funny is last year *everyone* was like, “Halloween Kills sucks! What were they thinking?!”

Now more often than not I’m seen, “Halloween Ends sucks! What were they thinking?! I’m going to go watch Halloween Kills!”

Kinda goes to show people will ***** no matter what, but ask them how they would’ve done it and it’s like, uh…what?

Anyways, Stephen King also weighed in -

It's funny how the opinion poll changes. It's why I don't find immediate reactions on Twitter or Facebook worth shit. Be they positive or negative.

Well known hot tub streamer Amouranth is a hot topic again, tho a little different this time

Working under the assumption even just half of that is true, that's not a husband, that's a pimp. Puts some of the common criticism that get thrown at her in a very different, and darker, perspective.

In this specific context, calling her just a streamer is being polite. That she is very, very active on OnlyFans makes your pimp remark unsettlingly accurate.

Some points, besides the reviewer admitting to the opening metaphor being unrelated to the subject (humor piece I guess?) -

- The whole point of Kills was to showcase Michael as a villain, and the negative effects of the hysteria he inflicts upon the community of Haddonfield.

- That “I’m coming for you, Michael.” ending was only in the extended cut, and likely left out due to the time jump caused by COVID delays in filming. Which means ignoring it makes sense.

- It isn’t about Laurie’s personal trauma as she’s been there, done that for forty years. It’s not unreasonable to think of someone making an effort to turn a leaf seeing as wallowing in misery and living in fear didn’t exactly pan out.

- It technically delivered on the title, and while pulling the rug out a bit will be divisive, it doesn’t necessarily make it a sin.

- The criticism that Ends lacks the aspects showcased in Kills (Michael the serial killer doing what he does best) seems oddly ironic when earlier it’s stated how disappointing Kills was for focusing on that.

I agree that it could have been paced better, and its premise could have been built up more effectively, but going the fan service route (which Kills largely did) likely would’ve also felt a bit too predictable. I didn’t mind the subversion and it added to the fact that each of these three movies did something different thematically.

I’d love to hear what they originally had planned before the COVID delays changed the time table (Laurie’s phone ending), but after a second watch, the movie does a pretty damn good job of delivering on its premise. Pretty much every main plot point is foreshadowed rather effectively, and it has more character development than either of the previous, even if it may not have been the characters we wanted that most from.

I’ve never read comics much, but it seems like they’re really digging deep into the roster considering I’ve never heard of half the characters they’ve been introducing lately. Anyways, they could probably do worse.

Having said that, does anyone else get the impression from watching Harrison Ford in movies that he’s perpetually nervous? A buddy and I used to joke about it as kids.

Ross has been in the MCU already. He was just played by John Hurt before. John Hurt died, but they're recasting the character with Harrison Ford. He was the general in The Incredible Hulk, the general who was responsible for the Sokovia Accords in Captain America: Civil War, and he was the general chasing after Natasha/Black Widow in Black Widow.

Thaddeus Ross is a very important character in the Hulk’s backstory. He’s generally the clueless asshole who’s always chasing him with tanks and jets and never seems to understand that shit just makes Hulk mad and when Hulk mad, Hulk smash. Awkwardly he’s also the father of Bruce’s traditional love interest, Betty Ross.

It was William Hurt but otherwise you are dead on the money. And even then it was something I had to check despite my turbo nerd credentials.

Here we go again -

"Halloween Ends was NOT a film that the Fans wanted! This was an Origins Story! The Corey Story! We deserve a movie worthy of Michael Myers & the Halloween Franchise! We love this Franchise whole heartily and this version of a Halloween Movie left us sad, mad, disappointed, and Infuriated. Please give us a movie that shows us what Halloween is really about. Our Apex Predator.... the King of Slasher Movies Michael Myers! This movie gave us a weak pathetic Michael who needed his mask to survive! This isn't OUR MICHAEL MYERS! Our Killer is Strong , relentless, & unstoppable! Please right this wrong! We beg of you !!!"

Holy actual fuck are these people embarrassing. They need to grow up and get over it, because a redo isn’t going to happen, and it shouldn’t.
