Looks like PS5 might be my last console, because I'm not buying one without a disk drive. Glad I ended up getting one last year instead of waiting for this lame pro version. Also there's still only like 2 or 3 reasons to own a PS5.
I've been waiting for the pro. Now I'm worried the not Pro w/ disc will be available at $500 new. Tough sell, even $500 when the gen is 1/2 over.

I think there will be a PS6. As things stand? I doubt there will be a PS7. Services will be the next big thing as you run them on any piece of hardware you please.

ITMT: I still may get a normal PS5 w/ disc if they're still around by 2025.

Normal PS5's won't go away, they might be acting stupid at the moment, but they aren't yet stupid enough to have a $700 SKU be the only model on the market.

Can we safely say this gen is one of the worst there is? The 9th gen is such a mess of nothing and I feel the consoles reflect that. The Switch may still be going and doing a great job but from what I understand it's technically 8th gen. Of course, don't get me wrong, there are plenty of great games that came out this gen. But it just doesn't feel like there's been much weight to it compared to previous years of gaming

I'd say it's just diminishing returns on graphics at this point. I personally don't consider it the worst generation, because at least there's gaming variety and a very open market. I understand how you feel though.

The Switch lasted this long and it's amazing games games are still released on it, so I have zero complaints. They're online still sucks and is a far cry fom when it was actually decent and free. The slow rotation of classic nintendo games is bull crap though. Especially compared to the Wii and Wii U classic games shop.

What Microsoft and Sony should be doing is getting their heads out of their asses and actually make single player games with unique art styles. Microsoft doesn't want to compete anymore, because they got their feelings hurt and couldn't make all the money in universe with their dumb strategies. Microsoft thinks game pass is going to carry them forever when it's not. And they're still losing money on that, despite what they say otherwise.

Sony is acting like it's seventh generation again and just doing multiplayer only crap. At this point, I just look for good games and that's it. If Sony or microsoft aren't going to do the much, I have plenty of other avenues that are better. Yotei Is coming out next year so at least at something, but way more needs to be done on the first party angle.

Shorter load screens. That’s about the high point of this gen is less time loading, more time playing.

Disregarding generational enumerations, the last substantial leap was from the PS2/OG Xbox to the PS3/Xbox 360. The hardware ramped up significantly. we were introduced to HD gaming, and out online presence became more pronounced. Everything after that has been been graphical updates and peripheral applications, and core gaming has suffered since. But I'll wait for @CriticalGaming or others to claim that gaming is better than it ever has been...

That niggling gripe aside, the PS5 Pro is just dumb. Committing resources into an entirely other console that does little more than tax all but the most capable and affluent for literally minimal returns while the existing product on offer does just fine what the majority expects and needs is the definition of out of touch. Say what you want about Microsoft, at least they've not (yet) added a 0.5 generation of a console that does such minute technical shit better for 40% more the price.

At this rate, if they want to start selling "new" consoles, I'd rather they just sell PS3 and 360s again. They could literally market them as "gaming without all the bullshit," and make a killing.

I have a PS5 DISC system.

I really don't play it much and have no intention of getting a PS5 Pro. There's a few factors
  1. Playstation doesn't allow third party controllers or when they do it's basically just the PS5 controller. I have cerebral palsy. It's minor, but they keep making the controller bigger and now its difficult for me do things you need like holding L2 and use the left stick and the d-pad. I actually bought the console for Spider-man and GOW: Ragnarok, but both games require a bit of dexterity I can't manage with the PS5 controller. I use an PowerA Xbox one "mini" controller. It's about the size of a PS3 controller, but with Xbox button mapping. It works great, but not on PS5. I do have a cronus max adapter, but A. it's pain to setup, B. Sony is trying to software block it due to COD hacking, C. Sony keeps adding dumb haptic shit to their controller you can't emulate. The whole thing just makes me tired and all my controllers work fine on PC/steamdeck/Xbox.

The irony is I can get by with the PS4 controller...BUT THEY FUCKING BLOCK IT ON PS5 GAMES!
  2. The pricing. I'm grandfathered into the old plan through 2025 I think because I bought a shit ton of cheap credits, but $150? Fuck off man.
  3. So I was happily playing some FFIX on PS5, which I own on other systems, but fuck I own a PS5 I should use it. They deprecated all the final fantasy from catalog....and blocked local installs from playing. Oh I can buy it on their store...the game I downloaded from the catalog I FUCKING PAY FOR. So fuck me and my saves I guess.
Honestly I ended up buying Silent Hill 2 Remake and Metaphor: Fabrizio or whatever on steam and ended up just hooking up my PC to my TV. It might happen some day, but so far steam has never taken my games away from me. Sony has. I'm just tired of Sony being miserable to deal with. I know these issues are unique to me but they've definitely lost me as a customer.

