Playing High on Life.

The combat is spongy and pew pew boring but I like the more puzzle-y interludes and generally just exploring around and collecting stuff, which benefit from a nice expanding swathe of traversal abilities and gun gimmickry.

I'm kinda over Rick and Morty and Adult Swim in general but the game has the wherewithal of featuring some other people that I do continue to enjoy like Red Letter Media and Joel Haver and the nasal dude from Smiling Friends, so power to them.

Tomar is in High on Life?
Right, that dude.

So far I recognized him as the red door thing at the beginning and the drone enemies.

EDIT: I meant Zach Hadel who voices Charlie in Smiling Friends. Tomar is also in Smiling Friends but I don't know if he's in High on Life.

Pym from Smiling Friends is also in this voicing the knife. I thought that was Roiland doing his Rick shtick.

Apparently Tim Robinson's also in this.

You have more tolerance than me, because I dropped Rick & Morty after the third season, and that writing style of humor I hate.

I did so more Survival Mode in Street Fighter Alpha 2 Gold. I did a complete run with Sakura this time.

I will probably get back into playing Astro Bot. I took a long enough break from it.

Marvel Rivals actually. Pretty cool game! I missed out on Overwatch when it was big because I just wasn't interested, plus school and work kept me occupied during that time. Catching a glimpse of some of the fun people had back then when OW was at its peak is something I'm glad I did get to experience. I also like how it's 3rd person, which I feel gives the game a lot more clarity on what or where you're getting hit, specially considering how hectic shit can get in team scrambles.

Game looks real good and plays real good too. And ...goddamn...these character models got ripped up real quick, I'll tell you that much.

Barrelling towards the finish line in High on Life. The shooting is no good, which sucks for a shooter, and rarely merits switching from your starter pistol. You get what are essentially an SMG with some pissweak damage and an equally lame shotgun; there's a fourth gun too contrived to even bother (fire smaller creatures which will do the attacking for you, but again, why take the long route when I can just shoot my pistol at them?). The traversal mechanics fare much better, and the guns are more fun as traversal tools than they are actual guns. As for the comedy it can be pretty hit and miss, but with enough hits to qualify as funny.

There's one annoying bit involving an alien that will float around you like a fly and blather endlessly. The voice is so shrill I had to mute the TV, and even then he managed to annoy me by floating ahead too close to the camera and obstructing the character's movement.

Finished my Gloomstalker run in BG3. Despite this being my third full playthrough, it was the longest one yet at 82 hours. I guess the time since my last one made me drop back into that completionist mindset and want to see everything again. Which I pretty much did, I don't think there were many quests or things left unfound by the end. It was my most thorough playthrough yet. In the final confrontation I had so many more allies than in previous playthroughs that I didn't even use half of them. The climax of the game is still an absolute joke even in Honor mode, and you can cheese it ridiculously easily. I had Karlach turn into a Mind Flayer, and with her flight and insane movement speed she reached the brain stem in just a single round. Then in the fight against the dragon pretty much all I needed to do was summon Yurgir and use the Kith'raki Inferno, and the fight was like half done right away. Yurgir is immune to fire damage, and therefore most of the red dragon's attacks as well, but more importantly he can throw out a cluster of explosives that explode when contacting any fire. So I could just keep chucking bombs into the inferno and deal ridiculous amounts of damage for basically free.

I did kind of feel like cheating when I made Karlach and Open Hand Monk and then built her into a total cheese build, which blows all other classes out of the water in terms of damage bar none. With the right gear, multiclassing and fudging of stats she can easily put out like 200 damage a round without critical hits. Which that build doesn't even get to do often, because everything dies too quickly! She almost completely solo'd the Gortash fight, nothing could stand before her. It was so powerful that it somewhat reduced my enjoyment of the combat encounters, because they'd be over in 3 rounds tops due to her being so unstoppable.

I do wonder what my experience with this game would be / have been if I wasn't an avid DnD 5e player. There are so many systems, abilities and dynamics the game leaves completely up to the player to discover that I'm sure I'm much more aware of them than the average player. For example, due to how close the party members are to each other in the boarding room camp in act 3, you can use Shadowheart and Jaheira (assuming they're not in your party) for Heroes' Feast and a level 6 Aid for over 40 extra max hp completely free. Furthermore Shadowheart can cast buffs like Freedom of Movement, Death Ward and Protection from Poison, which last until your next Long Rest and take zero resources. Once you start getting items that set your stats to a specific score, multiclassing opens up some ridiculous possibilities.

