Movie opens near the end of one of Indy's old adventures during WW2; rest of it takes place in 1969, long after Crystal Skull.

I'll spoil it if you want. Mutt enlisted at some point to spite Indy and died in Vietnam; Indy couldn't handle it and him and Marion separated some time after.
Crystal Skull isn't a great movie, but Goddamn it didn't deserve to be made irrelevant like that. What a downer. .

Ok, not going to be seeing the next Indy film any time soon.

But...oh, that looks like a mess.

I'm a be honest, Mutt is in no way a loss because he was an annoying little fuck and Shia was awful in the part. I understand why he was asked, and I understand why he took the job. But he sucked and the movie was poorer for his presence. And honestly considering how tempestuous Indy and Marion's relationship was, if Mutt's enlistment was to spite Indy and he died, I can absolutely see them separating after that.
I think it makes sense, and yes Shia was annoying. I didn't like it because 1) it undoes the whole point of Crystal Skull, 2) only for Dial of Destiny to go through the same motions and get to the same ending and 3) it's a little too miserable for Indiana Jones to lose his only son. They could've written Mutt out of it without having to kill him.

Right? Just say Mutt settled down and now lives a happy life with the wife and kids, and Indi doesn't want to ruin that peace by bringing his problems into it. As for Marion, just say it didn't work out for whatever reason, like they worked well together when on adventures, but learned they're not a good match during day to day life, so they parted. That happens, that's a perfectly good reason for a relationship to end. But I guess they wouldn't write that because there's no drama in it.

I'd genuinely be happier if they had just killed Marion instead of just having them split apart again. I suspect they left it open ended for the possibility to bring her back at one point, but this movie is going to do terribly and now we're stuck forever with "Indy has just an absolute shit life".

That's not how it ends.
How the movie ends:
Indy and Marion get back together.

Watched Friday the 13th: The Final Chapter and Friday the 13th: a New Beginning.

Had slightly raised hopes for The Final Chapter, seeing as Crispin Glover and Corey Feldman were in it... some misplaced trust fueled by 80's nostalgia, I guess. Anyway, it's not great, but Crispin Glover does a very Crispin Glover dance in it and I guess that counts for something.

A New Beginning actually was semi decent. Not good, but not too terrible. It's actually been the most engaging movie in this franchise so far, largely due to there being some actual drama and interplay between the characters. It wasn't just 'teens go in house, Jason kills them', there was a sense of these characters being characters and having relationships and interactions with one another. There's a scene where three of the teens display worry for what happened to their missing friends (that are already killed off), and we get a nice zoom-in on them as they show concern. Pretty basic shit in any other movie, but for a Friday movie it's like seeing a chimp understand physics.

Also, this movie fucking loves boobs... a lot. And I mean, I get it, boobs are swell, but Jesus Christ, was the director 14 years old? Oh, and the guy who gives Indiana Jones his hat in The Last Crusade is in this too, and I never realized how stupendously dreamy he is. One of the cops from Speed is in this as well, funny enough.

The director was Danny Steinmann. Made his debut writing and directing hardcore porno in the 70s, which is where you want to be if you're writing and directing hardcore porno.

The director of A New Beginning actually made the actors on-set uncomfortable with how sleazy he was. Fun fact: the original actress who played Tina (the one who got the shears to the eyes) was fired because she refused to go topless, and her replacement just happened to be a cup size or two larger.

Oh, and the replacement actress's name? Debi Sue Voorhees. Means that one way or another, every single Friday the 13th movie does, in fact, have a Voorhees in it.

Considering they killed a live snake in the very first movie, I'm not surprised there was some less than stellar human decency behind the scenes with some of these entries.

Oh, by the way, in A New Beginning when they're in the office of the guy who runs the Pinehurst Halfway House there's a poster on the wall that reads "destroy a family tradition - stop child abuse". This being in the midst of the Reagan era, which was all about a return to "traditional family values", you have this movie (or at least someone working on this movie) rightfully equating family values to child abuse. Maybe reading too much into one background poster, but it was still kinda awesome to see.

I also kind of feel bad for John Shepard, the guy who played Tommy Jarvis in A New Beginning. He didn't know it was a Friday the 13th film until he showed up on set, as the script was written in a way to conceal the killer. He spent weeks, if not months, researching the role to play a mental patient accurately, because he was under the impression he had signed up for a drama about a mental health patient.

Fatman on Peacock: Forgettable story of Mel Gibson as gun toting Santa. Saw it some time ago but bring it up because I just saw the much, much better Violent Night with David Harbour as Santa who we find out is a nearly immortal viking doing a Die Hard. Amazon Prime.

Christmas magic type of movie with hard R violence.

Oh man, that sucks. He did feel weirdly out of place with how intense he was.

John Wick 4 - 5/10

Honestly, a slog to sit through. The stunt work, fight choreography and action cinematography is great, but the action scenes go on so long. Too long. Doesn't help that John Wick is not a versatile character, he does a lot of similar moves, and he's now pretty much a superhero now. There's only so many times I can see invulnerable John mow down slews of goons, hold his suit in front of his face, fall from crippling heights, and repeatedly run over by a car before it becomes repetitive tedium. Oh wait, here comes a mini boss. Ok, he's dead, back to killing goons. If it were me, I'd cut the action scene by like half. I liked the Hotline Miami scene tho.

Also that underground assassin society stuff has just gotten bloated and silly. I mean, it was always a silly, but it's just gotten comical and obnoxious. The ever more convoluted rules and traditions they keep pulling out their ass, the designed-by-commitee 'cool' look, the overly serieux of it all.
Yeah, pretty much the same feelings here. I go on record as saying that, even if they never reached the heights of the first, that I have liked all of the Wick movies, at least up until now. This is a nearly three hour long movie, and while I would have enjoyed it had they gone and done new and interesting things, this movie instead feels like a greatest hits compilation of moments and fights from the rest of the series. Here's John on a horse, here he is fighting in a nightclub, oh look here we are fighting armored bad guys in an opulent hotel, here he is driving around in circles while shooting people, etc. Like, I love the song that played during the Red Circle scene during the first movie and loved the song for it, but I honestly just about rolled my eyes when I heard them use it for the Hotline Miami scene. The scene was probably the best one, and still loved the music, but to get there is about two hours of movie. I also liked when they used a Justice song later too, but God this movie was a slog.

Oh! I also genuinely enjoyed the idea that the Wick movies share the same universe as The Warriors. It is both really crazy but also really makes so much sense about how the movies operate, especially with how NY is run.

Elemental

Failed allegory about racism and/or xenophobia. It fails because, like Zootopia, the prejudices illustrated in the movie are 100% correct in real life. Predators eat prey. Carnivores eat herbivores. Foxes eat bunnies. And while Elemental's tweener boilerplate romcom about mixing fire and water is very cute, in real life - believe it or not - enough water will put down a fire just as true as a big enough fire will boil water.

It's like if Pixar wanted to teach kids about confronting their fears by making a movie about Russian roulette. With sentient revolvers or something.

Whatever, just wash your hands.
Asteroid City. 8/10. I couldn't really tell you what the movie is about overall, plus, spoilers. But its Wes Anderson, if you know his style then you know if you will like this movie or not. Anderson excellent at creating an ideal world that just feels cozy and like the kinda world you want to exist in. I can see this movie being regarded as a bit more pretentious then most of his work, but I still enjoyed the hell out of it. I wouldn't rate it as high as French Dispatch or Grand Budapest, but I would put it in the top 5 that I have seen.