On a side note, yeah if I bother to own a console I like collection the discs or carts. I'm just old school like that.

Later in the generation, like on its way out, it opened the door for the bullshit that took front stage in the next gen. I won't for a second fault the entirety of that gen's relevance for what came after it. Arguably, devs and publishers had balls when that gen started; new tech and capabilities showed us a lot of innovation. Since? Stagnant, reboots, remasters, and iterative titles of old and tired franchises at the "low, low" cost of monetization of everything they could justify putting a price on.

Let's face it: the current gen isn't about the experience; it's strictly about what we'll pay for, and anyone who runs out to buy a PS5 Pro just proves the money hungry right that we'll pay for anything, minimum effort required. Have you ever wonder why luxury cars advertise their "0-to-60mph" time as a feature, and ever questioned when a civilian in normal, legal circumstances would ever require anything beyond what basic economy vehicles can do for half the price? There's your PS5 Pro, 0-to-60mph in 3.5 seconds when the speed limits most places you'll be starting from zero are around 20-30mph, i.e.: unnecessary but capable, and the latter is what idiots pay for.

The 360 and PS3 gen started making people pay for online play, micro-transactions, broken games with day-one patches, on disc DLC, and requiring online connections.

With an appreciable upgrade to the online experience. Fair's fair. And we could still play our games offline if we chose not to spend for the online features. We got then "more" for a price; the status quo now is "the rest" for a price. Oh, and let's not forget you're obligated to eat up hard drive space installing games you used to be able to play from the disc with installation to the hard drive being a convenient option.

micro-transactions, broken games with day-one patches, on disc DLC, and requiring online connections.
None of that to the extent that we saw afterwards in the next generation. We became complacent with those shitty practices, and devs and publishers have been pushing the limit ever since. The PS5 Pro has NO disc option meaning ownership of games they'll charge full retail for is contingent upon its availability to you which is itself contingent upon their willingness to support it beyond the period of time it's deemed lucrative for them. Not saying Sony is shutting the servers down in 6 months or anything so drastic, but anyone who invests in the Pro who spends hundreds of dollars on games in the future might not be able to plug in their $700 machine in a decade and utilize those purchases at their will. I can plug in my 360 or PS3 right now, and play any of my games for those consoles, and those systems are already +15 years old.

I love how people like to pretend NES, SNES, and PS1 era games weren't broken as fuck or greedy cash grabs.

Ya'll remember movie tie-in games? Ya'll remember glitched sprite backgrounds? Ya'll shovelware promoted as official big time games? Mary-Kate and Ashley remembers.

Seriously? You're equating bad games then to a broken industry now? The industry has always been a business hell bent on making money, agreed. But what we have now is a "business" doing far less than it ever has done, and expecting more of our money for it, and that's irrefutable. We can't act like the anomalous janky game or shitty movie tie-in a decade ago is equivalent to the absolute spate of games today that gatekeep content behind paywalls, loot boxes, and unsustainable amounts of time investment to enjoy them at their core.

Just saying, the school bully who gave wedgies and hurt feelings kids isn't nearly as bad as the adult who steals identities and ruins lives.

Damn right I remember. My big brother and I were lucky to avoid most garbage license games back in the day.

It's not that they didn't exist. It's just that they weren't so open and obvious about it. Most broken games ended up selling poorly or not doing too well once word got out. I'm just glad we're in a time where if we do get a license game. It's usually of good quality. Because most
learned not to rush out a game to tie into some movie or TV show for the holiday release. If there is a bad movie to game adaption, it's usually on the mobile platform.

Games are NOT more expensive today. Collectors editions that cost extra also come with extra content like DLC characters and season pass content.

The reason why things feel more greedy today are because with the ability to patch and add content to games it feels like you are continuously getting charged. Microtransactions are dogshit of course, but they are not in the majority of games, only very specific live service driven games like your Call of Duties and Sports games.

On top of that even with microtransactions there are a shitload of games available for 100% free. Just fucking Free, for the whole thing, as much as you want. It's crazy. Path of Exile being a great example of a game where you can put 1000's of hours easily for absolutely NOTHING. You could never do that even back in the Ps3 era.

You were a child back in these days so you didn't see or understand the bullshit of the gaming industry, nor did you understand the expensive cost of what video games USED to cost. Gaming is CHEAPER today then it was 30 years ago. And the quality of games is far better. There is no argument here.

Depends on who you're talking about. Most of the AAA? No, and mostly mediocre or unfinished garbage you have to pay extra later to get something standard. The AA and indie scene. Yes a majority of the time.
