After borrowing it to a friend I started a second, ground-up playthrough of E33 on Expert difficulty. I only sprinted through the first two areas, but it already feels satisfying all in its own way: now that I know how to parry and how the areas are laid out, I feel like a supergod even on single digit levels. You also look at the story with completely different eyes: hardly a single scene or location doesn't have some kind of detail, line of dialogue or similar element with a deeper or double meaning to it. The prime example of this is when you find Maelle in the manor, and she asks Gustave "Are you real?" You even start to pay attention to elements that might have been completely incidental in development, like how the crowd NPCs in Lumieré in the beginning are noticeably copypasted, sometimes having the same character model standing next to an identical replica of itself. Now that might have been just a budget thing, but it could also genuinely be a sign of Aline painting the same person over and over to populate Lumieré.

This time I'm aiming for a team of Lune, Sciel and Monoco, because Lune's mechanics are just too fun, and I basically never used the latter two in my first playthrough.

Finished the alters, cool concept. I guess you'd classify it as a survival game, but single player with an heavy focus on narrative.

Unfortunately a lot of technical issues, got one hard crash and quite a few visual glitch, getting stuck in floor and other problems. Most annoying was actually some of the alters getting stuck in place I couldn't talk to them when they wanted to chat, which is quite often.

I do feel like the concept could be pushed further. Honestly, the various alter don't make that much difference on the positive side, its more about there negative side since some will really mess up and cause problem. But about half of them have specialty that are entirely useless. There's two who specialize in getting moral up, but moral is super easy to keep up, even on hardest difficulty, that there's just no reason to use them. One specialize in farming, but there's another alter that can bypass that system altogether and give you massive moral boost in the process. One specialize in refining, but refining is super fast and not that useful anyway, same for crafting.

So a sequel where they would push the specialization more and have some randomized level would be pretty great. As is, there's some meta progression where alter will give you new lesson in life after you complete their quest, which can be used to make other quest easier (I think?). But getting those would require redoing the entire game, with all the same level.

Overall a fun little game (about 20 hours for pretty much perfect completion on hardest difficulty), a nice low fantasy sci fi, which I wish we had more of.
I'm interested in Altars as a concept and for the narrative but I really just find survival games tedious and boring. How fussy are the mechanics? Can it be played relatively casually- meaning, do I have to min/max stuff and remember a dozen whatevers if I can't play for a few games? Or can I just apply basic common sense?

That brings me back to AC Black Flag where you could pick up enemy axes and just chuck em at anyone for a guaranteed kill. The same with the muskets. Always felt real slick to me.
In terms of moves like that, combos, and power fantasy, Assassin's Creed 3 is legit amazing. You can even choke a ***** with a hunting traps, stick a trap bomb to a punk and push him at people, execute double, triple, even quadruple (IIRC) finishing combo animations, all seemlessly without breaking stride. It's honestly how crazy that combat in that game is considering how basic it is in every other AC game, including Black Flag.
My guess is that they simplified it in Black Flag because there could be so much going on screen, especially if you're raiding a ship- the crowds of combatants, the cannons, the ocean... that if they kept AC3 full combat kit in that game it would melt hardware.

Too bad that other than combat, the representation of Mohawk culture and language, and the idea of the setting and character, that game otherwise was a bag of poo :(

Y'all... Persona 5 is just too f'n long!

I'm still invested, I'm still enjoying it, I got no backlog and I'm not so busy so there is no logical reason for me to want to be done with this game. But nothing should be this freaking long!
I'm in November, which is that point where the story climaxes. I'm about to raid the final palace (which I know is not the final final palace because I played P4 and I know that there's always another one or two), but it's the one that connects the framing narrative device with the main action and focuses around the most interesting plot and character stuff around the prosecutor character.

But the game tells you have to wait 2 in-game weeks because... reasons... and it's really just a way to let you do all the side stuff, primarily ranking up relationships with other characters. Ok, fine... but there are so many characters. A few in-game days of this would be fine, as a way to pace the action, but this is really just feeling like padding.

This game is as bloated and poorly paced as all the Ubisofts and Witcher 3 and BIG OPEN WORLD WITH MAPS WITH ICONS AND CUT AND PASTE HANDHOLD blah blah blah that smartypants critics and gamers love to rag on and while it is certainly described as being long tbf, it doesn't get nearly that kind of criticism. I really can't imagine this game would have suffered without the side stories of a model arms dealer, a chess player, or a kid obsessed with video games.

This is why I never bothered with most long RPGs nor the Persona games, even though I love the art style and character design. I don't have time for that, and would rather play shorter games.

I decided to play Castlevania I (NES version). I had to stop for tonight, because I was really tired from last night. I made it to stage 3, and the difficulty real quick. I'll play some more Yotei today.

Persona games aren't just about beating a boss, they are about living a life for a year and improving upon oneself. But yeah, 5 is a big game, its an awesome game which I ended up replaying right after beating it, but its a BIIIIIG game for a single player game.

I've been playing Street Fighter Alpha 3 MAX again. Doing a Reverse Dramatic Battle with Ken. I did a sweet Level 2 Super into a Level 1 Super juggling both opponents and finishing with said Level 1 Super. God, I love these crazy and fun modes. Capcom needs to bring these back in Street Fighter 6.

