Whatever, just wash your hands.
As the title says, Steam Machine is up for order, or joining a list that will be randomized for order invites being sent out. Also, it costs too much at $1049 for the 512 gig model. If they managed to get it for $700, then I would dive on it, even $800, but over 1k... Yeah, just not enough power for that. Makes me more tempted to grab a switch 2 so I can play Starfox and just keep streaming steam to my living room tv.

A ready built PC to hook up to my television sounded like a nice product to have, but it's over double what I would be willing to give for it.

I hope that people who do get one enjoy theirs 👍

They probably got massively screwed up by the price of everything exploding, seems they were aiming for a low budget PC gaming, but couldn't source component for a decent price.

Even then, its nothing that impressive, so same as the first time they tried this idea.

They certainly wanted to price it lower. The Steam Deck was very aggressively priced. We just happen to live in the stupidest timeline.

If the price of RAM and memory hadn't tripled (and I'm told to expect it to quintuple so, maybe I better get a laptop ASAP) This would likely have gone for $500ish. I would have jumped on it. Gaming is going to be very weird for the next 3 years. I'm all set myself. I have plenty, even though, as a loon, I'd always love to have more. But for young'uns just getting into gaming? I think the powers that be are going to get their cloud streaming/own nothing customers.

I think six or seven hundred was more likely for their estimated price, but either way, it would have been much more tempting before the rampocolypse. Storage also suddenly getting much more expensive isn't helping.

It costs about as much as a pre-built PC, but with a full tier less in terms of performance. Is it crazy though that I am kinda of surprised that they managed to keep the cheapest offering at 1049 USD?

This has been on my mind for a while now. I will continue to ***** and moan about having to pay for PS+, 70 dollar games, and this ridiculous PC parts market. But at the end of the day, I could still comfortably purchase these things. But what about some 16 year old? 14, 12, even 10? Gaming as a whole seems to have forgotten about the kids. And even if kids were able to afford to buy shit, what would they even want to buy? The best games out there are often targeted towards more mature audiences. My younger siblings game more than I do at this point, but they stick to free to plays like Genshin or Roblox. Man i really hope kids in the future will still care about games.

I really do wonder what kids will be doing for games. My nephew mainly plays Roblox and crazy gorilla or something game on vr. As far as I know, he might have moved onto something else. It was just sad getting him a $50 card for his vr and seeing him instantly spend it on dlc stuff for the gorilla game.

Games haven't really gotten more expensive over time, most console go roughly for the same price today as they used too (adjusting for inflation) and games are a bit cheaper, there's subscription for some online play, but that used to flat out not exist. And the F2P market has plenty of good things (Genshin can be a perfectly fine game even with 0 purchase, there were plenty of worse game on most console when I was that age). As far as PC, its far simpler to get a get/make a decent PC nowaday (notwistanding the PC part sourcing issue, but not much dev/valve can do about that).

The Roblox stuff is pretty sad, but I don't really see that as a game, its more of a social hangout things. The kind of kid who gravitate toward it would never have gone for gaming back in the day.

I think most new graphics cards have HDMI 2.1, and these jokers put in 2.0. You can try to use its DisplayPort 1.4 with DSC, but a big selling point of this box was supposed to be connectivity with TVs, which don't have DisplayPort. No 4K at 120 Hz even for games that are not demanding at all.

Linux only got hdmi 2.1working recently, like last month, after the hardware specs were already set.

They got screwed by the memory/storage apocalypse.

It could have been a great deal at $700, but at $1100 it's a completely unreasonable value proposition. If it had come out a year earlier it would have flown off shelves.

Timing is everything.

People who buy this need their head checked.

Edit: And yes it's ironic coming from me.

Adjusted for inflation, the Atari 2600 on launch was crazy expensive. But I've always said buying tech is not a hurry. Expect prices to go down as the tech improves. Around 2005ish, I bought a brand new platinum gamecube with Super Smash Bros, controller, $100. That 20 years later, I'm paying about 14 times that much for a new gabecube? This does seem insane and industry wrecking. Was it done on purpose (If I can game on it, and maybe use Office Libre or Open Office, and more open source apps, what is the purpose of Windows?)

And now all hope I had for the Steam Frame is gone. Thanks, AI, for ruining yet another thing I might have liked.
It's not gone for me, but it is in critical condition and the priest has been called. My Q3 is awesome, but the Frame offers so much to hope for. That wireless dongle would help in so many ways. And the reason I don't have more VR games is due to storage. That problem, especially with the SD cards, could have been a game changer is. As it is? I got a 512 before things got nuts for about $30. More like $110 on Amazon now. Even that simple solution has been made, well, not a deal.

Look at the Steam Deck. I got mine around launch, LCD, 64 gig, for $400. Handheld youtubers were all saying for advice? Just get a deck. And they were flat out sold out.

Gaming adjusting for inflation is sadly only true for the US and I guess Europe. The 16% increase from 60 to 70 for games became 40% to 60% increase back home thanks to essentially no regional pricing. The PS5 at launch was more than twice what my parents paid for a PS4 in 2015.
The Roblox stuff is pretty sad, but I don't really see that as a game, its more of a social hangout things. The kind of kid who gravitate toward it would never have gone for gaming back in the day.
I don't see how you came to that conclusion. Roblox is weird but it is very much a game, and recreations of "real" games are quite popular on it.
