I get it though, I have also platinumed games i didn't like out of spite. Like Veilguard, part of me wants to platinum those games so that people can't say "you only are hating it because x,y,z you didn't even play it." But I can point to my platinum and goes, "I did play it, it sucked ass."
I only platon the games I do like or I feel they are worth the effort.

Whatever, just wash your hands.
He's the host of TGA award shows, gamescom showcases, and Amazon SGF every year. The dude has been well-liked by both gamers and big figures in the industry.

However, this game might change all that.
That explains why I have no idea who he is, I don't pay attention to things like that since they are just fancy ads.

Ok then. Since that is the case they should have spent better time elsewhere.
Well, some people have tendency to try the game out first, even though they know what they are getting into

Take me for example; I played Diablo Immortal, Overwatch 2, Red dead online, Battlefield 6, Destiny 2, and bunch of other games that I knew would suck (both objectively and subjectively), but went in anyways because I wanted to get a sense of HOW BAD they are. Same with Highguard.

Although, how long I stay in those games seem to vary; certain games has me play a few hours, while some I drop immediately; BF6 I spent about 63 hours before getting tired of it, and Highguard I am not even 1 hour in and I already have my fill.

I think for me, it stems from how gaming media reviews, and reviews of the masses, sometimes manipulate how we view certain games collectively. It's why I started doing review threads for certain games, and decide for myself how good the game is after trying it out at the least, and share my thoughts on them.

Did I think Highguard was gonna be a waste of time going in? Yes. But I wanted to give a fair chance in proving me wrong, instead of jumping on the hate wagon.

Thankfully, most of the games that I reviewed seem to be amazing at most, decent at least. And I feel I have to play these crappy games from time to time to appreciate the good ones more.

Another review.

3 vs 3 with giant maps where you spend almost all of your time alone, trying to find anyone?

I've not found a free online that I like, at all yet. Seems they always have a multi-gig update required every time I go to play.

Very amusing :)

I think Geoff just made a bad call on this to be honest. If they'd just shadow dropped the game I think nobody would be so negative about it. They just wouldn't have cared at all.
Why does any of this matter? I mean no one cared enough about this to make a thread about it here before it released, now that it has and its getting negative reviews suddenly we have a bunch of posts about how bad it is. Why does this particular game warrant this?

Several reasons that I can think of:
  1. It had that one major reveal near the end of TGA 2025 in December; Almost a month later, it gets released along with the launch trailer + developer diary
    1. Geoff K didn't help by trying to make the it look like the next big AAA competitive pvp game
  2. The reveal trailer itself was super confusing on what the game is about, and only at launch did players get to experience the gameplay
  3. Because there was no chance to get public feedback, they had no way of knowing what people liked and disliked
  4. Horrid performance and glitch issues that are now just getting addressed
  5. The aftermath of concord disaster is still there, and people are tired of another live-service hero-shooter
I genuinely think the game has potential, and the mass wave of hatred recently has been exaggerated.

But the devs also kinda shot themselves on the foot here. They could've turned down Geoff's offer on the TGA reveal and shadow drop it as playtest or beta phase, and maybe try not to make it sound like the next big game.

Because this is a game published and developed by an independent studio, I don't think it will be shut down anytime soon; But it's also gonna take a while for the game to pick up a sizable playerbase.

I think the alternative would have been a tiny blip that almost no one would have noticed.

Like wildgate came out a few months ago, barely anyone noticed (similarly it had a big name from the industry attached to it) and now its had barely enough people online at any one point to get a match going. Or the Ubisoft hero shooter that I don't even remember the name of, that lasted like 3 months or something. This is a genre that is so hyper saturated that almost nothing can get itself noticed. So the internet bullying might seem bad, but its probably the best case scenario fro them.

I agree, maybe if enough public voice of disappointment and dissatisfaction will finally make these publishers realize that we dont want more of these fucking things.

There are enough genres where you play through a game once. And maybe replay eventually.

Last year GOTY nominees had 5 of those, the year before 4, the year even before that 5.

Players open to those genres will buy new ones every single year.

For example take isometric RPGs. BG3 is now going into the third year after release. And a lot of the same people bought Rogue Trader anway and will likely buy the new Divinity.

But GaaS multiplayer titles have issues. They need a huge player count constantly or the multiplayer suffers and to keep the constant events and updates running. Players know that any such game that doesn't become a huge success might just soon die and is not worth investing into. This hurts in game sales and makes the failure even more certain. And players also slow to give up the ones that are successful and where they have already all those skins and the experience to be successful. You won't get Fortnite players to switch to Fortnite-but-from-a-different company. You won't get them to play both at once either because no one has the time for that. And you also won't get those players who are not interested in Fortnite to play your Fortnite clone.

But getting the BG3 player to play BG3-but-from-a-different-company ? That is basically guaranteed, even if your game is only "fine".
