Honestly, the harsh truth is that death by implosion was probably a less cruel fate than had they been stuck in the cold dark for days, desperately hoping for a rescue that never came until they either died of hypothermia or suffocation. As I understand it, if there was a pressure failure, death would have been pretty much instant, as in "dead in less than a second" instant. Cold comfort to the dead and the those they left behind, but in the wake of tragedy you take any comfort you can.
