Remember the $900 12gb 4080 that Nvidia quietly unlaunched? They relaunched it as the 4070ti. But $100 price cut. Still $800 for a f'ing 70 card tho.
If they'd knocked off $300 and launched it as the RTX 4060 it would probably have flown of the fucking shelves, but based on what's said here its a load of bullshit.

And for some more technicals, here is the scruffy bastard himself being equally as unkind.

Jay, Paul and Hardware Unboxed were no kinder to it.

Nor should they be. I’m a staunch nVidia user for most of my PC Gaming lifetime because their cards have been the benchmark - more or less - in performance, stability and longevity where AMD have (with two exceptions) caused me nothing but grief.

But this 40 series horseshit is absurd bordering on criminal and the more customers they lose to AMD and Console Gaming for their hubris, the better.

Unfortunately AMD has managed to crap their pants in unique ways this generation too- with the utterly pointless XT and the overheating issues the reference-model XTX has been seeing (possibly from not having enough evaporative liquid in the vapor chamber).

It's just (still) a bad time for anyone who needs a new video card.

Yeah, this whole generation is a bust. I would honestly just recommend people to get a PS5 if they need a gaming machine right now, but that advice would also be pretty useless BECAUSE YOU STILL CAN'T GET ONE OF THOSE.

Aren't they a specific SKU though? They’re not off the shelf units as I recall it. Of course I could be wrong.
Yeah, the PS5 uses a tailormade system on a chip APU. Based off AMDs rdna2 (i.e. 6000 series cards) but still a custom job.

The 4070 had come out, for an MSRP of 600 USD. The CAD isn't doing great so I knew this wasn't the best news it could be but it's worse than expected with a retail price of 1000 CAD which would be 200 over the adjusted price. My hopes of the 4000 series driving down the cost of a 3060 is dwindling fast.

nVidia seems to want the opposite, really.
I know you're right and it'll come down to AMD making a move to change anything. I am so damn tired of my 1060, although I should really shut my mouth because most games have minimum specs lower than that lately.

I wonder if Nvidia understands that by doing this they are teaching developers and consumers to not worry about cutting edge technology.

The only reason I can come up with for nVidia's actions lately is that Huang wants video cards to become luxury items.
They sort of always were luxury items. A PC doesn’t strictly need one to be used for the applications 98% of people use one for. But like the automobile industry we sort had worked out how to get great power and performance to a bigger market with things like the 70 and 60 series cards while still maintaining a prestige line for those with too much disposable income or highly specific use cases. It’s not so much that Jensen (we’re still not asking for this) wants to make video cards luxury items but rather he wants to get away with charging Porsche 911 prices for V6 Mustangs.

In normal times, I'm thinking the 4070 should be selling for more like $400 rather than $600. I hear it is not selling. Maybe the market will respond accordingly. ITMT, my ancient 480 8 Gig can run almost anything at 1080p on good settings at 60 FPS. If it dies before I'm ready to pull the trigger on something? One can find a 580 8 Gig for around $100. That will suffice till something better comes.

You can get a used or refurbished 2070 for like $200 and it'll play most games at 1440p medium/high at over 100fps.

Most games have DLSS or Fidelity FX and that is going to massively extend the lifespan of these cards.

I currently have an RX 5700xt which I've been running for 3 years. Its performance falls somewhere between an RTX 2060 Super and an RTX 2070 (and sometimes beats the 2070's performance depending on your resolution), and that card is still going strong. I use two 1440p 144hz monitors and it drives them at over 100fps absolutely no problem in the vast majority of games. And for any games where it can't I crank up Fidelity FX until it can.

If all you're looking to play at is 1080p and are willing to drop your settings to medium instead of ultra then the RX 580 will play everything on the market at 60+fps, which is a pretty great deal for something that's less than $100.

New at $200 is this one. Might get this in the interim if the 4070 doesn't drop to $400 by Q1 2024, get a few years out of it and upgrade as necessary. Funny, 1 8 pin connector, 500w power supply: I could R&R my 480 in my current rig for now without changing anything else out. Tempting.

Even better, especially if you don't care about ray tracing.

And now the 4060ti

This should be going for about 1/2 what their pricing it.

Look I'll be honest, an even $300 sounds like it would be just right for an 8GB XX60 card if one takes general inflation into consideration.

Or better yet, break it down thus:

4050: 8GB, $250
4060: 12GB, $320
4070: 16GB, $440
4080: 20GB, $560
4090: 32GB; $1,000 (lets face it, this is the flagship card and only lunatics buy it, let them charge like wounded bulls for it)

There's be some inflation due to board partners wanting their cut but this doesn't feel like an unreasonable price/performance line up to me. I mean they'll never do it but it'd be nice.