Separate Ways ended up getting done in one sitting, with a short break for food after Chapter 5. Lot of fun, definitely a huge improvement over the original SW. Wasn't expecting to get a better rank than B (the minimum) so I'm pretty happy with this result.

As for what to play next, I might dig out Elden Ring and finally make a proper go at it. My last save is at the bonfire right before Margit the Fell Omen (never actually fought him) but I'll probably start a new character to relearn the ropes.

Speaking of breaking the game, I'm now at level 11, where the game turns more into a sandbox of finding out ways to utterly humiliate the enemies. I finished Shadowheart's quest, and the final fight was a total riot of juggling the enemies from within a Globe of Invulnerability with Wall of Ice followed by Ice Storm followed by Hunger of Hadar followed by Black Hole... I was laughing like Beavis and Butthead by myself as the enemies were hopelessly outmatched. I also completely stripped the Shar door of its mystique by just opening it with Knock. In another fight I blasted a cluster of enemies with Cone of Cold, and then immediately Quickened Spelled another Cone of Cold on them. Letting go of the usual RPG hoarder mindset and just embracing spamming the most powerful abilities and consumables and taking plenty of Long Rests has opened the game up in a whole new way.
On my first playthrough fighting Balthasar I had such a hard time beating him (really wasn't paying attention to properly building my character and team mates initially) that I just polymorphed him into a sheep before triggering the dialoge between him and Dame Aylin, and then I pushed him over the side into the abyss. Fight over.

Rejecting feminine clothing in order to appease modern feminists doesn't give you that many ways to dress up characters. The two women on your team in Hi-Fi Rush are dressed too similarly.

Finished level 7, got a D. Playing it on Hard.

Not really. Also, Korsica's outfit suffered battle damage. Peppermin'ts didn't. You really have a warped view on morality and feminism. Then again, you never claimed to be in the first place. Everything sounds like a you problem, and not the characters nor game.

Do better next time.

I've been getting Master Ninja Ranks in various Chapter Challenges for Ninja Gaiden II Black.

I replayed Card City Nights this weekend. A game I remembered with fondness after I was part of the multiplayer beta for Card City Nights 2 and thinking they had majorly screwed up the design of and therefore thinking "Why didn't you do it like in Card City Nights 1??". Replaying it made me realize that the things I found lacking in the sequel kinda had been there since the start, only with multiplayer it is a lot easier to be outplayed completely and therefore not have a good time.

I got an ultra wide monitor two days ago and am now discovering how support is handled in different games while trying not to become one of the annoying ultra wide elitist complainers I talked crap about. RDR2 has ultra wide built in and the cutscenes are in a 21:9 ratio, but the idiot designers kept the black bars at the top and bottom as if played on a widescreen TV. Black bars used to differentiate between gameplay and cutscenes has been a staple of video games forever, but I really don't think it's necessary in most cases.

https://steamcommunity.com/app/1174180/discussions/0/1741140686417123275/

"I'd kinda like to remove the side borders with cinematic mode, but with cutscenes I get why they're there. Like with a lot of scripted stuff, there's probably things you're not supposed to see past the camera. Haven't used the FOV mod, so not sure if this is definitely the case or not."

Things you're not supposed to see? No, fool, the cutscenes are already in ultra wide. The person after him recommends a mod that removes the pillar boxes and letterboxes, but that's not a fix. That just creates more of a fish eye effect where the subjects are in the center and surrounded by vast empty space.

Don't like the game and its cutscenes anyway, but had to say it.

Opened Elden Ring for the first time since July. Tried fighting Leonine Misbegotten again. Deleting it. I want a refund, but am 12 hours in with no progress anywhere, only the "Roundtable Hold" achievement unlocked. I hate all of you who enabled FromSoftware until they got to this point. Made such good games once. Not only do they suck now, but they've dragged a large part of the industry down with them.
