I'd be really interested in when you think this wasn't the case.
NES, SNES, Gamecube, Gameboy, Gameboy Advance, Nintendo DS, Nintendo 3DS, Sega Genesis, Sega Gamegear, PS1, PS2, Xbox Original...

Game consoles not being PCs has been a thing for a long time. Even if that wasn't the case it's only in the last couple generations that any consoles have been blatant about the fact that they are just low to mid end PCs.

What is it about consoles that make people so tribalistic?

You don't see Coca-Cola drinkers bragging about how much better their soda sells than Pepsi. You don't see McDonalds eaters making liking McDonalds their identity, like console fanboys do.
As a general rule, there is a direct correlation between amount of money spent on a thing and the lengths people will go to justify and convince their peers that it was money well spent. Especially when said people are either children or morons (or both).

Console Wars would be cool if it were part of Robot Wars, where people built robots and had them fight.
So like, add weapons to an XBox and a PS5 and have them fight! Or whatever....

I don't think it's just money spent. But also time spent on playing those systems. Like not only did you buy the wrong system but you also wasted thousands of hours playing the shitty one.

Basically full-on delusion. Repetitively trying to convince themselves and everyone else around them. I never regretted a home console I got. I knew what I was getting into when I decided to ask for a GameCube for Christmas. My brother and I also had a PS2 that we shared before the GC came out. We both have our own PS2s for a long while now, but he still has the original slim model we later got. The original fat model died on us like many beforehand.

The way I see it is, If you got a console and you had a shitload of fun with it then it doesn't matter.

Which should be the case, yet many of these asshats bought too much into the "console war" marketing of the late '80s, 90s, and early 2000s. There's an insecurity and need to shout "I'm better than you!". Or the whole buying a console at launch as a symbol of status. That you're (supposedly) making the big bucks (or your parents/guardians) and you can get anything that's luxurious.

It's called "Sunk cost fallacy".

That only applies if people are not enjoying their purchase, but still investing in it. If I spend $500 on a new console and enjoy it, there's no fallacy just because others (for whatever reason) believe I bought the "wrong" console.

If the sunk cost fallacy were to apply, I'd say it's the gaming industry on the whole, and people who continue to buy half-finished cash grabs convincing themselves that having bought a mountain of shit to find one or two diamonds buried in it was worth it.

I feel like this just applies to the entertainment business as a whole. Not specifically video games.

PC is overrated. In order to play many games on Windows 11 you have to create exclusions to the anti-virus or go hunting for the correct settings. I say that as someone who has used all of them. Just get a PS5 with its many exclusive games and stable AAA games. Also, I blame unreal engine.

But what actually is the best console now? I have a PS4 but wouldn't mind upgrading/dating.

Console specifically. The PS5. In fact, if you go on Ebay you can buy a Ps5 from a scalper for cheaper than retail prices considering the console is widely available now they are forced to sell at a loss now.

But at the same time, fuck 'em let them sit on all those consoles and suffer with losing all that cash.

The Xbox is technically more powerful, but they are currently shitting on themselves and it doesn't look to be ending anytime soon so the Ps5 is the better option. However if you don't have a switch yet, the new Zelda comes out in a couple weeks, and that'll probably be cool.