There's 3 difficulty setting and on the highest I would finish every chapters with lots of extra time, I imagine you won't have trouble on lower one. Everything is very simple, there's no crafting recipe, almost everything you gather are mined using the same system. The difficulty is really just about using your time efficiently, time tick down in the world when you're doing nothing, but very slowly, it only goes quickly when your working on something. There's some monster, but very slow and worse they can do is make you lose a day.

But I can't make any promise about how fun it is casually.

The moment (a few minutes ago) when I spotted the last Harley balloon, in the distance. The last achievement. It took me eleven years to complete Arkham City Game of the Year Edition.

Playing through the japanese version of Castlevania 3 again.

Yotei - Going to Oni first, since it's on the way. I did the Soma Flute Player side quest. Getting to play with him before he expires I was not expecting. Pretty good bounty quest. I managed to beat him on the first try.

I did another mainline quest. I got into a new section that leads to Oni's path. I was not expecting Atsu's older brother, Jubei, to be alive nor a samurai lord. She wasn't expecting that either. The plot thickens.

Crow Country is neat and all. Wish the puzzles were a bit more difficult, or presented in a different way. As it is, you often have the solution, or the means to the solution, before you actually get to the puzzle. You'll often get an item some ways into the game that starts a chain reaction of solving puzzles all over the map that you already solved in your head. It's very point and clicky in that sense.

I do like the emphasis on exploration and puzzles over combat, and how you get to familiarize yourself with the amusement park and all the traps and shortcuts.

Ok sounds good, as long as I can pause it seems like something I could get into.
Especially now I adjusted my PC gaming setup so that I can play at a table with kb+m if I desire, which it seems is better for such a game.

Nah controller is the way to go, its very simple as far as survival game, there's no long toolbar with 10+ tool needed for everything.

You don't pause when you give order, but the game moving very slowly (1 hour in game is 1 minute and the game takes like 60-80 in game day to complete).

Just over halfway through with all the characters in Octopath Traveler 2. Beaten it with Throne, Ochette, Agnea, Cassti and Hikari. So far my faves are Cassti, Ochette and Throne. Hikari's was good, but not as good as the others and Agnea's was just... odd, really felt like they wanted to have her be a singer, but instead shes a dancer which is just kinda odd.

Finished Crow Country. It's a fine game, I'm just a bit disappointed that there isn't more to it. 10 hours should be fine for an indie but I dunno. Would've liked to get more out of it. Feels like the potential was there.

Mohrta came out and its awesome. Its by a dev known as Scumhead, who has done a number of gzdoom engine games and a metroidvania. Such as Shrine, Shrine 2, Vomitoreum, Angels Gear. If you know anything about Scumhead then you know hes got a really interesting visual style that his games go for, almost always dark, organic, strange and always fascinating. Mohrta is no different, except this time its in 3d and feels like its got much more production value then hes usually able to do. Each world you go to in Mohrta has drastically different visual designs going on and even different enemies. So far they tend to have similar flow, you find a few keys, open a door, fight a boss and repeat, each world seems to have 3 areas and its not uncommon for those 3 areas to be pretty different and even have different enemies.

I was a bit worried about how it would play since it felt kinda rough when I tried the demo awhile back, but it plays pretty damn smooth now. Not the hardest GZdoom engine game, especially since you carry around a healing doll with you, but once you start getting up there in worlds it can start to knock you around, but you can always upgrade your armor if its being too rough. There is a really cool hub area where you can upgrade weapons, healing doll, and mana injector. I do wish there was more dialog there since the world is so cool, but occasionally characters there will talk about different things which is nice.

Also finished Arkham Knight again a few days ago. Play is interrupted by talking and scripted events even more frequently than in previous games. The long Joker nightmare that ends in Batman shutting away this demon made me frustrated at how much has been lost with the move from cutscenes to developers telling as much of their stories through these scripted events as possible, a problem that runs through the series. Far too much time is wasted trying to figure out what the story wants you to do, which kills immersion. Having the camera either over the shoulder or in first-person view almost the entire time is visually boring compared to a good cutscene. In the part where more and more statues of Batman appear, my character got stuck in one of them and I spent several minutes blasting them away, before giving up and loading the last checkpoint, losing three minutes of progress. Cutscenes can be skipped, but these scripted sequences can't, because they masquerade as gameplay. Rocksteady overdid it with the illusions and nightmares in their three games. They stopped being novel. It was a mistake to bring Scarecrow back.

Ah, I see.
My other minor concern with such a game is text size. Controller-PC gaming for me means couch + TV (my PC is basically a living room console the way I have it set up). So for example I would never attempt something like Citizen Sleeper or Disco Elysium like that.
But that's fine, fortunately I finally just figured out how to adapt my space and setup to allow for all situations so I'll figure it out.

I'm thinking after P5 Royale (I'm at the part of the game where I'm done but I'm not done, if y'all know what I mean) I'll bite on Sword of the Sea for something short and sweet, then Alters for something medium sized.
