steamDB on the player count:

As of this post, it peaked at 97,249, then has dropped to 40,152.

Wouldn't it have made sense for the player count to go up, as more people get off from work/school? Or at least, the player count dropping at a slower rate?

For comparison, ARC raiders at launch had 264,673 at launch, and dropped to 254,486 by midnight that day
7,423 active players now. Holy shit....

Weekend is when we usually see surge of players. If this number doesn't go up in the coming days, I am gonna classify this game as "on the life support" category

There are enough genres where you play through a game once. And maybe replay eventually.

Last year GOTY nominees had 5 of those, the year before 4, the year even before that 5.

Players open to those genres will buy new ones every single year.

For example take isometric RPGs. BG3 is now going into the third year after release. And a lot of the same people bought Rogue Trader anway and will likely buy the new Divinity.

But GaaS multiplayer titles have issues. They need a huge player count constantly or the multiplayer suffers and to keep the constant events and updates running. Players know that any such game that doesn't become a huge success might just soon die and is not worth investing into. This hurts in game sales and makes the failure even more certain. And players also slow to give up the ones that are successful and where they have already all those skins and the experience to be successful. You won't get Fortnite players to switch to Fortnite-but-from-a-different company. You won't get them to play both at once either because no one has the time for that. And you also won't get those players who are not interested in Fortnite to play your Fortnite clone.

But getting the BG3 player to play BG3-but-from-a-different-company ? That is basically guaranteed, even if your game is only "fine".
You are correct.

It basically boils down to the same problem that every MMO that tried to kill WoW had. People get really invested into their characters or in the cases of these games, they don't want to abandon that progress for a new game that isn't just supremely better in every way. Even then it's hard.

So accounts with Apex Progression, League of Legends heroes and skins, are the type of things that people aren't just going to bail on. All that stuff is money and a lot of time. Plus it's familiar and people like familiar things too.

Contrast this, like you said, to single player games. People are far less invested, you play through it and enjoy it for a very limited time. Once the game is over, you willingly move onto the next game. Even with NG+ modes people rarely immediately jump back into a NG+ playthrough. It's an entirely different level of investment.

It's a live service game. I think that's all the reason CG needs to root for its failure.

Oh holy crap, why are you so bought into this game failing? Did it run over your dog or something?
I like watching these games fail because I hope these companies stop trying to chase the same stupid crap and instead try making good interesting new ideas.

Companies chasing trends has been a thing since...forever, in the gaming industry. Just look at how many digitized actor fighting games came out in the wake of Mortal Kombat's success. Possibly with fatalities.

So you are mad at them for making the kind of game they wanted to make. Instead of being mad at cod which comes out every year and by all accounts this year was a pretty bad one and didn't even sell like usual. Why not make a thread laughing about that instead of a game without a publisher?

Look how many fps games came out after Wolfenstein and Doom. We got games like Halflife from "chasing trends". Just because its a trend, doesn't mean it can't add anything.

There is a difference between a staple franchise in the industry (despite it being dumb at this point). And another studio trying to make another of the same fucking live service hero shooting shitfest.

Highguard isn't some indie studio that doesnt know what they're doing. They made Titanfall and Apex.

And frankly Highguard would have been fine if it hadn't launched in a crazy saturated market where people already have their chosen game.

Why aren't people making MOBA's every six months? There are only a couple of those and at least you could have a chance.

Maybe they should have just launched a beta or something? Let feedback roll and fix the game instead of trying to milk lootboxes and skins. Then it would come across as a more genuine attempt at making something good than this.

That doesn't always work like you think it does. This isn't me coming to the defense of High Guard. All that's going to happen is some other company will try it to whatever degree of sucess or lack their of it. I wouldn't wish failure on most game devs or studios, and this particular group is no exception. They're at least trying to do something. Maybe it will change, or maybe it won't. I do wish these people the best of luck, and to try, then not try at all. Especially when a game does great or sell well, but the devs get shut down for the dumbest of reasons on the exec end we've seen time and time again.

Nick was right: as much people biatch moan about the game on social media/ YT, many of engagement bait fuck heads wanted the game to either fail, or people double downing on proving them wrong, and so on. Yet most of these morons aren't even talking about the game, and focusing so much on others reactions. With most of them not even playing the game, or barely touched and rushed to throw the latest grift take out there. It's fucking stupid, and I am glad to not be part of any of it. The game is average and derivative, but the game didn't make these people be this nasty. The "content creators" and grifters already did that to themselves.

No, this campaign against it feels like some culture warrior bullshit. Some right wing dipshit saw a black character, decided the game was woke and dedicated themselves to tearing it down.

I miss the Geoff from the Gametrailers days, when he was basically the same but not so full of himself.

Bro what? I haven't seen any complaints about wokeism or ugly characters. The game is just stupid. You're telling me you dont find flops funny?

Would you be celebrating if the game was anti-woke the same way Critical is? I find your logic odd and sort of vendetta-ish due to some beef with him or something. I dont get it.

The new dog whistle is "modern game design" or sensibilities or something like that. You don't see the "woke" accusation as much anymore. Its just culture warrior bullshit about how everything new is bad and everything good is old.

Not sure what this means.

From what I've seen, 99.9% of the complaints before launch were it being a generic live service shooting game that was hyped up by Geoff Keighley for no reason. And then after launch, most of the complaints were about the maps being way too big for a 3 vs 3 shooter, and being in general generic at best in any one category. I've barely heard anyone address the characters, and when they do, the reaction is basically "We have Apex at home".
